Cardinal Pitcher getting TOS surgery
Interesting article because he only has NTOS. Usually the Pitchers have ATOS.
He is going to Dr. Pearl in Dallas, who I have heard of recently. It mentions that he will be getting his first rib removed and 2 neck muscles removed which must be his scalenes. They say he will be able to pitch again next season. It will be interesting to watch what happens to a public figure. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb This article is more detailed and says "release" of the scalene muscles: http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseb...9bb30f31a.html |
A good friend of mine has a son on the Cardinals, so I'm going to forward this to her, thanks! :)

3 to 6 mo reccovery time. they must be glossing over the fact that there are two surgeries

We have posts/threads here about Hank Blalock, former texas ranger ball player that had TOS surgery. If I recall he was a top hitter for the rangers before the injury.
He played again afterward but was plagued with other misc injuries and was traded a couple of times then free agent.. Google still brings up his injury & history. |

Carpenter was first shut down with what was described as a nerve-related issue in March, when he began feeling weakness and numbness in his arm, shoulder and face following his throwing sessions.
Dumbness in the face? But, but, that isn't a TOS symptom. |
One of the symptoms I had post-surgery was Bell's Palsy. I've had it before during one pregnancy, and then various episodes of weirdness from cranial nerve regeneration. I mentioned that I have this thing called "Eagle Syndrome" which means my mastoid process is elongated, presumably in the cranial nerve area. I wish there were a way to know if this is related to TOS, which I'm now have no symptoms of.

Does anybody wonder why he isn't using Dr.Thompson since both are located in the St. Louis area?

Carpenter surgery/Dr. Pearl

Yes i was wondering why he didnt use Thompson as well. Maybe he has family in Texas, or his trainers know Dr. Pearl or maybe Thompsons schedule wasn't open when he wanted the surgery. Has anyone seen Dr. Pearl. Info? |
I don't know him yet, but I'm seeing him Tuesday. I can post the 411 once I do, though!

I met with Dr. Pearl today for a presurgery appointment (surgery tomorrow; wish me luck!). He was very friendly and personable, listened to what I said, addressed my concerns and seems very confident about the procedure tomorrow. It was so nice to FINALLY get to talk to a doctor who knows what he is talking about and didn't talk down to me as a patient.
He is very optimistic about recovery time and return to full use of the affected side of the body. Naturally, we will know more after the surgery actually happens, since a lot depends on what they actually find once they open me up, but the plan currently is to remove the cervie rib, the first rib and at least the anterior scalene (right side). And, when my sister (a big Cardinals fan) hinted that she wondered how Carpenter was doing, he said that Chris is doing great and he expects he'll be pitching wonderfully again after recovery. I will keep you guys posted on how I feel about him post-op! LOL. |
Good luck tomorrow!

Best wishes, hope all goes great.

Good wishes to you both!
JKL Keep us posted on your recovery. |
Wow

Sounds like he's doing pretty good. Athletes have an advantage because there already in good shape, and they tend to get diagnosed earlier, before their body deteriorates too much. It makes rehab faster. Plus, they usually have topnotch doctors and trainers and a good work ethic.
I thought Peyton Manning was down for the count after all his neck issues, but he looked pretty darn good against the Niners the other day. |
Chris Carpenter pitched today-5 innings!
Pretty funny article-read down to the description of the surgery

dr. pearl - surgery in dec
losinghope: how did you do? I am in Houston and heard not so great things about Azzizadeh, so decided to make an appointment with Dr. Pearl. How is your recovery going?
Also, has anyone tried lifting weights? how long after the surgery? Oh, I miss it so, but haven't been able to since 2008. |
Hi! I'm doing pretty well; if you'd like details on my recovery, I've posted details under the Chris Carpenter - St Louis Pitcher MLB thread. I think Dr. Pearl is great, and I definitely recommend him.
