Do you think peripheral neuropathy is similiar to polyneuropathy? I was just diagnosed with this today. I have autonomic dysfunction (digestion) with numbness in hands and feet. Also, nerve damage in abdomenal area. Right now it is painful to eat anything. Shelley I put a more detailed biography in the new members section.

To answer your question.. polyneuropathy is a type of peripheral neuropathy.
To break down the word literally it means "many nerve disease". (hurray for medical terminology) ![]() There are cases where people only have a mononeuropathy such as carpal tunnel. (mono being the prefix for one) Do you know what type of nerve damage you specifically have? I know you have many nerves affected.. but did your EMG show damage to the myelin, axon.. both? Distal vs. proximal? |

Hi & welcome to the forum, Peripheral nerves are all nerves outside the brain and spinal.

:The neurologist just told me I have polyneuropathy, including some autonomic dysfunction. I had to go back on a med and last night (cymbalta) I almost chewed my lip off while sleeping. (grinding- I have a mouthguard) I need more specifics and may go to Mass General Hospital for a more thorough evaluation. I did an intro in the members of NeuroTalk new members section as to why I may have this. I woul have done it here- but was confused about the process. I am a 43 yr. old Mom of two. (12,13 yr.) I have been in so much pain - I don't think I have been a great one lately. Last night my digestive system was pretty bad. I won't go into specifics. (too disgusting) My family is all revved up about Christmas and I feel like a humbug. I'll come out of it though. I know I am blessed to have a wonderful family. Shelley

Welcome to our PN forum.
Do you know what antibiotics you were given when you were treated for the intestinal infection? Do you know what infection you had? Salmonella, or Campylobacter? Some antibiotics cause PN.

Welcome Sheley. I have idiopathic sensory polyneuropathy as well. No one has really elaborated on what makes up the poly on me so I may ask my neuro at my next appt...this is a great place for info as there is a lot of knowledge here.
