Best bed to buy for CRPS?

Mine is in my feet mostly. I'm working on getting a pain pump. We need a new bed and I finally can get one (my medical malpractice suit finally settled). We have a basic mattress right now, with springs. I sat on a few the other day, but didn't really spend time in there as DH was only getting coffee next door to the store, and the salesguy was creepy.

There were a few I felt I couldn't get out of on bad days. I know when I get the pump I'll have to kind of roll out of bed for a while (I assume). I think I need to stay with the spring kind and a pillow top. Do any of you have any good or bad experiences with memory foam or latex? I'm not sure if it would be good for my body or not. I am a side sleeper, DH on his back.

I'm going to go out to this company and look at their beds:

They're chemical free, which I think it a really good thing to use with the CRPS. There are a few other places that sell mattresses that don't have so many chemicals, but this place is close-ish and not a horrible price for what it is.

I'm stopping by Ikea this weekend, their mattress doesn't have the big bad chemical, but still has some.

Getting a sheet set is going to be just as bad of an issue, trying to find something that is soft and that I like.

Hi

My bed isn't from that company but I have the sleep number bed and it's the only one I can lay on. Well, I have back problems to but who doesn't want to be extremely comfortable. I spend every minute of the day on it. Love it!!

Hi Chaos

I have a cooling gel mattress. Never get too warm or cold for that matter. It is like Tempur pedic, but an off brand. Went to Amazon.com of all things. Price was very reasonable too. Best choice for me. Maybe try one out. ginnie:D

I have to apologise massively in advance, because this just came to mind and I just want to share my small, wry smile with you.... I was sitting here yawning away because I'm so tired, and I saw the thread title....

...and I thought...

One that has been sprinkled with chloroform.

Sorry, but some nights that is what I long for  Not in a dangerous way obviously, but in that Agatha Christie-esque kind of way where a glamorously dressed young chap or gal needs to be rendered unconscious for a short time...(they always made it look gentle and kindly ;))

Anyway, hope I haven't offended anyone in the middle of this useful discussion.

Bram (very tired and off to bed).

Bram! You are so baaaaaad! You might want to stick to lavender aromatherapy ;-)

Lottie 12-13-2013 07:22 PM

I love my Temperpedic "Cloud" very much. I have serious spine issues and it has been great for me. The only down side is that it can make you too warm, so if that is a big issue for you it might not be the best choice. I bought mine about 4 years ago so maybe they have better choices available now that don't make the person so warm. Good luck!

Yeah, I don't want one that makes me sweat, I have had issues with that for about a year now.

Bram - yeah, I like your idea. If only knocked out sleep actually gave me good sleep.

I have an adjustable bed (head and/or feet rise with a remote) . It is a memory foam mattress with gel. Have never been hot or cold on it. I have a waterproof mattress topper on it too. I like it. I think it is a simmons brand. My mattress if firm you do not sink into it . States its very comparable to Tempur Pedic. 1/2 the cost. Today was my worse day of pain with RSD after evaluation for ending my occ. therapy (possibly). I think from all the squeezing to determine the strength in each hand, finger, ect. RSD started after carpel tunnel surgery on right but pain is running up my right arm across my upper back and down my left arm. My chest and neck also feel strange. Not a good sign for things to come since I have only had it 2 1/2 months. I have not had the pain YET that some people have to determine if it is a good bed for that but love to be able to raise bed to watch tv or the feet to take stress off my back. I am sure after today I will find out.

Being unconscious for a short time sounds good to me.

I LOVE my Pure Latex Bliss Beautiful mattress. I also have a Pure Latex Bliss topper.

I bought it from Sleep City in San Rafael about this time last year. I went in and they had a floor model they were clearing out, so I negotiated them to ~1900 or 2000, including the topper. Amazing deal, as these beds are usually many more thousands of dollars.

I freaking love my bed. Doesn't get as hot as other beds. Very cooling. Very soft, supportive, cushy... I just LOVE it.

Latex is great (talaylay especially) because it doesn't compress over time, so the beds are a great investment. I looked at mattresses at the Natural Mattress store as well, and liked them well enough. But my PLB Beautiful is better (for me). And it doesn't have the wool, and other stuff in it, which means - like I said earlier - it will last longer.

My sister liked it so much that she bought the floor model at the other store in Northern California. Hilarious!

Sleep City included free delivery and in general I really liked working with them.

Remember to negotiate! (wherever you buy)

Oh, and this is a great resource for buying a bed! http://www.themattressunderground.com/

Phoenix has a discussion board and she answers questions super well. It's how I learned about latex myself.

I went to the Natural Mattress store in San Rafael this weekend. Man, I just wanted to fall asleep right there in their store. I told the guy what I wanted and he showed me the right bed in the first example. I laid on a bunch of other beds but I think I found what I want. NOT the full latex or foam ones, I need springs with a latex topper. Totally organic. They had a wool topper to go on top of it to keep sweat out of it. Their super nice pillow was made of latex tubes and some sprouted seed thing. I wouldn't be able to wash it. So more down pillows for me.

Sat on some of the beds at Ikea and the difference was huge. I'm still going to look at some other places just to make sure we're getting the right one.

Funniest part was when I was telling my mom about them, she said "there are chemicals in mattresses?". Um, yeah, tons and tons.

I like a good warm form fitting waterbed, yes they do still make them. When it is cold I turn up the temp and that feels so good on pain filled areas. when it is warm I turn it down and that helps with the sweating. I find other types of beds too hard in certain areas where a waterbed forms to my body in a way other beds don't...
