Has texting entirely taken the place of a nice voice to voice conversation, now?
I just got off the phone biotching with a friend about this and she completely understood and agreed that texting on these itsy machines is abuse of the older and/or feebler.:D My DD and Family don't answer their land line anymore and they just texy with everyone on their cells. DD answers her cell, if I'm lucky enough, that, she has it on!! I love some of the changes that have happened....I finally got a microwave and a PC, without which, I could not survive, but texting is something I could do without, completely and forever and never miss it. I guess I'll have to get one with a BIG screen, with big buttons and big letters, now, just so I can join back into the human race. I sure can't text on this itsy piece of crap I have (which DD got me, BTW). Am I the only arcaic holdout on this tiresome, crude and rude change in communication? I Hate It!!!!! |
Get a phone with a slide out keyboard. :D
I like texting because I can send a text and get a reply without staying on the phone forever. I still talk but not so much anymore. I get more done too! :p Now my mom? Forgetaboutit. I have to call because she can't even find the answer button. I kid you not, the other day she called my sister's house phone thinking it was her cell phone and left a message. She even heard herself and thought she was hearing herself in the phone. Sally, she lives with my sister. LOL |
Hate the thumbtalkers! I just put a block on my phone, no thumbtalkers allowed. I especially hate them when driving on MY roads. I'm on the verge of vigilanteism.
|
I joke with my DD that she needs to become a doctor so she can treat all the people who will end up with Thumbinitis in the future! :p
My sister sits in the same room as her son and they text one another instead of talking like normal people. I had my DD teach me how to text on my new phone because I've come to realize I need to accept the fact that I will have no choice but to text. The good thing is if DD is in school and DH is at work I can just text a quick message and they can check it and respond when they can. |
Sally,
If you get the Droid by Motorola on Verizon Wireless you not only have a slide out keyboard but you can send text messages by voice. :) I wish you lived nearby and I'd get you all set up with just the right phone and purty accessories too. ;) |
I'm of the "no-text" nation.
I won't text back if someone texts me. I call them when it is convenient for me and let them know I will NEVER answer a text. I delete them when I find them on my phone, without reading them. I've lived my whole life without texting and I am sure I will be just fine without it. I have enough to deal with. Call me and come and see me if you like, leave a message at my home number and I promise I'll get back to you in a timely fashion, but don't text me. |
Now I know why I love you River..:D
I just about told my DD that and also, that if she and her DH choose not to take my calls on their landline, that I just may not answer her "Mommy, I need you" calls. hurumph!!!! |
I'm one up on ya, Sal. I don't even own a cellphone. No way do I wanna be that connected at all times. It would drive me nuts. Wiz, why would anyone need text w/voice? Isn't that just voicemail? LOL
|
And I'd even get my amazing Amazonian river rafting friend into a Droid, lol.
And voice to text just takes your voice, turns it into text and sends it as a text message. :) And I didn't even have a smart phone last year, lol, but I could sell you the top of the line smart phone and get it set up so it would be no trouble for you to operate. |
I never thought I'd see the day I said this but I truly don't like all this new technology.
I don't text. Never have and never will. Both of my sons do. And they're so fast! I told them both they were going to get carpal tunnel if they kept it up. How on earth do people type with their thumbs like that??? I can barely see the keyboard let alone be able to even type with one finger! I receive text messages on my cell phone and, like River, they get deleted without even being read. Everyone who knows me knows this and I've made it perfectly clear that anything important should be conveyed to me via a phone call. I remember when the pager became popular. And we thought that was futuristic! Compared to what we have today it was like sending smoke signals! :o |
HA HA I had a pager. And I will admit I am a texting addict. Between DH2B and I we only have 300 minutes a month on our plan. *because we have the 10 favs and free to verizon customers and unlimited texting plan. I like texting because DH2B has a tendency to listen to my end of the convo when I am on the phone. Then I have to fill him in on the other side of the convo.
For example... "how does a conversation about DD's health insurance change turn into a 10 min debate about how to properly cook a crab with your ex?" or "why does your mom want the recipe for *** you know she can't cook" then there is a play by play. PLUS.... I can send a text message and get a response and not have to be on the phone for half an hour with people I really didn't want to talk to in the first place...like DD's dad. My mom and I text each other all day. This means she only calls me two or three times a day as opposed to the every hour on the hour checking in she was doing before she discovered the joys of text messaging. LOL |
My DIL doesn't call me very often, but she will text occasionally. I'm just glad that we communicate.
Also, if I'm at work, a text is easier and quicker to respond to than a phone conversation. Or I can choose to answer during a break. I was glad for texting a couple of days ago, because the person I was trying to reach was "on the road" and I couldn't hear him. So I texted that we had a house available for rent and told him my name so he could call me back later. His wife called yesterday morning and we have renters! :) (Well, as soon as we get the thing painted and cleaned out.) I embrace new technology. I don't buy every new thing that comes out, but I love that "we" as human beings, keep topping ourselves with new creations. Yet I inwardly shake my head at people who stand in lines in freezing weather to be the first to have one! Uhhh, Polar, you still in hibernation mode? ;) Ooops! I forgot my own rule: Don't poke the Bear!!! |
I mentioned the Droid to DD and she say that I don't need one that tecky. All I need is a larger text screen. I said that I like the idea of voice to text and she said hmmmmm.
I got a real talking to about getting with the times and if I stayed in the dark ages then, I'd miss out on things. A lot of business are going to be texting...Yikes, I'm not ready for that. I still don't like it and ill only use it when necessary.. |
I have a pay as you go cell phone from tracfone.
I don't use it enough to justify spending money on a plan. I only turn it on when I am making a call, I shut it off when I am done unless I am traveling. I ignore phone calls that might sneak through unless I know the number. I know land lines are considered old school but my landline rotary dial ten pound phones keeps me connected enough for my needs and they're lethal weapons if need be! I chose the tracfone because it works all over my state, unlike other companies who only cover certain areas. I swear I am becoming my father! He avoided new technology, said he lived without it all his life and he wasn't going to need it, and he didn't. I have enough trouble keeping my stupid television working!! |

I enjoy new technology, really I do. I just pick and choose what I need. If I were still traveling 40 miles a day to work & back on county roads, I'd keep a cell in the car (I did for a while). As for the rest, guess this old bear likes to keep things simple...and slow (except for mail ~ I have no patience for the postal service ). |

For heaven's sake, how many different ways to we need to communicate? I don't want a smart phone, there is absolutely nothing in anyone's life that can't be communicated better than plain old spoken words. If there is "no time for a call..." whatever it is is obviously not too important. Besides, the data plans are so ridiculously expensive, it's an insult to my reality check. |
I wasn't crazy about texting, but I have slurred speech now and DD and DS (both 18) are into texting and using it we communicate more than by phone. Also I can leave a message when phone is turned off in school. They answer texts better and fasterthan phone messages.
|
My store manager uses me as an example for those who swear they would never use a smart phone. I was one of those stubborn customers who wouldn't even have a text plan or more than the minimum of minutes, until I got my job and I learned all that smart phones can really do. Now I compare my smart phone use to my switch from dial up internet service. I will never go back to that. :lookaround:
Now my plan is to get the rest of my age group into my frame of mind as far as smart phones are concerned. :o |
I LOVE my smartphone too! It really is smart! hahaha
|
Lord knows, we could all use a "smart phone":D It better be smarter than I am, and faster, too.:p
|
I have never sent a text and usually resent people who send them to me since I have to pay for them, TracFone. But on my trip to Fiji my friend was using her iPhone, even with long nails she can quickly type on it. It doesn't have little buttons and when you hit one it shows quite large. ATT was the only US carrier to work in Fiji, text cheap voice expensive. From this maybe some day.:)

I love my Tracphone!!!! I only use it when I want to, very few people know my number and they know to call me at home. I want my minutes to last the full year. I must admit I did text my DD one time when I knew she was at the movies and I know she is one of those people that automatically put her phone on vibrate when she enters a resuant or movie. It took me forever to taext a few words thoug and I tried to use those quirky abbreviations! I have gotten my DH to take it out with him when he does his Karoake. You never know when I might need him. We both have elderly sick Moms plus he knows that something can happen to me.
Oh, one good thing a cell phone does. It is a wonderful alarm clock! Both my girls and thier husbands have cell phones that do everything but bake a cake. My 3 year old grandaughter knows how to call out. But I'll keep my Trachpone. I did upgrade to one that takes pictures. But I can only send them to another cell phone and not a computer. |
I never even had a cell phone until I split with the ex last year, lol then it was time to try something new! I text, carry the cell phone around when I feel like it but still prefer face to face or the phone.
JMHO? some people couldn`t type an intelligent reply, hold an intelligent conversation prior to texting, nothing can help them. |
I'm with you, Sally. I've been glad I got a microwave and a PC but can do without the other gadgets coming down the pike.
I do have a cellphone but got it only a few years ago, and it's a Tracfone. I use it only to make calls if I'm in transit somewhere and have no access to any other phone. I can't hear well on cellphones. They're not user-friendly for people whose hearing isn't good. (I use hearing aids.) Most of these gadgets are costly--AND they're costly to repair or replace. I try to get along with as few of them as I can.:) |
