Default kidney failure, my kitty

I don't know what to do. My Kitty J.D.is 16 yrs. old. He was recently diagnosed with kidney failure. We give him an I.V. twice a day as is Doctors orders. He goes through the house part of the time crying and it breaks my heart. I don't want him in pain and I have heard that the I.V. therapy really isn't going to make him better. He is the best kitty and for 16 yrs. he has been my best friend. Just writing about him, I am crying. What to do? I guess I know the real answer but don't want to face it.
Thank you, Doodle bug7
