Trig She Never Had a Chance

I scooped up the little black and white dog into my arms and rushed her to my car. This was at the New Hope rest area off I95. Yet another innocent animal tossed out of a car just to get rid of them by a human. A human who is suppose to be the more intelligent species. I could feel every bone in her starving little body and I knew she had distemper and probably parvo but did she complain? No bless her heart. She spent all of her energy trying to wag her tail and enjoy the ride, not knowing it would be her last. She just sat there peacefully, with a weary smile through those matted eyes.

I was almost glad the trip is a long one to the vet because I knew what the outcome would be. I noticed how pretty she was under all the sickness and knew that she would have grown into a beautiful dog and loved her owner with all her might. She was covered in ticks and fleas and she smelled very bad, but that didn't matter as we neared the vet, I still held her close and could feel her heart having to work very hard just to keep beating.

As we sat waiting our turn, she lay in my lap and wagged her tail and looked at everyone who came in and out. She was such a sweet little dog and could have given the world so much, maybe even become a rescue dog and save a human's life someday, but she never had the chance, never had the chance to grow up and have her own family, never had the chance to go on a picnic at the park or chase a rabbit or cuddle up with her owner on a cold night to keep them warm, never had a chance to run through the tall grass on a warm summer evening chasing lightning bugs.

Then it was my turn to go in and the veterinarian took one look at her and shook her head. She gently took her as I walked out the door trying to see through the tears as I have done so many times before trying to save an innocent dog or cat's life that could have been easily prevented in the first place. The drive home was lonely and the little pieces of Hooper’s dog food I had put on the seat were still there because she was too sick to eat.

I am grateful I was around to give her one last ride and I am forever grateful to my veterinarian who has always been there for these innocent, suffering dogs and never charges me a dime. Please get your dogs their shots, it's that simple. If you are going to dump a dog, at least give them their shots before you do so they will have a fighting chance, a chance to be loved, a chance to give back that unconditional love.

BJ YOU ARE AN ANGEL!
Sorry to hear that she did not make it.
I wanted to share that I got my last dog ..from the side of inner state 95. I named her Gemini as it was the month of May last year when I rescued her .She lives with me and I have had her for 1 year now. At first she hated my cats barked chased them across the street and up the trees .. now she is fine with my cats and the cats come up and rub on her. Gemini turned out to be a wonderful friend and family pet
yes b.t.w. I just got both my dogs all their shots at a low cost clinic .
Really if you cant or do not want your pet just bring them to a shelter...give them a chance!!!!!! Do Not dump them on the side of a highway or the road. That makes me sick some one could be so heartless

The person that did this is far from human. I am deeply saddened by the thoughtless callous uncaring people that get pets and just throw them away.

All of my current pets are rescues and every one of them are precious souls. I often wonder what caused their previous owners to give them up.......one was found wandering the streets of the city I live in.

They are all such good pets. I would have many more if I could afford to. I have to tell myself its only fair to take as many as I can afford to take care of properly.

My 5 babies are spolied and I wouldn't have it any other way!

God bless this baby that did not make it......she runs free and healthy with a full belly at the rainbow bridge.

thank you BJ for trying to save her.

I was an animal control officer in the early 90s. Situations like this were a daily occurrence. You would be surprised by the number of unwanted animals that were dealt with at the Humane Society shelter daily. I helped the shelter staff euthanize animals. It was always a sad job but it had too be done. I've always said it is the irresponsible owners that needed to be euthanized.
I've had many pets over the years and only one was not rescued. I now have three beagles. In fact they just went to the vet today and got their shots that were due. Right now one is piled up on the couch sleeping and the other two are sacked out on my bed with my wife.

THANK YOU for taking responsibility for that poor pup. It takes a kind heart to do what you did.

BJ, you are so brave to have done that kind deed for the puppy, rather than allowing him to continue to suffer. Bless your big heart!
