Default Ear Mites in Dogs???

I am adopting a dog that has a problem with ear mites. The owner told me that she had been treated by her vet for the problem but that she is doing a lot of itching.

Is there something I can use to control the itching so she can heal? Also are ear mites something that is regional. Here in northern Utah because of th very cold climate our dogs never get fleas.

Any help you can give will be fantastic. We will be meeting the dog this afternoon for the first time. The owner is bringing her to our house to see how she will react and how she will be taken care of. I'm so excited.

I'm getting the dog mostly for the Olhipie...he needs a companion and I do to for my walks. Her name is Lola and she just turned 1 in February. Isn't she a cutie!!!

Believe it or not, vinegar and water will help heal the itch and the ear mites. Just mix half and half and wash the dog's ears out with it. My husband's cousin is a vet for the zoo and swears by it.

hi there

One of my dogs went through a period of getting ear mites - the vet gave me some drops for it. I think we weren't clearing the problem up terribly well as it kept coming back, until we tried a longer course of treatment (I can't remember now, but maybe it was two weeks of drops instead of the regular one week of drops, or whatever is the normal length of time).

She now hasn't had them for years. I do totally swear by keeping dogs ears clean though, and I clean them every month or so. I just keep an eye on them and can tell when they start to get that "I need a clean look". You can buy stuff to clean their ears at pet shops, though I like the brand my vet uses so that's where I get mine from. I find clean ears keeps away infections and infestations (especially in my floppy eared golden retriever).

Poor thing, my dog catches everything. I feel bad for her when she gets mites, the scratching will drive her crazy. Plus she's not too pretty when whe's half bald.

In addition to getting rid of the mites you can give her benedryl to ease the itching and make her feel much better. Per my vets instructions, I started with a childs dose based on half the weight of the dog and increased the pills until she stopped itching and then kept it there until she is healed. It didn't take much.

Your new kid is really cute, I like her ears.

When my cat had mites it took three treatments and never came back. Good luck with the new dog!

I wonder if you could apply some olive oil or somethng similar to the dry areas and see if they soften up?

This is how I have always treated mites in my pets

.

Good luck.

By the way Lola is beautiful. She looks to be a pit bull mix. Great loyal dogs

She is a fantastic dog...she is a registered American Pit Bull. Thanks for the info...The mites are gone we are just trying to clear up the dryness from the ears and waiting for the hair to thicken up on her ears.

I got her for the Olhipie and they are wonderful together. My honey isn't fond of a licking dog but when Lola jump up on his lap let the licking begin. He will be reclined in his chair and she will come and lay beside him. While the Olhipie is in bed she will usually stay on the bed sleeping with him.

Just love you to pieces...don't get us dog lovers started or we can talk all night about our pups!!
