I can't bowl anymore

My husband's family used to do fun bowling outings. I stunk, but had fun all the same. As we are visiting "back home" a bunch of us decided to get together like we used to. While the scores got lower and the waistlines are bigger we attempted to be 20 somethings again.

I had to sit and watch as I can't do it any more. A pair of sticks, 2 AFOs topped off with bad hands & balance made me fearful of
1) looking like the dork on display {the comments about "is she going to bowl? Can she?" really helped my ego - NOT} and
2) falling and hurting myself. I got a bit wigged out about the chance of breaking a wrist or something and then being really helpless.

My husband just didn't get it for some reason. He is usually very good about making me feel whole and normal, but adapting to my needs at the same time. He thought I should just bowl and forget about "things" for a while. Yeah, like my tired wobbly butt can sling around a 10lb ball for a few hours, stay on my feet, not get hurt and take a time out from all of this MSy-ness. Gee, I should of thought of that sooner...

I never had it hit me like this before. What do I do?

Twinkletoes 08-18-2008 11:54 PM

Aaackk! Man it really hurts when you own DH isn't understanding.

And the snide comments -- ouch! What? Do they think you're deaf, too?

Maybe next time you'll have to ditch the alley and challenge someone in a game of pool. That should put some fear in 'em -- I mean, you carry your own stick, right?!! ;)

I can't handle bowling anymore either, but at a family gathering I learned about Bocce.

Much smaller and lighter balls,:) can play it outside or inside if you really want to.
Kind of a mix of bowling/horseshoes.

http://www.bocceballrules.net/

maybe you can get a new family thing going.

braingonebad 08-19-2008 07:20 AM

Last I bowled, it was with my whole company. I scored a 67, a 70- something, then I quite in humiliation.

They were joking "Nice golf scores!"

:p

I used to be not great, but okay. (I am from NJ, after all, lol)

Oh well.... I still ROCK at pinball.

DM 08-19-2008 07:31 AM

AWWW Janie~ I do know how you feel. I was always the athlete in my family and up until a few yrs ago, I thought I was invincible. I too, miss bowling and other activities. You were right to sit it out if you didn't feel you could do it, but I agree~~ the sidelines aren't near as fun.

Just wanted you to know how very much I understand.

(I used to manage a fitness club and that really hit me hard when I couldn't do my job anymore)

take care Janie and your'e a true "300" in my book!

CayoKay 08-19-2008 08:35 AM

I couldn't lift a bowling ball with my dominant hand if you *paid* me.

:o

Janie, people who make remarks like that, well, I've certainly got NOTHING positive to say about *them*

:(

I just simply beg off from social events like that nowadays.

and challenge any "commenters" to a hot game of Scrabble, during which, I'd knock their NOSES in the dust.

:D

AfterMyNap 08-19-2008 09:41 AM

Well, Jane, you can either sit down and take it, or get busy and take it back!

If I were in your bowling shoes, I'd go on at least a weekly, secret mission to master the use of one of these:

When the next bowling date comes along, kick their fat butts and have yourself a laugh to boot. ;)

tkrik 08-19-2008 11:33 AM

First, I have to say I am glad I re-read your title. At first I read it wrong and thought it said "I can't bowel anymore." I was going to post a recommendation to see a doctor soon!

I am sorry about this and how you are feeling. I am not a bowler but is there some way that you can improvise? (Like AMN's picture. lol). Certainly you could bowl from a chair, right? Or maybe team up with another bowler and take turns? If this isn't possible, what other ways can you go with everyone and still enjoy yourself. I think that is the most important part, making things work so that you still enjoy yourself.

weegot5kiz 08-19-2008 01:30 PM

sorry to hear this i dont bowl anymore either its a little bit of a pain, we have been bowling on th Wii systems, that is fun, almost as tiring too, and besides deb picked up a spare and got a strike from the powder room lets see someone do that at a bowling alley. I like AMN's suggestion practice in secret and kick some booty next time

SallyC 08-19-2008 01:45 PM

Waaaaaaaaa, I'm sorry Janie. I miss bowling too. I had a 150 Average, when I had to stop..:(

AZjanie 08-19-2008 02:49 PM

Yeah; I can't bowl anymore either (or turn cartwheels, handstands, jump rope) and other fun stuff I used to be able to do easily.

Now when we bowl with friends I am the cheerleader and everyone has a good laugh at my unique chants...much better than my bowling ever was!
Janie

Koala77 08-19-2008 09:15 PM

I'm another one who feels your pain.:(

DH met when we were both bowling the Tournaments, but neither of us can bowl anymore!

We were both quite good in out time, and I always remember the year I took out the top Women's Bowler of the Year award, beating an ex-Ozzie champion! That's the only trophy I never got rid of when DH and I were clearing out all of our trophies. :)

doydie 08-19-2008 11:49 PM

We have friends that have Wii and bowl with that. At their July 4th party they had a freind there that hadn't bowled in years due to back problems. She was thrilled when she found that she still could do it with the Wii. I just wish it weren't so darned expensive.

Taffy 08-20-2008 12:32 AM

I am a Wii bowler baby!:D Best thing about that is when I am not happy about my score....(I start over again)

I bowl left handed...I bowl right handed. I throw it over my back. (No one gets hurt!) There is other fancy-pancy bowling things you can do to.

So try Nappy's suggestion or try Wii...just try to have fun!:D

Duhhhhhh, what's Wii?.. ...and who's on first?

Taffy 08-20-2008 11:35 AM

The Wii (pronounced we,) is the fifth home video game console released by Nintendo.

Oh Sally... you would love one!
(Thinking Sal would be like the crossbow training shooting up one!):D

My 7yr old GD wants a DS for Chistmas with 3 games..

So is this Wii thingy an adult toy? If so, Are you sure I could handle it?..LOL.. Do you add it to your PC, or is it a stand alone thingy?

SandyC 08-20-2008 12:59 PM

Jim and I are Wii bowler's too! It's a blast!

doydie 08-20-2008 11:42 PM

Sally, I don't know much about it except you hook it into your TV and there are lots of games to play on it. There is even an excersize pod you can buy. there are sports to play, educational things that your kids don't know they actually learning. I don't know what your expenses are but the basic unit costs like $250.00 and the games are something like $50. I was wanting to get one for the family for Christmas then came this family room remodel that is taking $10,000.

DM 08-21-2008 08:41 AM

My bowling team really missed me when I quit, as I was the one w/a huge handicap, which means I sucked. (bowlers will know that it had nothing to do w/my physical problems)

My niece has a Wii, but hers is on a 64'' TV. We have a 46'' in the basement, but I don't do the stairs much... SO~ how big of a TV do you need for a Wii, as I'd like to have one, but my LR TV is only a 27''. (in entertainment center that I don't want to replace just yet) We had a blast playing hers when we were in NC.

Oh and Frank, tell Deb~ nice shot!! But, did she ''hover''???? (grin)

jprinz99 08-21-2008 08:53 AM

Thanks for the suggestions and the cheer guys!

I think what bothered me the most was that I had one of those gut check moments; you know- the feeling that you ARE different and it feels as if someone has sucker punched you in your gut and in your psyche? I have spent the last few days licking my wounds and grieving the loss of the old me. I know... snap out of it:rolleyes:

This time it was over bowling, next time it could be over opening a jar, or having sex or seing a change in my penmenship. I guess what really has gotten to me is the changes that keep sneaking up on me without my permission. It is as if once I get accustomed to "me" life goes and throws me a surprise. I find myself cruising along, perfectly fine with any adaptations I/we have had to make then WHAM! MS reality slaps me upside the head and reminds me I am not always in control of my actions, choices or options. Does it ever end?

Pity party is slowly ending; I guess I just needed to whine to those who had been there. I trust you guys to tell me the truth even if I do't like the answers. :grouphug:

Yeah, those gut check moments HURT big time and make you wonder about yourself. That's the most painful thing of it all.

I remember the first time that happened to me. I made a public scene about it and stormed off leaving everyone with mouths gaping. It didn't matter to me. I was humiliated, hurt, and felt like a 2 year old being told to go stand in the corner for something I didn't do and not being able to stand up for myself.

You don't know where it's going to come from, but it happens. Just another lovely gift from the MonSter to us.

And AMN got it right!!!!!!!!

DM, I have a 42 inch but a 27 inch should be just as much fun. My kids play on a smaller tv at school so you should be fine. Check out EB Games or any video game store for used games and consoles to save some money if you want. We paid $300 for our console and it came with five games on a disk. We haven't even opened the other games we bought yet.

We play golf, bowling and boxing the most.

OH! And you can go online with it and buy old games like Mario and Donkey Kong. lol

weegot5kiz 08-23-2008 07:15 PM

Jprinz those nasty gut reality checks can be tough sometimes, i have had a few bad timed ones myself, hope you have a nice weekend

Dejibo 08-24-2008 09:05 AM

I am a bit spoiled. I have a 50inch TV and that is what my Wii is attached to.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my wii!

The game system is $249 and is becoming more available. the last few target runs, I saw two or three in the case. Game stop is geting more and more.

The balance board for the wii is $89.

Best toy EVER!

I have a PS3 in my bedroom to play FFXI on my 32inch LCD. I hate laying in bed, but when I got very sick with cancer, and was forced to lay down, and too sick to read, and too doped, my neice got me started playing games. I love them!
