You may be thinking of R-lipoic acid. It is an essential cofactor for enzymes like the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.
It comes in two forms, R-lipoic acid (which is biologically active) and S-lipoic acid (which is biologically inactive). R-lipoic acid is not an essential nutrient because it is made normally in the body. It is readily available as a supplement.
