MJ & weight gain
A lot of times, marijuana causes an increase in appetite. You'll hear people who use it talk about "having the munchies".
That's my uneducated take on that :p |

I think its because you never see a middle aged pothead whose been smoking for , say 20 years. They probably would have a 'bulge'. The reality show junkies and potheads usually don't have a healthy attitude towards diet, anyway. They don't eat right and sometimes just don't eat- except for the munchies.:( I remember an episode in college (I weighed 185 lbs then) when I smoked some MJ & ate an entire 12" pecan pie, with a quart of Budweiser to wash it down, in less than 30 minutes and wanted something else for 'dessert'. MJ always gave me a craving for sweets, but I could just as easily have eaten a couple of 14" pizzas, or emptied an entire refrigerator. |
Then I am very happy I do not smoke pot. I have spent the last 4 years eating soundly, losing weight and taking care of myself. The last thing I need to do is gain back the weight and have my sugar go up. Not going to happen.
Thankfully, I don't need mj, but it's good to have the information. And when I said I see potheads on tv, I meant those intervention shows. These drug addicts (and I know they do more than smoke pot), but they all weight 90 lbs, have no teeth and look like they are near death's door. Very sad |

Now answer me this one. You said that taking medical mj might cause a bit of weight gain. why?? *** Comes from a decades-old myth that smoking MJ gives you the munchies (and it does for some, I guess -- maybe I'll share a story about an experience at a medical marijuana patient support group potluck). Every time I see a pothead on tv, they are always skinny and unhealthy looking. *** 'cause that's the easy stereo-type. So how could medical mj (or any mj) cause weight gain? *** Only if you use the MM as an excuse to eat bad, processed foods. ***OK -- I'm in a good mood right now and have a few minutes, so I'll tell my story. *** I was first introduced to MM by a friend/former client. I know about the program and knew that she had become a patient and then a grower. Once I go through the program and become certified, she encourages me to attend a MM patient social event -- a pot luck! I thought, that sounds OK, so let's go. *** I really had no idea what to expect. We arrived at the location. I presented my papers to the door man (my card had not arrived yet, but I had the official papers that said I'd submitted my application) and we walked in. The event was held on the basement floor of a business that made glass-ware for smokers (some really pretty stuff -- expensive!). We walked down the stairs into a room full of.... **** MY PARENTS' FRIENDS! No, really, the average age was probably late 50s. Sure, some young "patients" (who seemed to have the fanciest and most expensive smoking devices), but mainly older people. Seated at long tables with their smoking apparatus in front of them. *** I was pretty excited because I was going to meet people who grew different types, plus sample some different strains (MM growers are all generally geeks -- they love to have you sample their material and pronounce it "killer" or "smooth" or something like that. *** Someone had even brought a liquid chocolate fountain for dipping strawberries where the chocolate had MM infused in it. *** It quickly became apparent to me that there was going to be some serious smokin' going on. *** Someone had put out chips and salsa. It was there I realized potheads and potlucks are probably not a good combination as I watched a guy pick up a chip, dip into the salsa, chomp, dip a second time, chomp, dip a third time (!) and start all over again. *** So yes -- some people do smoke their brains out and lose all sense of proper decorum at potlucks.. But I wouldn't say even he was very fat... Cowboy |

These drug addicts (and I know they do more than smoke pot), but they all weight 90 lbs, have no teeth and look like they are near death's door. *** While those addicts you describe are almost certainly crack heads or meth addicts, it is certainly true that they probably also smoke pot. Meth does have those kinds of bad physical effects on people. I've known a few serious drug addicts and they look just plain sick. And they are! *** Back in the 60s, the claim was pot was a "gateway" drug. Gateway in the sense that if you have to find a drug dealer to buy pot, you will probably get opportunities to try other drugs. *** I think legalizing pot (yes, for recreational users as well) would be a very smart move for America -- all of those narco-gangs growing pot in our national forests would just vanish. Law enforcement would have more resources for serious crime and if it was taxed and sold through state outlets like alcohol is done in many states, well... ***But I am off topic. Sorry. Cowboy |

Wow, boy did I learn stuff today THAT I NEVER KNEW IN ALL MY LIFE. People get together for coffee and cake sessions and they bring bongs (or whatever they are called), and they do MM. NEVER EVER KNEW THIS IN ALL MY LIFE. And this is funny, because tonight I am having my friendly neighbors over for coffee and cake (my lovely muffins), and other indulgences. I can't wait to see the look on their faces when I tell them "Do you know that people get together and do this and smoke pot?" They will think I am off my mind. So is it correct to ascertain that all of the people in the room have some kind of pain condition for which nothing else worked and pot does the trick. And you have papers to prove that you should get a card?? Really? THIS BEATS WOODSTOCK!! lol Melody P.S. thanks for the information, I knew NOTHING about these things. |
Just to add to this discussion a bit, I have issues with many foods. I know pain meds mess with our digestion too, yet outside of that, many foods cause constipation too. I found quite by accident, dairy was causing me to have insomnia...now if I get some dairy, I get constipation too. Recently, I added pecans to my list of foods, and they caused constipation for me. My food list is very limited, so when something new is added, it is very easy for me to figure out the culprit.
I love the little individual prunes, but can't have them anymore while on a yeast overgrowth diet.:( I read yesterday too, when constipated, drink lots of water. Actually, it says to drink 2 quarts of water daily for your health..I probably drink 1 quart a day. |

From my point of view, you've led a pretty sheltered life, when it comes to 'field' experience with recreational drugs.:confused: BTW, your muffins would be a perfect way to infuse MJ (liberally sprinkle it in like basil or parsley) at one of those gatherings.:p:winky: My girlfriend (in the 60's) had a 'killer' recipe for double chocolate fudge pot brownies.:D So delicious you could keep on munching them all night with milk, coffee, or tea- except that just one was enough to get you pretty darn high for an entire evening. |
I sometimes wish I had this problem (no not really) because even with constipating meds, I have chronic "D". It is such a drain on my energy. I try to keep things healthy with my daily consumption of yogurt and buttermilk. Both have pro-biotics and are easy to digest.
On the few occasions I have been constipated, prune Juice or apricot nectar work well for me. I used to find that MJ worked great for nausea. I have been through some touch times with chronic nausea. Problem was it would put me into a dysautonomic tailspin that felt sort of like an anxiety attack. Not good. Hope you are all enjoying your Spring. We have been having a beautiful one in the mid-Atlantic. Mere |

So is it correct to ascertain that all of the people in the room have some kind of pain condition for which nothing else worked and pot does the trick. *** Not just some kind of pain condition -- they must have a qualifying condition (the most visible is cancer, but the list of qualifiers is fairly broad and pain is just one) And you have papers to prove that you should get a card?? Really? *** "Had" papers to show my application for a card was pending; now I have a card -- it's laminated like a DL but without a picture. THIS BEATS WOODSTOCK!! *** Yeah, in a way (a very high percentage of Viet Nam vets -- you know, guys that have been affected in some way -- PTSD) until you talk to a person who doesn't show up at the next social because she died. Cowboy. PS -- One of the better strains for me is called "God" and came from the garden of that woman. When she died my friend/grower had to go in and clear out all of her garden. |
