tulip - parkinson's symbol
It is generally acknowledged that the red tulip is a symbol for PD. But the U.S. doesn't have one symbol representing all PWP.
Karen Painter, a young-onset PWP from washington state created a beautiful tulip design. (below) http://www.pdplan4life.com/files/tulip-1inch.jpg There is a grassroots effort now to spread this graphic far and wide in the hopes that one day it will represent all pwp. Some PD orgs are having lapel pins made for their members. Other orgs are using it on their websites, and for flyers for upcoming events. If you'd like a copy of the graphic to use for PD flyers or events or websites, let me know, and I'll send you one to use. Best, Jean |

The parkinson's tulip is red & white.
I just emailed you one of the graphics. :winky: Quote:

Luv that tulip!
luv it! Saw it on APDA Midwest Chapter Symposium literature. Agree the tulip should be red. Folks sometimes come up with their own colors for PD ribbons, etc. depending whether young onset or not, but ... the tulip should be red.
The tulip is THE symbol for PD in Canada. Glad it's becoming more nationally recognized in US. |
Jean - Thanks so much for the graphics. Our DAPS group plans to use it on a lapel pin in conjunction with our logo. Thanks so much for sharing !!
|
Gayle...
Thank YOU!!!
Your DAPS group has combined this tulip with your own logo - great idea!! (And it looks great!) |
I didn't know tulips were connected to PD in any way. Tulips are my favorite flower, and the graphic is wonderful. Thanks for posting about this.

me, too!
ZF - tulips have always been one of my favorite flowers as well!

I work for a healthcare education institute in Montana and I am designing marketing material for pd education events. Could I use that tulip as my artwork? If so, could you send me a high resolution copy to me?
Thanks |
Use the tulip!

Send me a private message with your email address, and I'll send you graphics. (And if you send me photos of your work, I'll pass them on to Karen - she'd love to see them!) |
Hi Jean,
I see where you have posted that Karen Painter has copyrighted the design - but is allowing people to freely use it! I'm going to try to incorporate it into one of my segmented bowl designs. Then donate it for auction for PD research. GregD |
What a wonderful idea, Greg! It will be beautiful in wood!
|
Greg - that is wonderful!! And a lady in northern AZ is making a quilt with the design! I hope you will send me a photo of it when you are done -I'll post it on pdplan4life!

PD Tulip at Midwest Conference
At the PD conference (on Saturday) presented by the Midwest Chapter of APDA, the 300 attendees each received a PD tulip pin. :o

Tulips for PD ... gotta luv it!
Wow! I attended the APDA Midwest Chapter Symposium in the Chicago area. What a fabulous design! The pins look fabulous!
I hope to use the design in other ways also. Perhaps we could create a notecard that our support group could use for: 1) thank you's, 2) general acknowledgements, 3) memorial acknowledgements, 4) other things we haven't even thought of yet. I love the concept of one unified symbol for PD. If we can't have one unified organization, at least we can have one unified symbol! Thanks to Jean B., Cheryl and Karen Painter (the artist) for making this happen. Here's to tulips for PD! lizzy4451 AKA paula |
Lizzy / Paula ...
Thank you! That is our dream - one unified symbl for ALL people with PD in the States ! So glad you like it!!

Hi - did you know that a tulip continues to grow after it is cut? Also it is one of few flowers that will adapt itself to the type of container used -
straight sided vase they will stand up straight - bowl type they will droop. |

catalyst for change
Karen,
Thanks for your gift to people with Parkinson's. What I've dubbed the "People's Tulip" is not just a symbol, but the catalyst for change long overdue. We will take down the walls that divide the PD community and combine our efforts to find a CURE in our lifetimes. Sheryl |
Symbolism
I think the idea of a single emblem for Parkinson's is a great idea; I applaud Jean, Sheryl, and Karen for their great efforts in pushing this concept forward and bringing awareness to the fractured nature of the national PD establishment - a division that works against the best interest of the patient.
But it is not enough. We must take care that the unifying symbol of the tulip does not come to mean symbolic unity only. We must keep working to bring collaboration among all the organizations on a real level; cooperation in research, education, and advocacy; a dedication to eliminate duplicated efforts, to be aware of what is getting done for patients and what is falling between the cracks. I attended a meeting of the People with Parkinson's Advisory Council sponsored by the Parkinson's Disease Foundation last week in NYC. CEO Robin Elliott is acutely aware of the divisions (we don't let him forget - I am gratified that virtually all of the patients on the committee see organizational non-cooperation and duplication to be an underlying, ongoing, and deeply troubling challenge that is raised at every opportunity), and there are hopeful new program initiatives on the horizon that bode well for better collaboration. It still remains a tough road and a hard sell. The fact remains that the PD organization world is mainly one of competition not cooperation. Let's continue to be vigilant, active, and outspoken (MJFF CEO Katie Hood's "agitators and idealists") advocates for real unity - we can't let the powers that be think that putting the same symbol on all of their literature means the same thing as actually working together on behalf of all PD patients. Symbolism can be powerful. Hopefully, this effort will get them thinking. |
Agree!
Carey -- Well stated! I agree wholeheartedly.
|
I love this!
I agree, this is an amazing design!
