Default Has anyone tried the Paleo diet and had symptom reduction for PN

Hello,

I have been researching the Paleo diet and how it can benefit people that have Neuropathy. Has anyone tried this diet and had success in minimizing the symptoms of Neuropathy (Any type)? Both Dr Terry Walls and Jack Kruse among others speak about the benefits of this diet for feeding cell growth that can in return aid in nerve development.
Thaks to Sally for pointing me in the right direction!

i think you will find most diet recommendations for PN point to some type of LOW CARB plan.

I can say that I follow a strict LoCarb diet and have had NO RELIEF from diet alone.

Without pointing out/getting into the fallacies in the hype, it's essentially the same as many other high protein/low carb, and gluten-free diets.

Yes, I've been on one for a few years now. While it's been beneficial in losing/maintaining my weight better than any other diet I've tried, and is effectual in controlling chronic pain in general (the reason I began it), I can't say it's had as much (if any) effect on my PN symptoms as the supplements I'm taking.

The information from Dr. Wahl's is great! I have other books also but like her story so much. She goes into a lot of detail. I eat much more variety of greens now. Sea veg. are important. The amount of different kinds of greens, Kale etc. it important. It isn't just about low carb, high protein at all.

My doctor wanted me to stop sugar and bad carbs so I did. It made my recovery much faster since the nerves are free of the problems sugar brings. Then the supplements can actually heal much better.

The book is full of information about mitochondria also. Information about Nerve Growth Factor hormones in the brain (Neuroprotection) is good too. It isn't just about not having carbs, but having a diet rich in micronutritents and antioxidents. Nerves have to have foods and supplements to get rid of oxidation, toxins. They need to be free of sugar and the wrong carbs so inflammation is gone and then supplements, exercise, sleep and foods can help them heal.

I would hate to know what would have happened if I didn't have Integrative MD's that knew how to help my Autonomic Neuropathy and Peripheral Neuropathy, also my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It would have been a different outcome. I would be unable to sit up. I have Dysautonmia and the blood was not able to be pumped up to my head and heart.

I was in bed, then a w.chair. (LONG awful story) Now I can walk for a long time, not dizzy. I could not even turn my HEAD for a long time. I am healing. My family, hubby, parents, are all so happy. I am so happy not to have to worry my parents anymore I was so very ill.

Default Absolutely!

The paleo diet works wonders, but it takes a lot of time to get used to. I followed this diet for a couple of weeks and noticed decreased pain and tiredness. I also notice increased energy and - I'm not exactly how to describe this - but my mind was sharper. It felt wonderful. It takes a lot of studying on what you can eat and it takes a lot of will power, but it is do-able.

Sallysblooms, are you saying you partially or fully reversed your PN? Is your story posted here somewhere?
Thanks
Ron

Default healthy oils help nerves

Just to add ... lots of healthy oils can help nerves (i.e. nuts, seeds, olive oil, fish oil).

I went the cowards route and studied for the diet but ended up modifying to a customized diet that I think I can stay with for life. I went more of the high protein-low carb direction for sugar and inflamation issues. For me reduced inflamation and glucose control equates into better PN symptoms anyway. I now need to find some combination of leafy greens that I can fall in love with. I was raised up believing that greens were just rabbit food and I had no clue that so many essential nutrients were missed the way I ate. I guess for me it's "baby steps". Good Luck, Ken in Texas.
