Default Thanks for the inspiring story.

It's so good to hear stories like yours to counter the horrible news from Iraq and places like our heartland flooding.

I agree with you, all sentient beings are worth saving even if some risk and discomfort are involved. They deserve good treatment from us, especially our "best friends" like dogs and cats, and the ones who support us like poultry, pigs, cows, horses, etc. A day after your adventure, you'll be no worse for wear, and the good feeling from doing the right thing will last for a long time.

What part of the world do you live in? From your name (Cyclops), I assume you're from somewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean area where Ulysses had his epic adventure. I read in the news that they recently had record snowfall there.

The story of my screen name is in that thread-screen names....I live in the country, in about the most distant 'ring' outside of what can only be referred to as the Boulder of the Midwest....not the mideast....and yes, we had a White Spring Equinox. Under snow since Nov. 3rd.... Lakes should be melted by April 15-30th in the southern half of the state. I wouldn't be on any of them now, altho I hear, up about 100 miles, the ice is still 14 inches thick. I am wondering if we have messed up the thermohaline circulation and are headed for the new ice age. Seems that way to me, from my perspective.

All this talk about ice and freezing and being numb....well, it brings up a story I just read in the latest issue of Readers Digest.

It seems an Aunt and her Niece wanted to take a cruise. They are travellers and love to travel all over the world.

So where was their final destination (the place that they had never been to??).

ANTARCTICA!!!!

As I am reading this story, as soon as I came across the word Antarctica, I just stared and said "are these people out of their mind, who on earth would pay to go to Antarctica???"

Well, it seems that these two people paid $8000 each to take this cruise. It was some kind of navigational learning cruise where you go on tours throughout the ship and learn all about this continent.

So again, I'm thinking? "They paid to go and be cold???"

So guess what happened to them on this cruise??

The ship hit an iceberg and they had to abandon ship.

So I'm thinking. "These people paid $8000 to get on a boat, sail to Antarctica and their boat HITS AN ICEBERG. Is this for real??? Well, it was.

These people all had to get in a metal life boat and some were freezing but they all helped each other and they were rescued.

And on one of the pages of this article was a photo. OF THE CRUISE SHIP, STUCK IN THE ICEBERG.

Just thinking of how cold this must be sent shivers through me.

Oh, the cruise line didn't even refund their money. They only got something like $1600 to cover the cost of their clothes.

Oh brother!!!

Antarctica? Obviously, none of these people had Raynaud's or any other circulatory issues!

We got our first significant snow on December 1st, and we've had at least some snow on the ground ever since. Not as bad as some areas, but a few weeks ago, when it was minus 20 degrees at noon with a minus 45 degree wind chill, it was more than enough for me, thanks. Am questioning the sanity of having moved to South Dakota (have been here a year and four months) even though we really had no choice financially speaking.

I hope the owners of that Lab are keeping a better eye on him/her and are properly grateful that the life of their wonderful critter was saved.

Here's the picture of the cruise ship stuck in the ice.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Antarctica, it is the last frontier....I don't think they are really well enough equipped to take large numbers of tourists down there. I saw that on CNN when it happened, and it would have scared me...well, no matter, I am not going to Antarctica....I am not all that fond of being on boats....anywhere. I am a landlubber.

My shoes finally dried this evening. I had to put a fan on them and keep them by the heating duct. They were just running shoes.

I hope doggie is warm, dry and well fed....and as much as the pond helps wildlife people have to remember to keep things like logs etc in them for critter to happen to fall in. I keep floating driftwood in my water feature for gophers or chipmunks who fall in...they can cling to it until they get close enough to jump to a rock. And I have a small water feature.

Putting in big ponds is all the rage around the state, and, they have a downside....if that dog had been out any further, water would have been over our heads and a far more serious rescue and the dog may not have made it....it would have involved a cold water swim not walk, and that gets a whole lot more tricky...and the fire department did not respond to this call, just the county sheriff, who was very nice and not going to let the dog drown, either....numb feet came in handy...felt a tad cold when they first got wet, but felt nothing more the whole time...my feet usually feel cold.

I am watching HGTV and these folks are looking at a house in Belize....I could do Belize....probably wouldn't need doctors if I lived there. (I would probably acquire some tropical parasite or two.)

Wow. You are a hero. At least it was a happy ending too. Did you find out how the animal got loose? I hope it was an accident. I hate when I see animals with out a leash. It just takes them seeing something to run off. This reminds me of my gramps. Not an animal story but he was walking with his gf on the boat doc and she fell in and he jumped in after her. He is 85. It was so amazing and he has his own health issues too. Well you definetly did your good dead
