Made a mistake, but wow I am not sure how to keep from making it again.

I got lucky I didn't do this for more days than maybe two. I'm just
not sure how long I've been making this mistake. I know I replaced
the gabapentin medicine that was out on Wednesday night or Thursday
morning but not sure which.

I made the mistake of not double checking I guess which bottle I had.
I forgot that I had a extra bottle of medformin. And the two pills look
alike. But the really big problem is, I seem to have two different
manufacturers of medformin and didn't know this.
Ugh, so I've until last night, when I just luckily looked down at the
bottle. And didn't make the mistake of taking extra was taking
extra medformin.

But one of the biggest problems is that I seem to have been taking it
in the mornings too.

I am okay this morning. And got through last night, by making sure
I had extra sugar in my system. I had thought it odd the night
before that I needed M & M's or other candy.

And the night before that too, now I know why. I've always done what
my body told me too. So wow, but I'm lost as to how to make sure
I don't do this again.

I also am not sure what the signs of overdose would have been. But
my meter needs new unexpired strips.

I need to call my doctor, I had asked for them. But they never got
ordered. Now its a have too. Last night I found out what happens
when they expire. Luckily it wasn't life and death. I was just
going to double check it.

Metformin does not usually cause low blood sugars that are serious.

You should however be testing daily ANYWAY more than once, for safety's sake.

Dmom3005 02-05-2012 11:51 AM

Yes Mrs. D I know that. I need the strips back.

I have lost my last order. I did request new ones. But for some
reason my doctor didn't place the order. And I forgot to remind
him.

My bad, but I'll correct that tomorrow.

I think the biggest problem was it made me feel really bad.

I am glad that you caught it when you did.
don't be too hard on your self...mistakes happen just pay closer attention.
just reminded me that I need to take my meds....

mrsD 02-05-2012 12:39 PM

I'd suggest getting a red permanent marker and putting a BIG RED M on the cap of the metformin. That may help. Big enough
you won't need glasses to see it.

Dmom3005 02-05-2012 07:06 PM

Uh, not sure I can make it big enough not to need glasses.

But like that idea.

I'm technically seem to be blind without my glasses from a distance.

I'm near sighted, so I can't see things far away. And its honestly hard
to see things like that.

But I don't take meds without my glasses on.

Abbie 02-05-2012 11:15 PM

I have taken different colored sharpies and color coded some of my medicines that look alike. (I kept mixing up my Seroquel and my Baclofen...not a good thing to do.)

I just color the whole cap whatever color it should be for the medicine.

Then on a piece of paper I write what the color is and what medicine is inside.

Then when I refill them I just look at the paper and color the cap... no more problems.

Maybe this will help for you..??

Mari 02-06-2012 01:21 AM

Hi.

Before I take my meds, I line them up on a clean paper towel from lightest color to darkest. I leave them for a few minutes and return to check again that I am taking the right ones before I swallow them.

Then I take them in order by color. It is the best system for me. (Every time I have bought a pill minder, I ignored it until I through it away or gave it to someone else.)

With 38 pills per day, every 6, 8, 12,24 hrs a system is needed!
What works for me:
Med tops have a abreviated (few letters) written
I set out 5-7 empty bottles in front of me ( one for each day )and systematically add each med quantity, to bottles, moving meds from one location to another to make sure to get them all. This includes the supplements. Then I place the lids on that say 24 hrs meds. It saves time. Then I have a daily spiral of med reminder(2) that gets filled from one of the 24hr med container. I use a visual clock rotation on a clean washcloth, and place each med to its clock position to complete the day and move them into the spiral container. Example 5am, 7am, 11am, noon, 3 pm, 5pm, 11 pm and midnight. I also take a photo of the meds and their position, when anything changes.
Any change in color, sz, when the manufacture changes is noted. It happens alot with generics. These meds are for my daughter, she is notified when a med looks different. There are just too many meds to open up for each time frame or for every day. Dealing them out to the clock system is like dealing cards, so each med is familiar, as their dose, frequency. Needed refills are noted at least a week ahead of time, so when the pharmacy runs out I know how many days are remaining before it is a problem. I also try to order at 28 days, to keep more supply stock. As for med reminder, we use the multiple alarm system on the iPhone to remind her. She has been sick for 4years now. I make sure I am not too tired to pay attention to setting out the meds, since there's so many of them. She is alert enough to know what, why, and when she is taking the meds.
So meds are never forgotten. Hope this helps :)

Hope this helps...

Dear Donna,
The pharmacies near me will hand out four or five strips I believe. Check with your pharmacy.

Dmom3005 02-06-2012 11:06 AM

Thanks everyone

I'm fine today, technically was yesterday too.

Once I caught what was going on. It was like I had the flu or something.

Which was what I had thought was wrong in the first place. So hadn't
thought much of the problems I was having.

I hadn't thought being sweaty and hot was a sign because I'm always
hot now. But it probably was. And it was lots worse than usual.

And the sweaty isn't usually normal exactly, and especially to the amount
I had. So I'm just glad its pretty much over.

I just am glad it was a easy solve. I bought a back up meter.
Because they have extra strips. That way I can also get more strips.

From pharmacy in the time frame from doctor.

There wasn't a way at the time I figured it out.

I was knowledged that the ER was a option, but didn't want to have
to do that.

Donna:grouphug::hug:

Mari 02-07-2012 05:37 AM

Dear Donna,
Buying a new meter was a good idea. My girlfriend has bought new meters when she runs out of extra strips.

Keep taking care of yourself. You are important.

Dear Donna,

i hope you figure out a medicine dispensing system that works for you, so you can avoid mixing them up again. it is hard having a lot of meds to take.

i use a 7-day pillminder to help me make sure i've taken all my meds each day. it has a compartment for each day, but since all the pills for any one day are together, it would not help you where 2 pills look alike.

i am glad you are ok.

Dmom3005 02-07-2012 11:20 AM

Right now my medicines are okay. I have to get the markers to mark
the bottles.

But I have a new clue on the gabapentin that I hadn't realized.

They can be split easily in two. So I will know now if I have two different
kinds of medformin. Because they can't be split.

Today no fog but the weather created a headache, so I'm resting.

Donna:grouphug::hug:

Dmom3005 02-09-2012 11:29 PM

Well have had new problems.

1. Had weather changes which caused me to need to take tylenol
for headaches. This is never fun but oh well.

Two days worth, but life.

2. We got paperwork for some reason about cobra today. We don't
know if we are losing insurance thanks to the time period
that husband didn't work in the one week. And because of holidays.

Ugh, I'm worried, but I'll make it.

Little different subject on this thread.

But since you check it I'm asking for some prayers.

For one of my families. They had some problems at home last
night. Thanks to the school. They bravely told the school today.

And after the mental health individuals that talk to the young
man talk to him. A decision will be made as to whether they
should call cps.

I don't know what the decision will be. But I find this interesting.

Because mom has asked for over a week to move the meeting
up. And they just didn't have time.

Wow. Now it has caused other problems.

Donna:grouphug::hug:

Dmom3005 02-10-2012 08:25 PM

I went to a case conference to mainly be support for one of my
Parent Support Volunteers. The Asst Director of special ed.
And the principal had attacked the guardian's last time.

They had a meeting with the director and her on Monday. And
there was a shouting match between the two.

Wasn't sure what would happen. Didn't exactly expect the nicest
people back for me today. I believe the Director and asst had a discussion
after guardians(grandparents) left on Monday. And the principal doesn't
like to make a situation like that with me there.

So other than the psychologist that is the TOR, made a break when she
needed to take one for a few minutes to pick up a re-evaluation papers.

And its interesting how nice the meeting went.

Now to see how the IEP looks when we get it. And if they left it the
way it was written. And didn't make changes. They read it to Grandparents
and me.

Asking for some thoughts and prayers:

I am getting ready to make a doctor appt. I have a yeast problem always
or once a month I guess it is. Under my breast. And this month, I have
found a area that might be a lump.

So I need to make a doctor's appt. But I don't want to. Ugh.

So keep me in your thoughts. So I will make this appt. I know I
need a mammogram either way. I'm overdue.

PS. I got good news tonight, Dale is going to pay the Cobra amount
without even blinking for this next month. Because we believe it
will be the only month its needed. This is good to me.

Dmom3005 02-12-2012 06:41 PM

Heehee Mayo

I will tomorrow, if I can get the doctor's office. Today is Sunday,
they aren't open.

I have to make Derrick a Dentist appt. It technically is a emergency
so it is more important. But its not a excuse, because they aren't
open till 1pm tomorrow.

But I am going with my other daughter-in-law to a lawyer's office
in the morning. But I will make that appt before, if they are answering
the phones.

Donna:grouphug::hug:

Dmom3005 02-13-2012 10:24 AM

One appt down, One waiting till tomorrow

I made a doctor's appt. For tomorrow at 10:45. I chose to wait to
make the mammogram appt after, only because there are two kinds
of mammograms. And the very first time I had one. I got a scare
so I'd rather, just have one if possible.

The first time I had to wait over a week to have the second, and
then I had to also have a needle Biopsy I think it was called. Everything
was fine, but it still left a scare on me.

Its not why I didnt' schedule the test, I just wanted to wait a month
till school was out. And things happened. I wont do that again. Next
time.

This time doesn't count. I'm waiting to see which mammogram she
thinks I should have. Because I would rather not go through it again.
If necessary. The wait caused so much anxious moments for my
other issues.

So I will just wait that long, and then call, or they will. Not honestly
sure. I have the number to call. But also know she will give me a card.
So I can call as I leave. Which I plan to do.

Donna:grouphug::hug:

bizi 02-13-2012 11:37 AM

Dmom3005 02-13-2012 01:17 PM

Okay second problem of day down.

Derrick has a dentist appt, to at least see what we do.

I realize if he has a infection they can't do anything today.

I haven't warned him it might not be today. But hoping they
can at least give a stronger pain medicine. Even though
the tylenol is helping. Not sure how long it will.

And I don't think by itself he will sleep at night on it.

The oragel is helping the whole thing. So we will keep that
too.

Donna:grouphug::hug:
