Magnesium Oxide Supp?

I have been having a lot of muscle cramps and am always constipated. Anyhow I take magnesium oxide supplement. I take a seperate calcium with d. Anyhow I was taking only 1 250mg magnesium supp but today cause so constipated took 2 and that was for total 500mg is that too much daily?

mrsD 07-06-2007 05:50 AM

Magnesium oxide does NOT work

for systemic issues. If you want to increase magnesium, foods, and other supplements should be tried.

If all you want is a laxative action, then continue with the oxide. But it is next to useless systemically.

Slow-Mag contains Magnesium that is much more easily absorbed. It can be a tad expensive: WalMart----> 9.88 for a bottle of 60 and it does include calcium. Dose according to the bottle is two tablets once a day with food.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't bump my dose up. Any help, MrsD or anyone else familiar with Magnesium?

Calcium - 212mg
Magnesium - 128mg
Chloride - 373mg

Daniella, for the constipation, try sipping hot water like you would when drinking tea or coffee, it could work after only one cup but if it doesn't have a couple more.

The strengths you post Jarrett are for 2 tablets. The general guideline is for people to take up to 1/2 the RDA in a supplement...this assumes you are getting some from food. Since the RDA for adults is about 400mg that would be 200 if you think you really need it. I always suggest people start at one tablet of Slow Mag twice a day in divided doses, since there is active transport in the intestine and you don't want to overload it at one time.
I was just at Costco getting my jinxed blood pressure RX filled and they had generic slow-mag (Mag64) for $4.87 /60....that is 2 dollars less than WalMart where I usually get it.
I use the generic typically to save $$.

If you feel good at 2 a day, then that is all you need. I wouldn't go over 4 a day however. Using high dose magnesium should be monitored by a doctor, esp if you have any decreased kidney functions.

Thank you. I had read that post and guess I'm a little slow. I thought magnesium helps with muscle tightness so it would help with the cramps I get in my neck and other areas. I would also love to get my bowel issues under control and have discussed the severe constipation. Trust me we have tried everything. In the hospital they had to give me enemas to go. The body is so screwed up from years of the ed still though healthy weight. I guess it takes time. So the slow mag is the best for what I'm wanting it for? The initial dose is 2 and is there different amounts in the pills?Mrs D what benefits should you see so you know if you feel good or not to take more? Why do people take the kind I bought then?

mrsD 07-06-2007 02:15 PM

magnesium oxide..

was the first form ever made. It is typically still in many therapeutic medical
textbooks.

It has only been recently that bioavailability studies comparing how much is actually ABSORBED from a magnesium tablet, that the truth was discovered that Magnesium Oxide remains in the GI tract.

Slow Mag is only one way to improve absorption. This product was designed years ago BTW, to treat magnesium deficiencies. It was developed by the Searle drug company. The patent was just purchased by Purdue labs.

I have this information with links explaining all the types on the Vitamin forum.
You really need to read it...to see why choosing a chelated type or delayed acting type is best.

When you have cramping muscles or other symptoms, and they go away rapidly on a dose you are taking, then you know it is working. I can feel that within a day! The links I have spent alot of time finding and sharing here are very interesting. Vision, hearing, seizures, ADHD, muscle issues, grinding teeth at night, diabetes, etc are all in my thread.

Have you tried sipping hot water ?
When i had my hip replacement done, there was a guy in my ward that had severe constipation, i seen him vomiting and he told me that he had not used his bowels in 4 or 5 days, the hospital had given him all different med's to make his bowel work but nothing had worked, he said they were going to do an enema on him next which he wasn't to pleased about, so i told him about sipping hot water and he said he had never heard of it but was willing try anything, so he had one cup that night, in the morning he still hadn't gone so i said try another which he did, within an hour it worked, he couldn't thank me enough, oh boy, i was sorry i told him, i shot out the room on my crutches :D and come back when the coast was clear.
oh yeah, the supplement slippery elm helps as well.
good luck
Brian

Thank you. I will reread. I know things are always being improved. Today and yesterday I took my original magnesium oxide today only the 1 250 though and on empty stomach. I don't know if fluke but went potty. The thing is it made my stomach burn and raw. I'm going to switch to the one your talking about but will it also help with the potty issue or more for absorbing. I want both. Is it bad though I took it on empty stomach? Brian I will try the water sipping. Is it diff then coffee in its effect? That story of you on crutches made me laugh cause my roomies when I got an enema on lets just say after longer then your friend of no bm thats how they felt.OY and did I need a laugh. Thank you

I only know it works with hot water from the electric jug, just hot enough so you can sip it i mean, Billye said it worked for her with coffee or tea i can't remember which one right now, she was told it stimulates some nerve.
Some of my family members have the same problem at times and they use the hot water trick too, i hope it helps.

daniella 07-07-2007 11:49 AM

Thank you. I thought the coffee was because of the caffeine? I will try the hot water. Is an electric jug like a tea kettle? I see your from Australia? That must be neat. Ever come to the states? I used to hate traveling but now want to.

Silverlady 07-07-2007 12:30 PM

Answer to Brian

Mayo's GI doctor told me that any HOT drink would do it. I use tea and it's the first thing I consume in the morning. It stimulates the vagus nerve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vagus_nerve The vagus nerve stimulates the peristalsis (as I understand it). Peristalsis is the movement of the bowel that the body does automatically. And then, make time to spend in the bathroom. Make it a regular habit. I find that if anything interrupts this "schedule", it will cause a problem. But I just make time for it as often as is possible. And sometimes later in the day if I've had to miss the morning window of opportunity, I can have an afternoon cup of hot tea and still stimulate things to work.

Since the periodontist told me that I have an infection in my jaw bone around the old dental implants that I have, and that all the Ibuprofen I was taking was weakening my jaw bone, I stopped taking the Ibuprofen, started taking Serrapeptase instead... it helps, but is not as total or quick as Ibuprofen.

And, I started taking 250mg of magnesium 4 to 8 times a day. (I've tapered off now to 3 or 4 times a day.)

Several months later I am sleeping much better, seldom have any cramps, (except for a worrying cramping feeling in my chin...) and have less of a loose teeth problem.

:)

shiney sue 07-07-2007 07:13 PM

Oh dear

I thought you said soup not Supp. Never mind, those cramps hurt D
and i never know when one is going to hit, they can be dangererous
for someone who is in the way if it's you leg,or hand with a knief
in it. They really hurt but mine has been slowing down or i am.
Drink something warm for your tummy. It's Sat isn't it??? Sue

If i ever win the lotto  the first place i would head to is the states, i would love to see New York, Las Vegas, Texas, and many more places in your country, one day never know :)
all the best

Thanks Billye, i was hoping you would chime in and explain it, just curious though, do you have your tea without the milk ? just thinking it may cool it down, depending on the amount of milk i suppose, some of my friends pour a huge amount of milk in there tea, ruins it i think, but each to their own.

Daniella - everyone is right....

but for you it may take some fine tuning? Trial and error is the rule here as each of us face the issue for a whole slew of reasons that no doc could ever determine or know [nor can we]....
I seem to recall on other neuropathy boards, and also on Cancer boards about a variety of 'recipies' that help... While I have been 'blocked' for extended periods of time [once, very big time with my PN onset - 3-1/2 weeks {no kidding!} and others due to surgeries...the anti-'b's and percocet there] well, I simply drank more water, ate soft stuff and refused to try to worry and strain about it! I will say that walking around in short careful spurts helped as well-guess it got things moving? Also helped my overall circulation-which probably helps as well.

Some of the recipies consisted of prune paste and other flax seed or flax oil to help things along.... Do all the good things to take your mind off the bad...you can amaze yourself when you are distracted. :winky: - j

Silverlady 07-07-2007 09:31 PM

Nope, drink it straight!

Got your attention there didn't I? :) Brian, I drink my tea straight, no milk or cream, a little sugar, but just as hot as I can drink it. With the arrival of the microwave, I've quit boiling water and putting it in a teapot. I simply put a microwave mug in the microwave and heat my tea for 1 min. 55 seconds, then take it out immediately and put the teabag in. Then stir in my teaspoon of sugar and steep the teabag while I put my oatmeal in the microwave. Then I take my teabag out and drink it before I try to eat.

It didn't work at first when I got home from Mayo, but I've found that with time, and concious scheduling time, it works very regularly.

Right, that's for 2 tabs. From what you're saying 2 sounds like plenty enough for me. I had almost immediate results from the first dose. It seems to have stopped the RLS type symptoms I was having.

Unfortunately, there is no Costco anywhere near me. :( CVS is one place I haven't looked for a cheaper brand of the same ingredients as in the Slow-Mag. Of course, what I've seen with CVS is even their store and off brands are expensive compared to other places. We also have a Rite-aid. I'll check there as well.

Calcium doesn't seem to like me. Every time I try to take any kind of calcium it gives me terrible constipation. Maybe I'll try one dose of the Slow-Mag a day on an empty stomach.

My mom told me the same thing only a bit differently. She told me to get a glass of warm water, as warm as I could stand to drink comfortably straight down, and to do just that...drink it straight down. It works.

Yes you did spark up a thought or two :), you have it " on the rocks " as they say:D, we use the microwave a lot and use it for breakfast as well, instant porridge with half milk and half water, sprinkled with mixed dry fruit, comes up great.
all the best
