Active (methylfolate) is available OTC... Metanx has 2mg which makes it RX because of the dose only.
Metafolin and others can easily be bought online. 800mcg per tablet... you can take 2 if your doctor tells you to. example: iHerb.com - Customer Reviews -Solgar, Folate As Metafolin, 8 mcg, 1 Tablets If anyone decides to use Metanx...do so on an empty stomach. This manufacturer does not understand the need for oral B12 to be taken away from food and does not put this on its labels. Most doctors also don't understand that either. There is a good B complex called B-Right that contains both the active B6 ( called P5P)and methylfolate in it. Many people over the years including myself use this product with success..It is better than most B-50's and provides active forms of B's in a more modest dosage form, since some people report that high B6 bothers them.
