For those with joint and bone issues, (myself amongst them) this article may provide some information. Below is an excerpt and below that the link to the full article. The name of the condition 'Charcot Joint' is in a way, misleading...sounds like a disease or form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease or CMT or HSAN, however, a charcot joint is not only related to those conditions. Joint problems occur due to neuropathy and are also called neurogenic arthropathy. You can do a search under neurogenic arthropathy, but often Charcot Joints will come up.
"Any condition that causes sensory or autonomic neuropathy can lead to a Charcot joint. Charcot arthropathy occurs as a complication of diabetes, syphilis, chronic alcoholism, leprosy, meningomyelocele, spinal cord injury, syringomyelia, renal dialysis, and congenital insensitivity to pain. Diabetes is considered to be the most common cause of Charcot arthropathy." Diabetes is considered the most common cause...because diabetes is the most common cause of PN....so a Charcot Joint is a messed up joint or bone due to neuropathy regardless of cause.
