I've always had sensitive skin--even as a child I could not tolerate a wide range of fabrics, and would complain that too many felt "itchy"--but after the full-body acute onset burning neuropathy, this was quite obviously ratcheted up a few thousand percent.
Of course, during the most acute phase of the onset, before the Neurontin began to ease the burning pain symptoms, I couldn't tolerate ANY clothes or fabrics near my skin, not even bedsheets. The symptoms are much improved now, but I still cannot tolearte most fabrics, and some days are worse than others. I have some particular "hotspots"--the left side of my abdomen and my left shoulder--that often feel irritated, almost as if they have dried out (and in fact they may be), and the touch of all but the softest fabrics are very annoying. I tend to wear very loose and soft clothing all the time now--sweats, thick cotton t-shirts, fleece. I am fortunate that I am in a line of work that allows me to get away with this and rarely requires a more typical working wardrobe. |

I find that I can't stand the socks I normally wear. They're a nice cushy stretchy type of sock but they make my feet burn (?). Not really sure how to describe the feeling. And shoes are the same way: They must not put any pressure anywhere on my toes or insteps. Drives me absolutely *nuts*! So, I tend to go barefoot or wear my slip on sandals most of the time. I don't know what I'm going to do when it gets *really* cold.

Wow I had no idea how many PN sufferers had this sensitivity problem! Mine seems to be getting worse at the moment and it's not something to look forward to getting worse!
Does anyone have any speculation on what's going on when we feel like this???

I ususally use the mornings to do my errands, volunteer work, etc. while my pain level is at its lowest. Then I come home at noon or 1:00 and tear off all my clothes and put on nice loose pyjamas to lie down on the couch and deal with my pain. I also am a compulsive sock buyer -- I buy everything that looks comfortable! Some work for awhile and then I toss them. Some are awesome and I can't wait for them to get out of the wash so I can wear them again! I am the sock queen!

jarrett,
I'm with you! I love flip flops and sandals! Years ago I used to love the thick white sweat socks you wear with sneakers....I can't even look at them now without getting antsy. I describe it to people (and they don't get it by the way but the description makes perfect sense to me) as feeling claustrophobic in socks and shoes...my feet just want to be free and unencumbered! |

HI Hurty!
That's the exact word I was fumbling for....Claustrophobic! As I looked at my clothes yesterday morning I thought.....I can't put those jeans and that shirt on today.....I just couldn't! They aren't even real tight clothes.....but still I couldn't put them on!

Try Flax brand and fabric in the summer and into the fall. I wash them in fragrance free detergent, use fragrance free fabric softner then take them to the cleaners to have them pressed. You hang them to dry or tumble for just a few minutes and then hang them to dry before either pressing them, steaming them or taking them somewhere to be pressed. Here's a link to where you can buy: http://www.flaxdesigns.com/ and there are more of them. They come in two weights. Really light weight and summer weight. Also they make a heavier weight for Fall. I buy them locally. And in the winter, I wear jeans with spandex in them being careful not to buy them too small. I wear the relaxed version. And wear tops that hang free. I still hate clothing, but can wear these things more comfortably than others. I buy dresses that hang free from the shoulders.
