Just wondering how others suffering from PN cope during the colder months of winter. I find that the cold temperatures and snow have an adverse effect on my symptoms of SFN. If I am indoors not too bad, but outside is another story. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I protect my head...wear a hat.
I protect my hands...always have gloves. I also wear leg warmers in the house...as our home is drafty and old. It is about time now to get them out. I don't like socks anymore, but the legwarmers warm the blood nicely so I can still be sockless.

Cuddle duds makes a complete line of really nice looking long underwear. Kohls carries all of it, there is a super soft line and a heavier, warmer line. I am very partial to the soft ones because many things irritate my skin and these are feather light, I wear them indoors. The heavier brushed ones are perfect for outside. They are flexible and fit under clothes easily. They come in fashionable colors.
There is also a really nice fleece lined robe that looks like an enormous ankle length sweatshirt from l.l.bean. I only take it off to wash it. I bundle up all winter long and we keep the heat on 72. I am always cold and it makes the pain a lot worse. Hope this helps. |

Thanks mrsD. I always wear a hat and gloves, but the leg warmers are a good idea. My skin is very sensitive to most textures and anything too tight is out of the question. I can still wear some socks, but footwear can be somewhat of a problem. Staying warm and comfortable is my ultimate goal! The colder temperatures seem to make symptoms flare, especially in my limbs.

Thanks Susanne! The Cuddle duds line sound very promising. I also need soft textures as my skin is also very sensitive and easily irritated. However, I live in Eastern Canada, we do not have a Kohls here. I suppose that I could check to see if this line is available at any of our retail clothing stores. I checked out the Cuddle duds website, but am not one to buy clothing off the internet. I do appreciate the lead though.

I meant to add that I sometimes wear fingerless gloves in the house in the winter. I find that just covering up my wrists works well enough to keep my hands warm and from hurting.
I'd rather be cooler than hot however.

When I go outside in the winter I wear Fruit of the Loom long underwear. The ones I found are softer than previous ones and comfortable. I tried Cuddle Duds but way too expensive and didn't do anything more for me than these do. I get them at WalMart.
My calves and feet are always cold to the touch regardless. They do not hurt unless you get really really cold. There is nothing that will warm my calves and feet up. They are just cold to the touch. It's just what my type of CMT has done. My hands are not affected with CMT. But if they get cold in the house, I too, wear fingerless gloves. Amazing what that will do.

My husband is convinced that even if I say I can't feel the cold it still makes the pain worse in the long run. He is always telling me to put on socks and slippers. |
