MrsD, was there anything that new/surprising to you about feline behavior?

I'd love to see a similar study of dogs, but alas -- leash laws pretty much put the kibosh on that. I remember seeing a bit on Letterman(?) years ago where he put a cam on his dog's head and went out for the day. As he left, he admonished the dog (Bob?) to stay off the furniture. After closing the door, it wasn't but a few seconds before the "camera" jumped up on the couch and settled in for a multi-hour nap, jumping down to greet Dave as he heard the rattle of the doornob.... (The again, the whole bit may have been a setup, albeit a believable one.
.
)

In college, there were many "campus" dogs. Nobody knew who they really belonged to (if anyone) but every student on campus knew their (alleged) names and habits. One (known as "Sam") that frequented our dorm regularly rode the elevators and seemingly had a "route" of various rooms, suites, & lounges, scoring plenty of treats, affection, & play along the way. It wasn't unusual to find him naping/snoozing on the bed of anyone who happened to leave their door open. After a while -- anywhere from a few seconds to several hours -- he'd move along and check out what was happening elsewhere.

Cats & dogs have no idea how good they have it -- or do they?

I was a bit impressed with how the cat in the fox encounter sensed the fox long before it showed up on the video...seems the cat got to higher ground quickly.

I was also curious about how different the walking styles were
between all the cats. Cats have a more acceptable outdoor life in Britain, than here. Here there is a sharp division between inside cats and outside cats, and people who dare to let their cat out are frowned upon. The Humane Society and many rescues will not let an outside cat owner adopt at all anymore.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting that.

I found it interesting that Hermie the hermaphrodite cat had the largest roaming territory. (around 8 acres!).

In my neighbourhood there are 4 regular visitors apart from my own and they appear to have a pecking order. Whether that's due to genetics or not I don't really know but imagine it might be. My cat gets beaten up a lot unfortunately. I've actually seen her cower and roll over in a submissive way when approached by larger cats, the same as young lions and tigers, however if I'm out there with her and another animal (including dogs!) walks by, she'll take off after them.
.
It's as if she's showing me how brave she is or something. I don't think she realizes how tiny she is.

It's usually determined in the litter, and then repeated when cats share territory, e.g. more than one ion a household. Genetics may influence aggression to some extent, but it can be learned as well.

She may be the smaller, the younger.... or just a wuss.

Ah yes. She is a bit of a wuss and she is quite tiny although not young. The other cats who come over here to visit her probably have her all figured out already.

My older, neutered male cat has chased foxes out of our yard in his younger days! Just a few days ago he chased away a stray cat that was sitting at the edge of the property.

Default Hi Mrs.D

really cool for you to send the vidio. Wish me luck.. am nursing a 4 day old kitten who was abandoned. Feeding by eye dropper. It is down at the hospital and if it makes it, I will give it a forever home. So small, so fragile, but feeding it is a hoot. wines, the whole time it feeds. ginnie
