I need a list of "GOOD" antibiotics in case I get another UTI. The med. that one doc said was safe was on a list of bad ones for neuropathy.
I REALLY DO WELL with Duricef!! No problems and it sure seems like a good one as far as very few side effects. But it doesn't always help, depending on the bacteria of course. I sure wish it helped every time. Cipro made me hurt all over and I think it is not good for neuropathy. I need a list of good ones to choose from depending on my bacteria. I hate to take them, but it sure seems like I might be getting a UTI. I take DMannose and Cranberry pills three times a day...I try to hard doing all I am supposed to do. |

Looks like I am getting a UTI, feeling more like it now. It is too bad it didn't happen in the daytime. Hope I feel ok until morning when I can see the doctor.
I hope Mrs. D can peek in and I can have more information to take to the doctors. They will just give Cipro, but I hope to try Duricef first while the test comes back. I just called a pharmacist and she gave me three that are safer. Duricef ( I do fine with that) Macrobid and Keflex. Guess I can take that list with me if I see the doctor. Hope I won' need to. Keflex used to be first line, but it is no longer recommended in people with recurrent infections because resistance may be present.
Macrobid is a no no for PN. Short term use usually is safe, but if you have PN already? It might be problematic. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17666646 http://www.neurologyindia.com/articl...harafadinzadeh Duricef and Keflex are related. Duricef is a newer analog of the older Keflex. The first line for urinary tract issues is Septra/Bactrim. If you can tolerate sulfonamides and are not allergic you can try this. There is an older drug called methenamine (Urex) but some doctors are not familiar with it.

When I have a UTI, I drink a lot of liquid to flush. In my experience of UTI, the best to drink is fresh buko (young coconut) juice. Sadly, I only see buko juice in limited grocery stores. I am glad to know that Bactrim is a "safe" antibiotic for PNers. |

This site says it "may" cause PN: Bactrim/Septra
http://doublecheckmd.com/EffectsDeta...d=717&eid=2089 But I do not find papers on this at PubMed. It may be that the allergic reactions and toxicity effects affect the nerves somewhat because of the skin reactions. Some people are just very allergic to sulfonamide drugs.

Thanks. I did see my doctor. Interesting how well the Dmannose worked. He did not fine a bad infection. I would love to continue the larger doses of D mannose and no Duricef, but I am on the Duricef to make sure it goes away.
Dmannose works so well! Duricef is fine for me but they will call to see if the Duricef is the right thing for the bacteria when the tests comes back. Thanks for the info. I cannot take sulfa drugs. Such a shame these meds are so toxic. I really hope the Duricef is all I need. ![]() |
