Default My experience

Melody,
I wear pants almost exclusively. When I had to wear the Cam Walker Boot thing. I would put on knee high socks, the kind that go under boots. Then I put my foot in the boot (with my pants inside it too). I would take the front crease of my pants, pull it out and then fold it over to the inside of my leg and then wrap the padded part of the boot over the pants with them inside the padding. Then I strapped the boot on. I wore this thing for 5 months this way. You have to blouse the pants slightly above the boot in order to give yourself room to bend your knees.

Billye:

Alan is a security guard two nights a week. Because he has to wear this contraption, he doesn't want anyone to see it on him. That's why the uniform pants have to go OVER the boot. They hide the boot. The only thing that sticks out from under the bottom of the pants is the bottom of the shoe boot and it looks likes Alan is wearing a sandal.

Last night when Alan showed up for guard duty, the supervisor happened to be there. Alan kept thinking "what if he looks down and sees I'm wearing one regulation uniform shoe, and my other shoe is the Shoe Boot thing"

But that didn't happen. The guy didn't notice Alan's feet.

But I get you on the knee-hi thing. I went to check out the TEDS at my local drug store. They were right near the support hose.

I opened the box and they looked exactly like a pair of knee-hi's (maybe with a little more compression to them). And they cost $27.99. I don't think so.

So I walked over to the Big/Tall Man shop that is not to far from my house. There are two of them within two blocks of each other.

I walk into the first one and I say "Okay, here's what I need, I need a tall pair of men's socks, stretchy like diabetic socks, but reaching to the knee". The guy says "I have exactly what you need" and he produces the longest pair of socks I have ever seen. They looked like they would fit a basketball player. I examined them and there was no stretch to them. They were just long men's dress socks and they did not have the stretchability of diabetic socks. So I simply said "Okay, let me make this simple, you know diabetic socks??, well I want really long diabetic socks, up to the knee".

The guy says "oh, they don't make those!!!" and I said "why not, don't the companies know that 6'8 inch people who have diabetes will need really long diabetic socks"??? The guy laughed and said "well, if they make them, I don't sell them". Then he told me to go to the store two blocks away. Another guy followed me there because he was looking for some long socks also.

So we go into the second Tall/Big Men's store, and I begin my search for a pair of super long diabetic socks. The guy says "They don't make them".

So I leave and I find myself in front of a fabric store. A lightbulb goes off in my head and I say "I don't need socks, I need some felt that I can place on Alan's shin, so there will be no rubbing".

So I go in, pay $2.00 for this nice comfortable piece of felt. Tonight, Alan will cut it to fit his boot and all will be accomplished.

And he will never wear those compression things again.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Yes indeed

lol

Default Alan just called me a genius!!!!

lol

We just got Alan all ready with his uniform for tonight's shift. We took the felt thing (we did two layers cause it's thin). I measured Alan's calf from the ankle to below the knee (like where the boot reaches on the top.

Then I cut the piece of felt to fit around Alan's calf. Alan said "how are we going to hold this in place??" I just put a strip of velcro on both sides. One fit over the other and the piece of felt wrapped around his calf. Very comfortably. Then he put on the boot (that is a whole other ballgame, with all the velcro straps that keep getting stuck to each other).

But we did it. He said "oh my god, this is so comfortable, I never should have bought those compression socks".

So we solved a problem for a couple of bucks worth of felt. No rubbing and he's walking better.

Hallelulah!!!

Well, Melody, you seem to have a knack for using common sense to solve problems. You are very resourceful. Also, I wanted to tell you that your posts are so amusing and also so human -- they have gotten me through some difficult times with my pain. I look forward to them every evening when my pain goes up. You are very good for me.

HI Dakota:

Thanks so much for the nice words. We all have different amounts of stress in our lives. Pain causes stress. Kids cause us stress. Different things cause us stress. I have come to a certain part in my almost 60 years on this earth that I am allowing myself to be as stress-free as possible.

Today I put on a green outfit. What's a green outfit?? It's a pretty green and white gauze skirt, a white blouse, and some pretty green hanging things around my neck. Little tiny green earrings, and a bright little green pocketbook that you wear either like a shoulder bag or like the bandoleros do when they wear their ammunition.

Then I paired the whole outfit with my bright green crocs.

Now why is this so interesting?? Because for most of my life, I have worn black, navy blue, dark colors, tunic tops, whatever. That was my mental mode most of my life because I was severely overweight and had lots of trouble with my son.

So (and this took some time), I lost the weight and began throwing away the black outfits. If you think this is easy to do, believe me, it's way out of one's comfort zone. I have to consciously take my mind off of my pain (I have bad arthritis, sometimes I get the burning in my feet, but with the Methyl B-12, it's much better, I have scoliosis that hits you with a jackknife pain that it sometimes leaves me breathless.

But because I got up this morning and I'm alive, I say "what the hel*!!!

Yesterday, you should have seen me in Kings Plaza. I had to go there to pick up Alan's orthotics. He was home sleeping.

You should have seen me in Claire's (it's a nice cheap jewelry store) and everything is color-coordinated. They have necklaces, earrings, bracelets, all in different colors, and I'm looking around and I'm wearing my hot pink outfit and I felt good. Some guy walked over to me with a little basket and said "would you like a basket for your purchases??" I just looked at him.

You have to understand. I have never done this in over 35 years. I was in a bad place in my head so I couldn't put myself first. I now must do this. I must put myself first.

So there I was picking up this pair of earrings, the matching necklace, this little dodad, that little dodad, I must have bought 3 necklaces, two bracelets, and some earrings. All for the sum of $36.00.

Never had so much fun, just to be able to go into a store and buy something pretty for myself.

So today, I put the green necklace on my outfit.

Right now, my back is like sharp daggers. But I'll take a breath, move a bit, and it will go away.

But the biggest thing I just did was email my son and explain that we have to distance ourselves from each other because the stress he puts on my health, well, I can't do this for a while. I did what I had to do.

Sometimes we have to put ourselves first.

Oh, yesterday, I went to Bath and Body Works, you should have seen me spraying this scent on (these scents don't bother me, in fact they are very soothing),

Well, for $3.50 I bought a little thing of body lotion. It's the latest favorite thing. It's called Japanese Cherry Blossom. So if you like nice fragrances, and they don't bother your senses, you will absolutely love this one.

I know that some of us can't go near any kind of perfume, aromas, whatever. But in my case, it's the nail salons and cleaning product that do me in.

Whenever I go into a Bath and Body Works store, and I use their lavender products or, as I did yesterday, their Japanese Cherry Blossom, well, you should have seen Alan, when I came home and made him smell my arm.

Let's just say, his olfactory senses are still alive. He absolutely loved it.

So go and do something nice for yourself today.

And thank you for the nice words.

Melody

I agree, Mel. Buying bling reduces pain and depression. I know what I am doing tomorrow!
