Unhappy I can't bowl anymore

My husband's family used to do fun bowling outings. I stunk, but had fun all the same. As we are visiting "back home" a bunch of us decided to get together like we used to. While the scores got lower and the waistlines are bigger we attempted to be 20 somethings again.

I had to sit and watch as I can't do it any more. A pair of sticks, 2 AFOs topped off with bad hands & balance made me fearful of
1) looking like the dork on display {the comments about "is she going to bowl? Can she?" really helped my ego - NOT} and
2) falling and hurting myself. I got a bit wigged out about the chance of breaking a wrist or something and then being really helpless.

My husband just didn't get it for some reason. He is usually very good about making me feel whole and normal, but adapting to my needs at the same time. He thought I should just bowl and forget about "things" for a while. Yeah, like my tired wobbly butt can sling around a 10lb ball for a few hours, stay on my feet, not get hurt and take a time out from all of this MSy-ness. Gee, I should of thought of that sooner...

I never had it hit me like this before. What do I do?

Aaackk! Man it really hurts when you own DH isn't understanding.

And the snide comments -- ouch! What? Do they think you're deaf, too?

Maybe next time you'll have to ditch the alley and challenge someone in a game of pool. That should put some fear in 'em -- I mean, you carry your own stick, right?!!

I can't handle bowling anymore either, but at a family gathering I learned about Bocce.

Much smaller and lighter balls, can play it outside or inside if you really want to.
Kind of a mix of bowling/horseshoes.

maybe you can get a new family thing going.

Last I bowled, it was with my whole company. I scored a 67, a 70- something, then I quite in humiliation.

They were joking "Nice golf scores!"

I used to be not great, but okay. (I am from NJ, after all, lol)

Oh well.... I still ROCK at pinball.

AWWW Janie~ I do know how you feel. I was always the athlete in my family and up until a few yrs ago, I thought I was invincible. I too, miss bowling and other activities. You were right to sit it out if you didn't feel you could do it, but I agree~~ the sidelines aren't near as fun.

Just wanted you to know how very much I understand.

(I used to manage a fitness club and that really hit me hard when I couldn't do my job anymore)

take care Janie and your'e a true "300" in my book!

I couldn't lift a bowling ball with my dominant hand if you *paid* me.

Janie, people who make remarks like that, well, I've certainly got NOTHING positive to say about *them*

I just simply beg off from social events like that nowadays.

and challenge any "commenters" to a hot game of Scrabble, during which, I'd knock their NOSES in the dust.

Well, Jane, you can either sit down and take it, or get busy and take it back!

If I were in your bowling shoes, I'd go on at least a weekly, secret mission to master the use of one of these:

When the next bowling date comes along, kick their fat butts and have yourself a laugh to boot.

First, I have to say I am glad I re-read your title. At first I read it wrong and thought it said "I can't bowel anymore." I was going to post a recommendation to see a doctor soon!

I am sorry about this and how you are feeling. I am not a bowler but is there some way that you can improvise? (Like AMN's picture. lol). Certainly you could bowl from a chair, right? Or maybe team up with another bowler and take turns? If this isn't possible, what other ways can you go with everyone and still enjoy yourself. I think that is the most important part, making things work so that you still enjoy yourself.

I like AMN's suggestion practice in secret and kick some booty next time
