Hi, please let me know if anyone has experienced this. I woke up last night literally freezing. I was shivering so hard it went all the way down my legs in waves. My teeth would not stop chattering. I finally had to grit my teeth and get out from under my cover and get a thick, long sleeve flannel night shirt. I nearly fell because I could barely support my own legs. I finally got back in bed and continued with the shivering. It woke my friend (heavy sleeper) who checked to see if I had a fever... nope, no fever. I was pretty much hyperventalating so I breathed into my cover. This also warmed my hands. All the shivering actually hurt my stomach muscles and started causing back spasms.
This isn't the first time it has happened. For the last 2 mornings I have gotten up and sat in my chair right next to the ac unit. I assumed I was just having one of those cold days ( with a temperature of 75 in my house). Usually I just threw a blanket over myself and warmed up in a matter of ten minutes. Last night lasted over 30 minutes. The shakes eventually started slacking off, and I was able to speak. This morning my back and stomach are both tight. Is this just one of the things I need to write down to talk to the doc about? I will say once I got warm I finally fell back to sleep so when I woke up I was drenched in sweat from wearing winter apparel. Sorry if I am bugging everyone, but I am beyond clueless about what is happening to my body. By the way... another rarity, has anyone woke up with tiny red spots over hands? It looked like burst capularies . Thanks again, Helen |

I get shivering rarely but in my case it
Is due to a GI spasm, not really cold. It is similar to cold shivers only feels " deeper". I call mine "rigors". If you Google this You will find that rigors are more serious Than shivers. I use mine as a sign to Take my emergency med for GI spasms before They become ultra serious and require hospitalization As happened to me long ago.

I have had this experience many times, most recently just a few nights ago. My teeth were chattering uncontrollably and my husband had to get blankets and rub my arms and legs for a long time before it was under control. I understand what you mean about your back and stomach feeling tight. It is very stressful physically.
I have CMT, Charcot Marie Tooth, a hereditary sensory motor neuropathy and chills and ice cold extremities are part of the disease. My feet are usually freezing cold to the touch although I cannot feel them, and the colder they are it seems the more pain I have. I have to remember to keep them as warm as I can with wool socks and furry slippers. I make extensive use of electric blankets year round. I have read your other thread and I am truly sorry that you have so much pain and disability to deal with and so little support. Neuropathy is a hard disease to diagnose and treat, often there are no treatments beyond some pain relief, and doctors are often unhelpful. Combine that with medical insurance problems and it is really overwhelming. |

I went back to your first post.... I am on vacation
And on an iPhone. I see you stated that you are on 11 rx medications? Some major potential with them may be your problem. A major pain in the body can start a cascade of low Blood pressure that results in the rigors. Also misuse of Opiates can create a mini withdrawal as the drug wears off That results in shivering. I would need to see that drug list to see if some interaction Is going on. 11 rx meds is a lot to take and that Often leads to complex situations of low blood pressure, Electrolyte disturbances, glucose abberations, serotonin Syndrome, etc. If you list your meds here i can try to find a reason for Your shivering.

Thank you for the list.
I will have to study it in depth as soon As we return from our vacation (I have A reference book i use at home) But I do see an obvious interaction Right now... 100 mg of Elavil may Interact with Cymbalta to create Serotonin Syndrome. Also cymbalta tends to Raise blood pressure and that would Interfere with the action of metaprolol. If that 100mg is not a typo.. I'd seriously Question the need for ANY Cymbalta. So please discuss this with your doctor and Taper down slowly, if a discontinuance Is decided upon. You can start this process Now with your doctor to see if you notice Any changes. Also beta blockers can cause cold extremities As a side effect. So some of your cold Shivering may be due to that. Changing the time of day you take this Drug may help. ( Metaprolol) There is a wonderful drug checker at www.drugs.com I'd also suggest you keep track of your Blood pressures at home several times a day. Take it also if you have another Shivering episode. See if it falls very Low at those times.
