I adopted a less-than-a-year old neglected (and possibly abused) Black Labrador Retriever. And when I mean adopted I mean I finally got *a person* to give me this sweet dog in trade for my Kurig Coffee Machine.
This puppy, who I named Barnaby Jones AKA Buddy, is amazingly sweet and very smart. However he is extremely attention seeking and can be jealous of my other 11 YR old black lab. My issue: he can be aggressive. And I am not sure how to deal with this while he is young? The awkward part is that he is not dominantly aggressive, or even fearfully aggressive. So far the only time he has shown aggression is through protecting me (even though it is not necessary i.e. growling at my other dog). Any advice on this poor puppy? Also: he is a good dog and very obedient with me (besides a couple puppy things anyway). He is also incredibly smart and very interested in his surroundings (in a very amazing and good way!). All those are very characteristic of a lab, except the possessiveness of me. I was told he might be part German Shepard, but I don't know if that fits? . |

Hi Sweets,
Evaluating canine aggression is best done in person, on-site (in your home or where he displays the aggressive behavior) by a professional. I would contact your local ASPCA/shelter and ask for a trainer who specializes in behavioral problems—the sooner the better. . If the problem is as minor as you say, a good trainer should be able to solve it/help you in one session (though you will have to work with the dog for as long as necessary). Best wishes, Doc

Sounds like resource guarding.
There is a book called" mine" that addresses it.
