Hi Brian - I drink more in the summer (probably the 8-10 glasses) than I do in the winter (around 4-5). I have always found that I need to drink a glass before and after I exercise which helps my muscles not to be sore.
I occasionally get a massage (boy do I need one right now) and am always told to drink, drink, drink, the rest of the day. At times when I do not drink enough, my muscles are really sore the next day, whereas if I drink enough, I am not sore. The water removes toxins that the massage breaks up (or something like this I am told). Plus, another way I can tell when I do not get enough water is my urine is darker. When I am getting enough, it is much lighter. My 8-year-old granddaughter and I had this conversation a while back, and now I see her drinking more water. ![]()

Dr. Oz (the guy on Oprah), says you know you are drinking enough water if you can read through your urine.
So, before you pee, drop a piece of paper with the words "CAN I SEE THIS?" INTO THE WATER". Then do your manly thing into the toilet bowl. Watch and if you see the words "CAN I SEE THIS", YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY KNOW YOU HAVE NOT DIED OF DEYHDRATION". You will also have played Magic 8 Ball in the toilet bowl. I know, all of you Aussies out there have no idea what Magic 8 ball is, right? Mel

Drinking water is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your health, water makes up 60 percent of our bodies. It breaks down vitamins, glucose and other nutrients, while transporting them and helping our body absorb them.
Water is our most essential nutrient,.people can survive days, weeks or months without food, but only about four days without water, the body uses water for digestion, absorption, circulation, transporting nutrients, building tissues, carrying away waste and maintaining body temperature,.our bodies make water as a by-product in the breakdown of fats, sugars and proteins to energy, also water flushes toxins out of our vital organs. People should be carefull with caffeinated drinks, for every cup of caffeine, you should add a glass of water to counteract caffeine 's dehydrating effect. Dehydration can have serious, long-term effects., like blood pressure, circulation and kidney functions can all be badly affected by not drinking enough water. Drinking water is also important for loosing weight, i have read that water will increase your metabilism by about 3 percent, i know its not much, but every little bit counts. |

Good point about water increasing our basal metabolism. Water is truly the medium of our life processes as virtually all important metabolic conversions need it. And that 3% increase ain't something to sneeze at - over the course of a year, that equals roughly 4-5 pounds.
Now for my plug: As long as everyone is going to drink enough water from now on, you might as well make sure it is good quality. In some places, that could mean tap water. But for most of us, we will need some form of purification. No need to spend a lot of money on the bottled stuff. There are now many low-cost and long-lasting systems. I am convinced that there are few such investments that pay the same health dividends, dollar for dollar. Heavy metal toxicity is one cause of neuropathy - that alone should hit home for all of us. The list goes on and on. I urge everyone to consider this valuable investment in their own health. rafi |
