Default why would stress cause flares? Medically

speaking. I was just curious as to whether anyone might be able to offer me a scientific or medical explanation, so to speak, as to why stress would cause a small fiber neuropathy flare-up? There has to be a reason, but I don't know why it would be.

Thanks in advance for any input on this.

Google physical symptoms of stress. Be sure to block off your schedule for at least 12 hours.

I believe it is biochemical. Stress increases cortisol which increases PGE2 cytokines, (cox-2)... these are inflammatory.

It is pretty complex biochemistry... But Dr. Sears has explanations about inflammation in his books.

For almost a year "stress" made me feel like I was suffocating. I felt like I couldn't get a satisfying breath. After all sorts of medical testing I was simply breathing improperly and hyper focused on my breathing.

Stress can cause all kinds of funky physical symptoms and ailments.

Often when stressed we breath less deeply and subconsciously tighten our muscles..
That might be part of it.

Try breathing deeply and fully expelling the air - diaphragmatic breathing not upper chest breathing..
If really stressed the "corpse " yoga pose with deep breathing is very relaxing

I'm a shallow breather when I'm stressed, (which is most of the time) and I believe that definitely contributes to my PN flares.

I learned a lot about proper breathing over the past couple years.

One thing that has really helped me is to avoid taking deep gasps with my mouth. When stressed I make sure to keep my mouth closed and breathe through my nose. It's very difficult to over breathe by breathing through my nose.
