I received this paper from Pain.com in my email last week. I thought I would post it here in case anyone with PN caused by diabetes might gain something from it.
I note that in table 1. it recognises the existence of non diabetic neuropathies and by saying that these neuropathies “may be present in diabetics, confounding the diagnostic process” indicates for the first time (to me anyway) that there is a profound difference between diabetic and non diabetic neuropathy. This would also suggest that there are differing “treatments” for each disease. Tony |

I haven't read the article, but what you quote suggests to me that the same, or similar, symptoms and signs exist between diabetic neuropathies and neuropathies of some other causes. So docs need to be careful not to assume that it is diabetic when there might be some other cause that requires different treatment.
There are completely different treatments in some cases, and in many others there is not. The key is generally to remove the cause in cases where that is possible (not possible with genetic neuropathies at this point), and support the body in its natural tendency to repair what is possible. rose
