I also went into a severe depression just afterward and have been struggling with it ever since (going on 7 years now.) I'm always weak and lethargic, and sometimes sleep way more than I should. The lethargy is so bad that I haven't been able to work at times. The stomach problems have also hindered my ability to live a normal life. I don't know if any or all of my problems could have been caused by the cream, but could it be possible?

I did some research and it seems that zinc overdose can cause a copper deficiency, and one of the symptoms of copper deficiency is chronic diarrhea. So that is a definite link. Google "copper deficiency" for more information.
You should have a zinc/copper ratio done with a blood test.
One of the first signs of low copper is anemia.

Zinc metabolism:
Quote:
Zinc Metabolism

The dietary intake of zinc is around 10-15 mg/day. It is present in meat and other protein foodstuffs, but intestinal absorption is affected by other dietary constituents. Absorbed zinc enters the liver where it is incorporated into zinc metalloenzymes and exported to peripheral tissue in plasma, bound to albumin. Of the total plasma zinc concentration of 12-25 µmol/l, over 90% is associated with albumin, <10% with alpha-2 macroglobulin, and a small amount, <1%, complexed to amino acids and other low molecular weight species.

Zinc homeostasis is achieved by regulation of enterohepatic re-circulation. An amount of zinc equivalent to the total absorbed zinc is re-excreted into the gut in intestinal fluids. In normal health zinc output by the gut is equal to the total dietary intake. Urinary excretion of zinc is low (around 10 µmol/day), and does not vary markedly with dietary supply. It is increased in catabolic states, by certain drugs and/or chelating agents.

This is a good monograph:

Notice low zinc can also cause diarrhea.

Zinc is excreted in larger amounts in people who have pyroluria.

Many people have this disorder and don't know it. Today more
information is available on it. Don't expect your doctor to know this one.

I had to make a formal FOI request to GlaxoSmithKline for the ingredients

here they are exactly as I was given (this is EXACTLY as everything was spelled):

Sodium/magesium/zinc methylvinylether/maleicanhydnde copolymer salt CMC (sodium carboxymetheylcellulose)
Mineral oil
Petrolatum
Silicon Dioxide
Gantrez acid
Spray dried peppermint (contains modified starch)
Spray dried spearmint (contains modified starch)
Opatint Red 7 calcium lake
Opatint Red 30 aluminum lake
Thanks for this information. I am here for my father, who has almost total neuropathy in both feet. He used Polygrip for as long as I can remeber, until 1992, when he had some type of snaps/? or something placed into his gums and dentures. He has had tests run and told that he shows signs of zinc poisening. When he contacted Glaxo, he was told that in 1992, there was not any zinc in their product. Without some "old" polygrip, we really have no way to determine if that is true or not. If you or anyone else has any suggerstions on how to obtain some "old" polygrip, or the ingredents that it supposedly had back then, we'd love to hear them.

This information will certainly be disclosed during litigation of denture cream injury claims. You don't need to be a lawyer to know better than to believe anything they may have told your dad, then or now. Offhand I am not sure whether Poligrip contained zinc prior to 1992. If you would like additional information, please feel free to PM me.

Thought you might be interested! The evidence is growing.

Scott William Weinstein of Morgan & Morgan in Ft. Myers, Fla., told the NLJ that long-term use of denture cream leads to zinc buildup and neurological problems because it binds to copper and removes too much of it from the body. Weinstein said his firm has begun to screen more than 3,000 potential cases. Meanwhile, a dozen cases are pending in federal courts in a variety of states.
