Heat really is to be avoided IMO. This stimulates the heat receptor nerves, which are more affected by the PN process-- whatever it is for that person.
My Chiro told me once, never to apply heat for more than 10 minutes from a heating pad. And ICE seems to work for those with "inflammatory" issues. I use a reusable ice pack very frequently. This ice treatment is now recommended for those with arthritis too.

Yes I also cannot take a bath as the PN pain is excruciating, although I could stand in a shower for any length of time and not get the same effect.

it's the same for me in the shower. does this mean that people recommending baths with epsom salts are doing so in tepid water, or that different types of neuropathy are not as affected by heat
|

I always recommend tepid water for the epsom salt baths.
Sensory neuropathies affect the heat sensing receptors first. We have two different systems for temperature. Heat and cold. Stimulating the cold receptor has priority so heat ones get blocked by cooler stimuli.
