About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Recently I had an EMG and Nerve Conduction Study that diagnosed me with chronic sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy. Most of the pain, tingling, burning, stinging, zapping sensations began in my feet. Now I am noticing little burning, pinprick sensations in my lower legs and this morning my hands are tingling and numb feeling.
I am taking 50 mg of Zoloft and my PCP put me on 50 mg. of Lyrica while I wait for an appointment with a neurologist (she is supposed to be the best in my area, but it will take 6-8 weeks for her to review my records and make an appointment). I'm not diabetic, my B12 level is normal, my sed rate level is borderline. Are there other test I should have done while waiting on the neuro appointment? Should I try any supplement(s) now? Thanks for any thoughts! |

Welcome to NeuroTalk:
I think you should get your actual number for the B12 test and report it here. US testing ranges include a very low number as "normal", so it would not be flagged. Doctors typically don't know this, and many people walk around "normal" who can be helped! I'd also get a Vitamin D test. Were you tested for the cryoglobulins and MGUS? If not, I'd get that done too. http://www.questdiagnostics.com/hcp/...eralNeurop.htm This is the testing list Dr. Latov uses to diagnose PN. What testing did you have for diabetes? Did you have a fasting INSULIN? a long GTT test? Some impaired glucose tolerance sneaks thru as "normal" with somewhat normal fasting testing. But the long GTT will show dips at 2hrs+ which indicate insulin resistance. Many PNs start at this stage, before full blown diabetes is visible. Do you know your A1C? Off topic...I see you like hummingbirds? We have a thread to cams to them on our Pets forum: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread135878.html There is typically some drama at Phoebe's nest. This past week was an example.

This is about as comprehensive a list of actually serological tests for possible causes of neuropathy as is out there (it was designed to guide the major laboratory test company Quest). Some of the tests listed, particularly those for antibodies to peripheral nerve, wouldlikely only be orderd by a specialty center for neuropathy, but many of the others would be orderable by any physician (and you might want to bring a copy of this with you to such appointments). Also, there are the Liza Jane spreadsheets: www.lizajane.org --put together by a patient as a very comprehensive list of tests for neurological symptoms, and as a good way to track test results over time (and many of us here have used them). |
