Be careful in that regard. The normal blood tests used for diabetes screening don't tell the whole story. My fasting glucose and A1c results are well below even pre-diabetic levels, but I definitely have a problem. It showed up on the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test in the form of a high 1 hour reading, and subsequent self-monitoring of my glucose levels at home show just how high my glucose levels go and remain when I eat carbs.
Between my body type, cholesterol levels and other criteria, I was not considered a diabetes risk. If not for the SFN, I would have never requested the OGTT and done the self-monitoring. That being said, I still don't know what is going on, and I probably won't unless I go to an endocrinologist. All I know for sure is that my glucose levels run high under certain circumstances for prolonged periods of time, and that can cause the nerve issues associated with SFN. Well, in the last few weeks I have begun to suffer a lot more symptoms of PN during the day. Bilateral heel pain that just washed over my feet. At least a dozen times a day. Sometime pretty painful. Most times not. Also a tingling/burning/itching in the sole of my right foot. And a fluttering in the left fifth distal metatarsal of the right foot.
I had been diagnosed with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) by way of a blood test. I asked for a second opinion and was sent to the University of Washington to see Dr. Leo Wang. A real good doctor. He gave me a thorough neurological exam and said, "You don't have MMN." I had no symptoms, which is assymetrical weakness. This was a great relief tome. I can live with the PN if it doesn't get a whole lot worse. I don't know if it will progress though. There is damage, yes. But will there be more damage, is the question. I am very relieved about not having MMN. |
