Default Help with side effect of nausea

Hi All,

I'm planning on giving Gabapentin another try is there any anything that can help with nausea? On the first that attempt I only lasted for two pills.

Thank you,

Cliffman

it always helps me to take meds with foods, at least to start. I assume you are starting out at 100mgX3/day?

I've had nausea for 6 going on 7 years now and have tried everything out there. Sometimes you get a few hours of relief with pills, anti motion sickness pills work the best for me. Walmart has them really cheap. 100 pills for less than $7., Equate is the brand. I have also had some relief with Robinul. That's what they give you in hospital before surgery to dry up all your secretions. I haven't take that too often, only when nothing else works. Like Ginger tea, that helps sometimes, when I can get it down. Sometimes just putting a Tums in my mouth helps. I don't get heartburn often, but when I do it's terrible. I also take Zantac. I can tell when I need one of those, it's when my stomach is really empty, I also need to keep something in my stomach, every couple hours I need to eat something. I have to watch the spicy foods, that really gets the nausea going. Also watch that you go #2 at least every 2nd day or else!

Sometimes you just can't take certain meds.

Try Stevia ginger ale. I know it sounds simple, but it works for me. I am taking a antibiotic that is really rough on the stomach and that helps. Also take your pills in the middle of a meal so your stomach is coated.

Tongue

I had the worst time with a med I was taking for HBP. I was doubled over in pain, I was bleeding in my urine and all my hair fell out. Took that for 7 months and just stopped on my own and guess what? I had a stroke. I think it was from that med.

I also made sure that about 20 minutes after (taken with food, of course), I would drink at least one glass of water.

Good luck!

Default Nausea

Hi, I'm new here so I had some advice to share based on what I've discovered about gabapentin.

I took it for chronic knee pain a few years ago, and it worked. I found taking it once a do at bedtime worked really well- because it made me loopy, tired. I had slight nausea but it went away.

I have read so many people in this forum are on Lyrica (which is the same thing as gabapentin) have severe withdrawals from taking Lyrica. My back doctor gave me the prescription and I took it for a few days, and woke up one day walking funny- my equallibrium was off.

What works for nausea is fresh raw ginger. Spicy but I found taking it covered in honey, swallowed, diced and spoonful amount worked. It's also great for alth benefits, and aches and pains, gastritis etcetera.

But recent studies done outside of America have noted that drugs like gabapentin, Lyrica kill nerves and stop the growth of new nerves. That's how it blocks the pain. So now, I live in chronic pain using OTC meds. Muscle relaxers also. But when I say ginger works, it can be taken like I said, or simmered for 15 minutes in water, add lemon and desired tea flavored, sweetened and enjoyed as a beverage, boosting immunity. Its also great in treating colds, and allergies.

Cliff,

Are we talking "I feel ill" or completion of feeling ill on the nausea? I have found with just about every medication I have tried or am on for pn there is a side effect involved. Gabapentin was too much for me too. I didn't start that low, it was 300 mg 3x a day I believe, but it was a short lived experiment. It was muddy brain more than nausea, but I think that played in.

On top of the other great ideas to mitigate nausea if it is passing "I don't feel right" variety you may want to see if that passes with time. While I am no longer on Lyrica it got me through a long time. It started becoming ineffective and when I became aware of hiw it affected me cognitively side effect wise I made a decision to try something else.

Right now I am on Topamax which keeps the shooting pains minimal if I don't overdo it, but does nothing for the buzzing (which give credit where it is due, Lyrica was pretty good at). Topamax still gives me a slight metalic taste in my mouth. Not fun. It beats the shooting pains, though. Quid pro quo, indeed.

I hope you find something useful that you can tolerate. This is a bear, this disease. Mindfullness is one of my best tools at the moment. It works sometimes better than others. I've also taken to reducing stress everywhere I can in my life
My almost 4 year old refuses to move out, though.

Kidding, I love the boy and he certainly takes my mindfullness into a Jedi framework.

Good luck, Cliff.Jon

Red Mill Baking Soda is my good friend. I use it a few times a day to keep acid down in my body. I can't help but believe pharmaceticuls are acid forming in our bodies. And what causes all the side effects, we'll never know, but maybe acid doesn't help.
