What's for breakfast?
I have developed the habit of stopping at McDonalds in the morning and getting a hash brown and sausage biscuit for breakfast. I don't want to do that anymore. I don't need all that fat in my diet plus I can save money if I fix my own meal.
Here are the problems: 1. I don't and can't get up early enough to fix a meal and eat it before I go to work. 2. I hate breakfast food. I need to find something I can take to work with me. I have a microwave at work so I can heat things. There is also a toaster. I'm stumped for ideas as to what to take. Any suggestions? |
I take grapes or an orange or a pear to work and also have one of those fruit bars.
Sometimes I even eat the fruit... When I'm hungry, the cafeteria opens at 7 am - sausage gravy over biscuits! A can of ravioli or chili is kinda handy to have around too. Tom |
I buy Jimmy Dean turkey sausage/egg white/english muffin combo at Sam's Club. They have a 12 count package and total cost for me is less than making them from scratch. They are low fat and under 300 calories. And it's way cheaper than getting them from the corner quick stop! I saw a 4 count package of them in the freezer section at Walmart...a tad more expensive, but still cheaper than buying at the quick stop.

Nutritionally, not sure about anything, but kbow a sausage, croissant has LOTS of fat. Good for you changing your habits.
-toaster Strudel -Eggos Muggins -English muffin with egg and cheese - egg sandwich Sausage and bacon (while good ONCE in awhile) are evil!!!!!!!!!! I am not a great eater, but know this. |
Yogurt!! Activa has added benefits of live cultures to help BMs)

knittenkitten, you don't have to have "breakfast foods" for breakfast. I have been known to have fish, a salad or chicken for breakfast.
This morning my breakfast was yogurt and trail mix (low sodium). There are a lot of fast and easy things you can eat before leaving or take with you. If you like Bananas: slice length wise, spread peanut butter on each half and sprinkle grape nuts cereal on it. I also like smoothies...throw everything in a blender, pour into a travel mug and go. You might try fixing something up at night so you can grab it and go in the morning. |
If you like PB&J try putting it between two whole grain Eggo waffles. Yummy!
Also, sandwiches are easy to make and good for you. Turkey or chicken breast, lettuce, tomato and maybe a slice or two of pre-cooked bacon on whole wheat bread. Bagles (from home) with cheese and lean turkey or chicken with a light spread of veggie cream cheese is really good. I like to eat non-traditional things for breakfast....like leftover pizza or leftovers from the previous night's supper. I only like breakfast foods if I'm going out to eat. You can buy the same kind of hash browns you get at a fast food place at the grocery store and fix them at home. A couple of sessions in the toaster and they're done. Now I'm hungry and I wasn't before replying to this thread! |
I agree with Tom, sausage gravy over biscuits, as long as they are nice fluffy biscuits, not the hockey puck kind. But then I don't care about calories.

Nutrtionally, eating a piece of fruit is a good way to jump start your metabolism in the morning.
If you want something to grab and go in the AM, just put it in a plastic container the night before. Make it part of your nighttime ritual. Something a little messier but with added protein would be a breakfast I got out of the cookbook from the TV show The Biggest Loser. Slice a banana in half, spread peanut butter then with vanilla low fat yogurt. Sprinkle with granola. You could make everything and just wait until AM to sprinkle the granola. |
a package of instant oatmeal, and a small yogurt.
You can plop fresh or frozen fruit into a blender with yogurt, and juice, and whirrr! instant smootie that can be eaten or sipped in the car. Tons of ways to change the flavors. You can also add your powders or oils that you use for dietary suppliments. Grab a peice of fruit, and a wet paper towel, and out the door you go. Scrambled eggs only take a minute to whip up. Grapenuts HOT! pour in milk, and pop in the microwave! yum! Many places sell those prepackaged biscuit products, but they are also full of salts, fats, and so on. be careful to read the package. |
Thanks for all your ideas. They sound yummy. I'm going to start with the whole grain Leggos with peanut butter along with a yogurt. Once I get tired of that I can move on to English Muffins with peanut butter. I also thought of hard cooked eggs once in awhile. I can do this if I do not get lazy and stop packing my food.

Oatmeal Pack with a sliced into pennies banana. Whole-wheat English Muffin with peanut butter or cream cheese.

When skinny bones ds lived here, I made up bacon, eggs, cheese biscuit sandwiches and froze. Cheap eats, just microwave.
Trail mix sounds so good right now, thanks for that one! |
I also get stumped on things to bring to eat on the fly....as in flying out the door so I'm not late for work! I have a few things I keep handy, and they actually are working pretty good:
Yogurt and then have a ziplock of granola to sprinkle in it and it makes it pretty harty... LUNA "Nutz Over Chocolate -Whole Nutrician Bar for Women" which are high in protein (9g) and Fiber (3g) when I'm not in the mood for a 'breakfast' type food, this seems to do the trick! These are 'filling' too, which is a big plus. I will also buy "Cliff" bars and these a really filling, however I've been told that they are an aquired taste... I have also brought in some frozen, personal sized Quiches - these are really good too. Since you have a toaster, you could bring frozen waffles with you. I keep a small jar of peanut butter in my cabinet, and I will put that on the waffles, and I can also bring in crackers to spread on for a snack, or celery sticks etc. I don't have all of this stocked...but I interchange just to get some variety. Ok, it's 2:03 am Christmas morning....and I am thinking about breakfast! Merry Christmas!!! |
I like cold pizza...
Oh...you want healthy food? Cant help you there, healthy breakfast foods and I have never met. |
Nope, no ideas from my corner. I'm not a brekkie gal. In fact, can't eat before midday.

Breakfast
Actually made an Apple pie on Christmas Eve.......think I'll cut into it for breakfast this morning:p Apples are good for you, right? MMMMMM
|
Today for breakfast was my DD's Bisquik Sausage balls....and she left me some for tomorrow. Yummmmmmmmy. :p

Fruit and yogurt is good, and not too breakfast-y. Takes no time to fix.
Personally, I enjoy a bowl of oatmeal. You don't have to buy the microwave variety. Just pop 2/3 c oatmeal in the microwave w/ 1/3 c water, a handful of raisins (they provide all the sweetness you need) and some cinnamon. Takes only a minute. But, if you don't like breakfast food, maybe not ... Or, last night's supper leftovers. I tend to like to get into "ruts" and have the same thing every day, because then I don't have to decide in the morning. ~ Faith |
