What's everyone doing for Thanksgiving?
What's everyone doing for Thanksgiving? Staying home, going away? Do you have a special tradition that you do, something that you always have for dinner that you would like to share with us?
I know it's a tough time of year for a couple of our members...and maybe talking about it will help get them through this. If not, I am sorry to dredge this up. I know when I lost my dad, getting through the holidays was a real hard time. It still is. I have memories of the things that we did together and they will always be in my heart and that keeps him alive in my heart. I love my dad very much and miss him every day, I now remember the good times we had and it makes getting through the tough times easier. We are going to spend Thanksgiving with some friends who have a cabin up near McCall, ID. Not sure how many people will be there, it just sort of evolves into a large group. She cooks a turkey the regular way, and we do one in the deep fat turkey cooker and it turns out wonderful. I also help her with dessert - Gingerbread Pumpkin Trifle. Last year for Christmas she gave me a real trifle bowl to serve it in instead of my waterford bowl that I've been serving it in! (she's afraid that someone will break the waterford!). We will go up Wednesday night and come back Saturday morning. Friday afternoon we will all gather at a neighbor's house to watch the last Boise State football game of the season - BSU vs. Hawaii. We are both undefeated in conference. It's in Hawaii....going to be a "real edge of the seat" game. What are you all doing? |
Thanksgiving
I will be going over to my daughter's house. There is only going to be about 5 of us this year. I seems each year it gets smaller. Years ago when the family was bigger, the guys would go out hunting in the morning and we would be home cooking like crazy. The afternoon was eating enjoying the talk and love that was there. Watch the football games on TV and more eating. The best time was when the great desserts started being served. We try to keep up the old traditions but with so many family gone and some live so far away now it is just not the same. This will be the second Thanksgiving without my husband and the wound is still so raw I really am not looking forward to the holidays like I used to. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE :grouphug:

We are driving back to FLA. on Tuesday to be with my husband's family. This will be the first time going back since we've moved up here, so I'm just a TAD excited to visit with family and friends that I miss so much. We don't have a holiday at all that is similar to Thanksgiving in the UK, so it really doesn't mean that much to me, except that there is an array of very colourful food on the table, and there seems to be a ton of what you Americans call "Football" games on all day. I still can't become accustomed to calling that thing you call a football, a football is round to me!
We'll probably do a bunch of visiting, and I heard that my old office is open on Friday, so I'm going to try and visit with my co-workers. Michael keeps mumbling about driving back on Saturday to avoid the traffic, so it may be a very shory stay. I've started to do some Christmas shopping already. My Mum and some other family members are coming over from England to spend Christmas in the states. We are thinking of taking them up to Asheville to see the Biltmore Hotel. Has anyone here ever been there before? I was just online looking at prices and they are quite steep. I'm hoping we can find something a tad cheaper, but still in the area of the hotel so we can enjoy many of the sights of Asheville. If you have any suggestions, PLEASE do let me know, I'd more than appreciate it. Have a lovely and safe holiday everyone. For those who have lost a loved one this year or who are having a rough go of it, please know I am thinking of you.:grouphug: All the best, Chris |
Well, this is going to be the best TG ever! No turkey, no mob, no excess food to live on for an entire week. One brother, one dad, one me. We're grilling buffalo tenderloin, some baked potatoes, salad, wine, pie and evening brandy. Easy peasy.
Chris, I've seen the Biltmore, it's a big, pretentious house with ostentatious treatments and inordinate ornamentation. Woo hoo. The gardens are nice in the summer but I don't know about fall. There is a lot in Asheville and the mansion is the least of it. All the little surrounding areas are very nice and much cheaper than in town. Hendersonville is close to the mansion, but it's much quieter. Have a great holiday, everyone! :) |
I'm not looking forward to the holidays either, Joyce. Seems like w/my parent's both gone now, there really isn't a "tradition" anymore. It will just be my DH, DS and me. But, that's OK.... I know I have alot to be thankful for. It's just gonna be extra hard w/o my Mom this yr.
I hope you all have a good one and that you get to spend it w/those you love. |

When DH was in the Navy, we never came home for Thanksgiving. He saved his leave for Christmas and hunting (with his family). It was fun to be the hostess for the squadron bachelors and/or anyone else who didn't go home. Sometimes we would have 5 people for Thanksgiving and sometimes we would have 15. We would never know. But we would have a great time. Most times, it would be the bachelors and their idea of cooking was stopping at the grocery store and picking up beer and chips! ;) That was fine with me. I loved cooking. I had so much fun making the whole meal for everyone. I actually miss it. I would spend the week getting ready for the whole day. Now, every year is different. No tradition, no nothing. I have favorite foods I like, but others don't care for them, so sometimes I just fix them for me. When he first retired from the Navy, the adjustment was tough. We were like fish out of water. We didn't know where we were going to live and we didn't have an instant family with the new company he went to work for...no comraderie at all. After 14 years of living here, we have friends, but it still isn't the same as when he was in the military. I don't like spending Thanksgiving with his family. They are too regimented...you do it this way, period. It's much more fun going to our friends' cabin and just winging it! I understand how you feel DM, and Chris. We all have a lot to be thankful for - our health, our friends, and some of you have great family to be thankful for. Cherish what you have. You never know what's around the next corner. Live each moment for what it has to offer. ;) Happy Thanksgiving everyone....I truly mean that. |
Thanks Cheryl~~ I know you understand how I feel. Thanks for sharing your story.
I won't go to DH's family T'giving as they are always nit picking and fighting amongst themselves. It makes me a nervous wreck and half of them aren't even showing up b/c they're fighting. They just don't get it! Life is too short to act like that... I don't know how my DH ever came out of that bunch.... He is the total opposite of them.... |
When is Thanksgiving?? This coming Thursday or next?
I have a lot for which to be thankful, a bunch of great memories of Thanksgivings past, but our tradition no longer exists. DD's Family has all had the Croop(sp) (coughing and breathing virus). Most of them are recooping from it now and DD's hubby has it...Poor guy ..and his Steelers lost today.:( No Plans. Just another day.:D HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! :grouphug: |
Thanksgiving
Well, I'm back with family this year, and it will be nice to have lots of people around. One of my sisters is cooking and she wants everyone to go to the movies together afterwards. We did that as kids and I'd rather stay home and nap.
I'm thankful to have a holiday and people to celebrate. The xbf didn't celebrate or acknowledge any holiday, but I cooked a big turkey for the two of us. No cooking for me. :D :grouphug: I'm thinking of all of you especially those who are dealing with a loss this year. Big hugs all around. :grouphug: I'm thankful for this awesome group, you all know how to make life more bearable. Thank You! |
We have family out of town but as long as the Mother, my Mom, of the group still lives here in town, I would imagine everone will still try to come 'home'. My youngest grandaughter turned 1 last week so we will have a party for her. My yougest daughters husband leaves in January for his second tour in Iraq so they will go to his folks for Thanksgiving. That will be a first, that I didn't have both my girls home with me. But we all undserstand why.
Our family dinners have completely changed the last couple of years. My Mom is 82, lots of helath problems. My sister is 60, lots of health problesm and I'm 57 with my health problems. So our kids are now doing the cooking! We still do some and Mom comes in the kitchen to 'supervise'. But it's mainly the kids. And we have a great bunch of son in laws or sons that insist on doing the cleaning up. So we buy the disposable containers so everyone can take stuff home and the guys just do all the cleaning. At Christmas time, this clean up time is when all the married women go into a closed bedroom and fill all the stockings. We make a big deal and do an official ceremony when a woman gets married and they get initiated into the 'Secret societry of the stocking stuffers'. All the grandkids coming up now are the guys, so I guess we will intiate their wives in it. The year my youngest got married she didn't want to do it 'cause her hubbie was in Iraq. |
ThanksGiving
Hi everyone!
I will be cooking dinner this year again, it is my favorite holiday. Since I got divorced many years ago, and I don't have family, and my son was little, I made sure to have a good dinner for us. Over the years I still made dinner and who ever was lonely, lost, or didn't have family, or whatever it is etc... they were welcome to come over to our house. The offer still stands. :) This year it will be my dear friend Anna and my son and myself, and ???? Then afterwards I will be resting. Sounds like a plan to me. Anna is bringing desert. I'll think up some good food that is easy to make. The turkey cooks itself...just about. WaLa, it's done. :o The only problem I see is the dreaded trip to the dreaded grocery store. :( But I need things I don't think my son will understand about...so...it's up to me. So my house will be smelling soooo goooooddddd!!! Everyone have a good week Geri |

When I rarely ask my PODH to go to the grocery store, most times he is totally clueless about a lot of things. I have learned to go online and find photographs of the items I want and print them out for him! At first he was insulted, but I honestly didn't care. :p It sure made my life a lot easier. I got the items I needed. I also learned that I could get a diagram of my local grocery store online and that way I could make my list according to the aisles in the store, therefore avoiding making him have to look for things all over the store! Just an idea... Have a great Thanksgiving! Sounds like fun! ;) |

Does anyone need a lifetime supply of curry powder or a gallon of Kitchen Bouquet? How about 10lbs. of sea salt?? :Bang-Head: |

I'm going to eat :Starvin:
We are having a 22 lb turkey. I have to work the night before so I will be sleeping through most of the prep work. The teen and her DBF are both working the night before and coming home in the am, so they will be sleeping through most of the prep too. Let's hope it is actually quiet! :Zzzz: The man is cooking and the 9 yr old is making his world famous chocolate cream pie because "it's tradition"! I plan on not dwelling on the folks I am missing this holiday. I am saving that for Christmas. :Sigh: |
Thanksgiving
Pictures of items needed to send with them, What a GREAT idea!
I am going to try that one of these days. We did have two huge bags of rice, but since they were in burlap bags for a long time, the rice smelled like burlap.:( It didn't taste the best either, and I am not a rice fan. So they went bye bye sometime. The trip wasn't so bad, I did sit and rest in the truck for a little while before going in. (gathering up my strenght.)(girding my loins) eueeuhhh  Anyway, it wasn't that bad, but when I called my son to see if he was home to carry the stuff in, he wasn't!! So I got my trusty wagon and put the things in there and just pulled it into the house. the puppies were all just thrilled about what momma was bringing into the house. They were nosing thru the bags. it was rather funny. At least they keep me laughing. The turkey was especially interesting to them. yummm. :D Every one take care, it is going to be nice here in Mid ILLinois 74 I think!! woo hoo. And I am off this afternoon, shrink appt. Nice man, really good dr. See ya. Geri |
TG
Let me clairfy.....I will be out of the office this afternoon, not "off" to go to my shrink appt.

TAFFY SAYS, "GO HAWAII!" Explain later................ FG knows why however... |
Boise State beat the crap out of University of Idaho last week - 58-14. :p:p:p:p:p
We might as well beat up on your other kid's school, too! :p:p:p Two undefeated WAC football teams going against each other for the Championship and a Bowl game. It will be an interesting game. Guess where Diffy Daffy and I will be Friday afternoon 7 pm MT??? In front of the TV watching BOISE STATE play HAWAII |
must....not.....kill.....DH.......!!!!
So he won't be home for T-giving and we'll celebrate on Friday instead. The damn turkey is still frozen so he wants to set it in warm water all day tomorrow (Wed) to thaw while he's out golfing from 7 am to 6 pm. Can you say salmonella!!! We argued about it to the point where I said I wouldn't eat it and would cook my own damn turkey if he insisted on this idiotic path. Maybe I won't have to kill him. The turkey will do it for me! |
And Taffy has Warrior t-shirts and sweat-shirts! Ya-baby!
Ya know...they use to be called the Rainbows! Go RainBows! My team can beat your team.... the Rainbows! Wonder why they changed the name? :Scratch-Head: Ok...you watch the game...I will take a nap after stuffing my face! :D |

Hey Taff, the game's on Friday.... Stuffing Day is on Thursday. :winky: |
We're having a small dinner at home with our two sons. I'm roasting a 14 lb Perdue turkey and making all the trimmings. Also making a blueberry pie. :p I'm winding down with my last class this week, so things had to be low key. Next year, maybe a bigger crowd.
The house is a disaster because all I've been doing in my spare time is studying, but that's coming to an end. :) I might even get the house cleaned up a bit before Thursday, since I have tomorrow off. I'm counting my blessings this year, thankful for what I have in this life. Happy Thanksgiving to each of you. You're such a wonderful bunch. :grouphug: |

Yes! Thanksgiving is over and it is Wednesday and I am alive!
What? What is that you say? Thanksgiving is on Thursday this year and every year! Well huh! At school it is done and over! Finished! Now on to the good stuff! The real Thanksgiving! I have all my store goodies. DH and I go to the store together. Yes, put your finger down your throat and gag yourself now! He packs the bags in for me too!:D Thursday we will cook a nice turkey dinner together and three of us will stuff ourselves sick. Have a great Holiday all!:grouphug: PrincessD...this one will be the hardest...hang in there! |
I will be back on Saturday. You all be good.
And Taffy, I know you will find this hard to believe, but I will be without my computer until I return. Yep, no internet for FG. Happy TG everyone! :D |
I get to have my first Thanksgiving with family in several years. I can't believe I missed the chaos. I know I missed the food, yum. Did you know it's my fav holiday and I love turkey?! We all got pies from Amish country, so I better save room for dessert.
My youngest sister is cooking this year. She thought it would be great if we all staggered to the movies afterwards. I bet Fred Claus will be even funnier after a huge meal and several bottles of wine. Dad says we can even have a popcorn fight. Good thing, cuz I don't think anyone will be hungry. Wishing everyone a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving. I am thanful to have found this group and don't know how I ever got along without ya. |
Happy turkey day, turkeys. It's fairly quiet here, none of the breakneck kitchen competition this year. I miss the smells, but not a lot else. It's snowy and cold, a little sun peaking through now and then. It's all fine.:)
|
It's Turkey Day!
A happy day to all! I wish you all could be here with me and I would stuff you silly!:grouphug: (actually Taffy is looking for a guinea pig to try the Soy milk pumpkin pie!) FG? You have cut the cord from your laptop and left it home? Put a star on the calendar! |
Happy Turkey Day to all of you!! :)
:grouphug: |
I woke up this morning and said.."Thank You God For Everything" and promptly went back to sleep..:D
I called my Sis-in-law and had a nice remeniscent talk about Brother Jim. We decided that he is on the heavenly golf course with my DH, John, his DS, Jack and his FIL, Jim. A mighty foursome.:Viking::Viking::Viking::Viking: I am having a quiet day here at home. If anyone wants to drop over with a plate of turkey, stuffing, mashed tators w/ giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls w/butter and a piece of punky pie, I will answer the door.:p :p I'm thankful for all of You....Happy Thanksgiving Day.:grouphug: |
Aw, c'mon, Sal, this is a job for the "stone soup" theory. Hop into your chair and tool up and down the sidewalks with a checklist. Hit enough neighbors to get everything you want, head home, fire up the microwave and enjoy your feast. See? Will=way. You can do it.

I'll hitch a wagon on the back of my scooter and just holler out, "Thanksgiving is about GIVING...All donations are welcome. |
I don't believe it and I know why, but I had to share this with you.....My PODD just called wondering why I had called her, earlier. She was snippy with me, so I knew she was feeling guilty about something.
I asked her what she was eating for TG dinner and she said they had ordered the Kroger's Turkey dinner. I said "OH" and she said, "well we had to eat something". No invite or offer to bring something over, BTW. Who was it who said. " No pain cuts sharper and deeper than that of an ungrateful Child" ? I'm OK, had a good cry and now I'm OK. Don't worry about me...just thanks for being here.:grouphug: |
((((((((((((((((((sally))))))))))))))))))))))
