Hello,
My chemist sold me Blackmores pain releif Cream for my back pain. It contains Comfrey. It says Symphytum officinale (Comfrey) extract equiv to fresh root 175mg/g. I also read that it can be very toxic to liver. I assume that it is worse when ingested, than applied topically to lower back. I am worried about using it because we don't get enough information on some of these ointments that chemists peddle over here. I need a more natural alternative to voltaren pills for when my back plays up. Does anyone know if this is safe to use? Thank you!! ![]() |

Here is an article that discusses this.
There are significant warnings for comfrey: http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetCo...hunkiid=104671 It can be absorbed thru the skin... depending on what the cream base contains. Some creams are very good at transporting things to the blood stream.

I have used creams with comfrey for injuries. I use it for acute problems so it's short term use. It's good for broken bones, sprains and strains, and sore joints. Do not use on broken skin though.
IMO, it is safe if not over done. And it would take a lot to over do it externally. Another option to look into is castor oil packs. I have clients who use it for sciatica, swollen joints, back muscle spasms and other various complaints. I've been using castor oil packs for years and consider it part of my "first aid" kit at home. |

I decided not to use the Blackmores cream with comfrey. I used my Tigerbalm instead. I decided to take a peak at the ingredients and one of them was Comfrey at 11 percent!
Here I thought I was being careful. I have used Tiger balm for years safely. U cant win sometimes me thinks. |
