The things I have found that worked for me:

1. Stretchy / Elastic laces that allow the shoes to be worn a little loose than regular laces.

2. Birkenstock sandals & clogs

3. World's Softest Socks (might be out of business)

4. Soft Spot Supremes

5. New Balance athletic shoes

I've always hate, hate, hated wearing shoes. I always wear flip flops in warm weather and since I worked at home....in the winter I would wear Tom's. They have minimal arch support. Now that I have neuropathy, I hate shoes even more. My feet don't hurt. They are just so numb and I have trouble walking. I drag my left foot. So my neurologist say NO flip flops.....but, I still wear them. I heard Berkenstocks or Danskos are good.

I use the stretch laces too now in my athletic shoes. These were targeting kids, but I find they take the strain off the tying pressures on my insteps. My feet go numb quickly with regular laces. I buy mine at Famous Footwear.

Mine are the curly type.... like this:

But there are other types that are more normal looking.
I use an alternate lacing pattern too, to take some of the pressure off the instep.

Thanks everyone! I just wanted to follow up and let you know what i ended up doing.

I went to a specialty shoe store and talked to a knowledgeable guy that helped me try several different styles on. The sandles with straps didn't work for me, because I can't stand the straps touching my foot.

I wound up getting flip flops from Vionic. It has very good arch support and i was told they will last a long time. Im still getting used to the stiffer construction and im developing a sore where the strap hits the base of my big toe, but thats not unusual for me with new flip flops. Ill try and remember to give u all an update when i have a little history with them.

Not sure if this would help. I have New Balance 608 shoes. and I replaced the laces with elastic laces I got at Amazon. I'd post the site, but I'm new and I guess I have to post more before I can post links...
Just go to Amazon and type this in: LOCK LACES (Elastic No Tie Shoelaces)
It really helps me.

Memory Foam Insoles

I figured I could latch that thought onto this shoe thread, weave it in, lace it, if you will.

Will you support that idea or arch your eyebrow in contempt? Too many puns? I am waiting for my son to fall asleep so I can sneak out of his room. Shadows have taken a good sleeper and thrown fear into the mix.

Jon, Since you have mentioned memory foam insoles, I have wanted to try them. I finally found some in stock today at a shoe store! I am anxious to walk on them! :D

Regular shoes/sneakers have limited depth to accommodate insoles, they cannot be very thick. The ones I have found seem too thin to cause any balance issues, yet... we are all different in some ways.

I will update on my experience with the memory foam insoles.
Thanks for mentioning these, Jon!

Hi. I just ran across this old post and may as well update everyone.

Looks like its been almost a year now and I'm still wearing the Vionics flip flops. Thats a long time considering its the only thing I've worn since I got them.

Anyway, I give 2 thumbs up for Vionics!

Btw, the support has really been good and my legs feel much better than while wearing other brands.

I never was much of a flip-flop person, but now that I have PN, they won't stay on my feet at all. Because my toes will not bend the floppers will just go flying off my feet. I just bought a pair of tennis shoes with memory foam in them and they felt very good in the store. But, because my balance is shot I ended up pulling the inserts out and putting in the insoles from my old shoes. My feet don't burn or hurt like a lot of folks so I am lucky in that regard, but I have to lace them up pretty tight so they don't slide around on my feet because of the lousy balance.
