Hi to all,
Just came from a visit with a new neuro. He asked me to search some information on street drugs as causing neuropathy, mainly the new drugs such as dimethylcathinone. I tried to look in the internet but couldn't find anything. Can you please help me in finding this information. On the other side - I would like to know if you know about people that were exposed to drugs and get SN? Thanks in advance Rina |

(I'm not drug user - as can be mistakely understood from my previouse post). Thanks in advance |

Hi Rina:
While I am not familiar with street drugs, I did find this paragraph on the internet: "The chronic use of cocaine, heroin, and alcohol has also caused peripheral neuropathy, thrombocytopenia, renal problems, and other systemic illnesses, that are treated with high doses of corticosteroids and other immunosuppressent agents. Since the 1970s, the prescriptions containing glucocorticoids have increased tremendously to treat more than forty medical conditions in AIDS risk groups. These are the factual causes of AIDS in drug users and not HIV." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is this what you meant by Street Drugs??

I am still not understanding this post,as a lab tec are you saying he
is not to bright, why wouldn't he know it's on the list of questions, Also for what he's being paid,he should be doing his job not you.. You could try the library at a medical school. Or change Dr. Oh I'm not calling you a addict, just a odd question,I know what Mel has said could cause it,could you e-mail or go to the place you worked. Also I would like to hear what you find out..Sue |

Rina,
I THINK I know what you might be saying as being a lab tech. Perhaps exposure to certain chemicals? I know I might be mixing apples and oranges here but my niece is an Emergency Vet Tech and I know there has been more than once that she was stuck with a needle. Anyway, she contracted Guillain Barre and yes it was from a virus (determined in the long run). However, the neurologists also had a spinal tap done to see if and what she had been exposed to. The Disease Board was also on hand trying to help figure it out. And it was amazing; there were two things; can't remember them now and I would have to ask her, that showed up in her spinal fluid and from dogs; one was Parvo exposure but I forget the other one. Anyway, she was treated with two or three IVIG's and recovered. As far as street drugs go, I don't know other than what Melody posted. Last edited by Kathi49; 03-16-2008 at 07:18 AM. First off WHY is your neuro asking you to do the research? He's the one who has the better/best access to papers and other info.
I did do a search for 'toxic neuropathy' and found three sources that mite fill the bill tho.... Then you can go on from there? http://www.neurology.org/cgi/content/abstract/66/3/324 http://www.emedicine.com/NEURO/topic378.htm http://www.neuropathy.org/site/PageS...ame=Type_Toxic Happy reading? As a lab tech you will probably be able to zero in on the problem toxins... That this neuro is saying 'street drugs' tho...that doesn't exactly spark trust and inspiration in my mind or heart tho in him....You know what I mean. Good luck and keep us all informed - j |
