Doing a house visit here in town this week. The couple want to adopt Mia. Aww, she's so sweet.
I can't believe the new dogs I see every time I go to HUA's web site. While looking at Mia I saw another little fella, Eimer, whose family also fell on hard times. Here is Mia, the adoptee. . And here's the little guy I saw, Eimer. .

They are both precious! Then stoopid, stoopid me, I had to look at alllll the dogs for adoption. Aww, I want to take them all in.
. I hope they all find somebody to love them as much as I love all of mine.

LOL yes they have so many furbabies, bless their hearts.
Well, my visit was very revealing and they are not going to adopt poor Mia. The house they live in is 3 stories. A kitchen and gigantic living room downstairs, which they use when they have guests. But they primarily live on the 2nd and 3rd floors. 2nd is their real living space, family room den and such, and the bedrooms are on the 3rd floor. I took one looke at the hundreds of stairs and shuddered at the thought of a doxie running up and down those. They have 2 mini poodles who were having a ball racing up and down the stairs. So, I told them it would be best if they gated off the stairs and then carried Mia up and down them. There was a flight of stairs, a landing, and then another flight up to the 2nd floor, same going up to the 3rd. When I told them how careful you have to be with dachsunds they freaked and said that wouldn't do, that they couldn't gate the stairs. So they are going to look at different dogs, not dachsunds. I felt bad I talked them out of it, but Jenny at HUA assured me that was what I was for...to notice these kinds of things during house visits. But at least they are going to look for another.

Doody, you did the absolute right thing! I know you would feel just awful if they took the dachsund and something happened. Stairs are a definate No No for these little ones.
As least they are looking for another breed, every one that is saved is blessed!

See, I didn't know that about doxies - you did the right thing.
. I know my papillon would LOVE all those stairs. He will run down the open basement stairs, up to our 2nd floor, up the attic stairs. He even climbs a ladder to get out of the pool.

Thanks Dottie.
Brain, it's not that the doxies don't like the stairs, they love stairs and that's the problem. They have no fear of leaping off furniture and no fear of running up and down stairs! But it's bad for their backs. Ever since my daughter's Otto went down in December, I am so very careful with Bruna. It took that tragedy with Otto though before we started being more careful. We just didn't know how bad it could be or maybe more so that we took the attitude that, well everything will be okay.

I have a friend who has a doxie, he is 15 years old has gone up and down stairs all his life.....jumps off the back of the couch like its nothing, he has never had an issue.
Mya was 3yrs old when she had to have surgery, I was and still am very careful and TRY to keep her from jumping, but gosh they are quick!! The thing with these low riders is genetics play a hugh roll in the back problems. Another dog I know of has NEVER jumped, His Hoomom gives him all sorts of supplements , only natural foods no additives, this dog is more healthy that I am. he went down 3 weeks ago....its genetics just like with us. Many people just don;t know the genetics of the doxie they have. For me both of mine are rescues so I have no idea about their genetics. All we can do is take every precaution since we know they are predisposed to these types of problems. I think Corgis are another breed that has back issues too. .
