O.k., this is weird, but I swear I "smell" different! I don't like the way I smell any more! I know my taste buds have changed. I can't drink diet soda any more. Some things just taste awful that I used to like. And now by the late afternoon, I can't stand the smell of myself! I shower every morning, but
![]() Oh, and this is not a "smell" issue, but at night when I take off my socks, it feels like I'm taking a band aid off an open wound. OOOOUUUUUCCCHHH! I dread taking my socks off! ![]() |

Meds and supplements make you smell different to a dog, and sometimes to people. For example, take any garlic and it will effect body odor. Fish oil in greater amounts than is utilized by your body also effects body odor. Some meds cause dry skin, sweating, promote fungus, promote bacterial growth, etc.
Something besides meds and supplements may be happening with your feet, like a fungus infection. Your doctor should check it out, and the other things you mention also. Something may also be causing your perceived BO, such as early diabetes. Again, your doctor should check it out.

When my husband was on the Fentanyl patch (for almost 18 months), he wound up with a side effect called Taste Perversion. Even though he has been off the patch for about 3 and half years (closer to 4 I think), he has to make every single thing he eats much sweeter.
I never under stood why he had to put 6 sweet n lows in his coffee (now he uses Splenda and he's down to 3 packets. But I have to put honey and a little splenda on his sweet potatoes. And he eats his spaghetti with no salt tomato sauce (of couse with some splenda on it. He won't eat anything that is not sweetened to his satisfaction because he can't taste things. I once asked this question on the boards, got the reply about Taste Perversion, ran it by his pharmacist and one of his doctors and of course the doctors never know more than anybody on these boards, believe me (except for Dr. Fred, who we both adore). But thankfully, it never affected Body Odor. And I'm glad I came across this thread. My son is on topamax. It's one of the meds he is on besides zoloft, trazadone, and god knows what other meds he takes. He has a mood disorder, and aspergers disorder and the last time I asked him, I could swear he was on Topamax. I remember saying Why on earth are you on Topamax and he said "mom, it's effective for many things and it's given as a med for certain conditions". I just sent him a portion of this thread. That's all he needs. To "smell bad" besides his other problems. I bet he'll send me an e-mail saying "I could care less how I smell to others". That's been his attitude for the past 5 years. But you wrote a valuable post and I thank you. regards, Melody P.S. If it is indeed the topamax, maybe they can switch you to something that will have you smelling "nicer". lol

in that fine print things about taste and smell sensitivities.. usually in the fine print about either 'other or rare s/e's'.
Can I ask what brand of fish oil/omega oil you use? I've found using Wal-Mart brand vs. some specialty vitamin store brands does make a difference in terms of 'fishy smell' perceptions. ON THE OTHER HAND...I've experienced a strange bit of improvement...after onset and for over 3-1/2 years the feet had stopped sweating. I must be improving as they are now sweating, tho intermittently. Sweating BIG TIME! With that comes smell, more than just sweat, I'm thinking as those glands have probably accumulated goodness knows WHAT in the interim. Just as long as it doesn't smell rotten [as in an abcess that breaks or cut that's gone infected], I would sort of half-heartedly rejoice? I DO know that when I've OD'ed on Vit C, I can't tolerate anything acetic..at all! Check the fine print on the meds and read it all, then web up various Vit/supplements w/Overdose and see what spits out. Warn you tho, your brain will probably spin. I keep doing it over and over, checking and rechecking, well, it can turn your brain to peanut-butter or worse. I just hope this helps you a little in-between other stress factors! - j |
