Major Help Needed

I have sbcglobal dial up...
I keep getting disconnected for no reason I see...
I have contacted them and they told me its my puter and to put the disk in and so a reformat...

OK...The disk I have is from 2001 and it wont do anything its saying the windows on the puter are more updated than the CD.

I have XP and need to know...
How can I get an update CD to reformat for free? I don't feel I should have to buy one seeing I have already paid for it.

My puter did not come with anything about restore except it tells me its built in...
I have tried my system restore and it won't work it says It can't opn due to a file not being found. (framedyn.dll)

Any help would be appreciated it is a pain in the butt having to reboot about every 30 minutes.

thanks

hugs

can you look at your dial up and modem connection settings to see if it is set to reconnect automatically?

or if IE the connection settings are there too.

I know when I had dial up there was a area where we could set it to redial automatically and hold the connection longer to avoid time outs?
places to look-
control panel = modem - network- dial up - connections

I have reinstalled xp or I think is a setting to fix- for missing files ect- maybe that is all you need to do.
If you do reinstall- then just click for all the updates since then

that's how I did it just a couple months ago.

but try to check all the settings first.
or you might be able to just search the XP CD for that missing file??

Dial up...

We had Earthlink for about 2 yrs. Lately is has been horrible. It dropped us, stalled, was just terrible. So we discontinued it and got DSL.

Our city had a free dial-up linked to our library, and it died this summer.
We received a letter saying the equipment being used was antequated, and
wireless is being substituted before 2007. They turned off the dial-up in August.

It just might be that ANY dialup is not going to be very reliable anymore. That is the impression I got concerning us.

Curious 11-07-2006 01:23 PM

jen, did they not offer to send you a free disc? do they have downloads for customer updates on their website?

i tried the sbc dsl. fried a new computer. they didn't disclose to me that there was/is an incompatabilty problems with some sony pc's. and they knew i had a brand new sony. :(

i'm on dial up too. :o

"Application Has Failed to Start Because Framedyn.dll Was Not Found" Error Message When You Open the System Properties Dialog Box

You can download framedyn.dll here or in above link. Above link is complicated but worth reading it all to figure out what's going on.
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?framedyn

I'd try downloading the framedyn.dll to see if that'll allow you to do your quick restore. Let us know what's happening.

Lara 11-07-2006 04:09 PM

Just had another thought. I had problems ages ago and wanted to do a full restore. Turned out that my XP didn't come with any backup discs, I had to make them myself, which wasn't a good thing to find out when it was too late and I'd not made the backups myself. I forget what I ended up doing in the end. Hopefully once you download that dll the quick restore will work just fine. If you need any help going through the steps for that just let us know. I've done it as recently as last week LOL eeeeek

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-07-2006 04:18 PM

Downloaded it and it says still not found...
Contacted microsoft today and they said they can not send me a CD because it was already installed on puter when I bought it.

She claimed for a price they may help me..

I ended with no wonder Bill Gates is a rich man he charges for chit he shouldn't...lol

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-07-2006 04:22 PM

OK....
I have a HUGE pan of BROWNIES to anyone who can help me:(

Lara 11-07-2006 04:31 PM

OK. what a pain.

I'll see if I can find anything more about it online.

I just went to Start/run/framedyn.dll on my own computer and got to information about what it is.

http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0...ir.asp?Ext=dll

[it's set to UK not US for me. For you will be different]

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=dll

I'm just looking in there now.

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-07-2006 04:34 PM

Thanks Lara,

When I do start/run/ it says windows can not find...grrrrrrrr
this is a pain....

I still think my son did something to my puter....

Lara 11-07-2006 04:37 PM

found this.

http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:...k&ct=clnk&cd=6

When using System Restore, I receive the following message: 'System restore was unable to start due to a missing Framedyn.dll. Please reinstall the application to fix this problem'. How do I fix this?
A.

This event usually occurs when the Windows path is corrupt. To resolve this issue, begin by installing Windows XP Service Pack 1. Alternatively, you can temporarily address this issue by copying the framedyn.dll file from the \windows\system32\wbem directory to the \windows\system32 directory. If you cannot locate the .dll file in the …\Wbem folder, see Why can't I see system files such as .dll or .inf in Windows?

Q. Why can't I see system files such as .dll or .inf in Windows?
A. Windows hides all system files and files marked hidden by default. To view these files:

1.
Click Start, then My Computer

2.
From the toolbar open the Tools menu, select Folder Options, then click the View tab

3.
In the Advanced settings option for Hidden files and folders, ensure the Show hidden files and folders option is selected and Hide protected operating system files is unchecked. Click OK

4.
You should now be able to see hidden and system files

Lara 11-07-2006 04:48 PM

I have absolutely no idea why it says to install W XP Service pack 1!

Just a thought... are all your installations uptodate, like done automatically?

Jomar 11-07-2006 04:50 PM

when did it start acting up? can you restore before that time?
maybe to before that frame file went missing??

also maybe check into -
control panel/folder options/view/show all hidden files and folders

to make sure you can see all that is there

when done hide them again

do you have a profile set up for your kids and others so they only can have limited access? less chance of them messing things up. you would be the admin/profile {full access}
control panel/users

Jomar 11-07-2006 04:58 PM

[OK...The disk I have is from 2001 and it wont do anything its saying the windows on the puter are more updated than the CD.]

mine said the same thing when i did it this summer- but i asked if I wanted to proceed anyway {or something like that} and I clicked yes.

My copy is about that old too.
Yours wouldn't do anything ?or ask if you wanted to do it anyway??
you can always get the all the updates again after the reinstall is done.
it's how I did it.

Lara 11-07-2006 04:58 PM

Jo, that's a good point. Trying to restore back to a further date.

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-07-2006 05:09 PM

It will not let me restore at ALL...
says I am missing that file and some reason I can't get it back....

Jomar 11-07-2006 05:46 PM

Ok- can you try to do a reinstall ?- not a format and see if you can redo it that way as a fix or repair or a full reinstall?

format erases the hard drive

reinstall just overlays all the files again {more or less- simple explanation of it}

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-07-2006 07:45 PM

Not with the CD I have.....

It says my puter is more updated than the CD so it will not do anything...

 GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr

compaq is a bunch of *)8*&89

What I need to do is to get XP OFF my system so I can use the install disk I have.

They will not help me unless I give them 60 bucks..they are the RUDEST people I ever talked to .

THREE HOURS

Lara 11-08-2006 12:54 AM

I'm so sorry it's turned into such a nightmare. I had a similar problem with Compaq here some years ago. I wish I knew how to help you more.

Curious 11-08-2006 01:07 AM

argh..compaq

i still have mine, but not to go online with. great work horse for running all the accounting i do, but internet..phooey...nothing but troubles.

i hope you get this fixed some how jen. i know computer troubles are a pain. i;m trying to dx a driver problem myself. and microsoft troubleshooting isn't helping much. good thing my local geek squad are so nice!

southernlady 11-08-2006 06:43 AM

And I just spent the last 12 hours redoing mine. I'm still not done cause my computer can't seem to find two of the hard drives that I KNOW are plugged in!!!! AAAAAAAARRRGGGGGGGGGG

But the OLD hard drives died and when I put the new ones in my motherboard decided IT wanted to die too...so I hauled out my husband's old computer with an old graphics card and this computer is a mix of my stuff and his now. When I went to register my copy of XP, I had to actually talk to a human and explain that my computer decided to die. (Third or fourth time I've done this, LOL)

Good thing my copy of XP is a gold copy. Liz

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-08-2006 10:42 AM

OK Bottom line is .....

I need to get XP out of my puter.....

Can anyone give me directions on how this can be done?

Microsoft won't help me because XP was factory installed.
Compaq won't help me without giving them 60 bucks which I don't have.

anyone know how I can remove XP so I can re install

southernlady 11-08-2006 10:52 AM

You will need some type of operating system to put back on there. It will either need to be a copy of XP or it could be linux (which most *distros* are free from the internet). A gold copy which is what a stand alone copy of Microsoft Windows XP Home Sp2b 1pk w/Upgrade Coupon for Vista - OEM is called (one that you buy separately from the computer) typically runs about $90.00 but it is yours and can go on any computer. One that is installed on the computer and is bought WITH the computer has to STAY on the computer so if the computer dies, so does that copy of XP.

Oh, and I FOUND all MY hard drives now. Liz

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-08-2006 10:54 AM

I have the CD to install....

What I need is to get the XP OFF my puter which I can't seem to find any help with.

southernlady 11-08-2006 11:05 AM

Right here: Windows Reinstall by the Elder Geek I hope that helps. Here's his home page: The Elder Geek on Windows XP Liz

Junie 11-08-2006 11:10 AM

Do you have a floppy drive and are you willing to format the Pc if thats what it takes?? Also is the OS on a bootable cd that you plan to install?? If it is yes to all of these I found a trick that I use....I boot up with the floppy or the bootable cd and do a fdisk and then I delete the partition and then it allows me to format drive and reinstall whatever Os I want.
Also, you said you have a compaq...do you have a d drive that maybe has the restore windows on it?? My dh has this on his compaq and you can restore everything to factory settings that way.
Hope I did not confuse you.:)

Is there any way to get a gold copy or a copy of the XP to a CD- at no charge?
I mean, if the puter has XP on it - don't you have a right to have a backup in case its corrupted? Will MSoft allow you to have one, or give you one,
or let you DL one fom the MSoft site, for free?
I'd think a reciept for purchase of the system should let you get it. Hunh?

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-08-2006 11:29 AM

My floppy drive do not work...
It hasn't for ages and even under warrenty compaq REFUSED to fix..

I have the CD to install windows XP and yes I want the system back to what it was when I first bought it...

I again was told I need to get xp out of my sytem then place the install CD to install this is what I am trying but not much luck on getting the XP out of my system...

I can not do a system restore because I do not have framedyn.dll and for some reason can't get it...
I did do a search and this file is in my system but wont let me open

Junie 11-08-2006 11:31 AM

I bought my copies from ebay for about 50.00 and I use it on family Pc's when they crash as long as the windows code key is there. Microsoft won't give you any software for free:(

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-08-2006 11:34 AM

I don't understand...
I was told I did not need a CD to uninstall....

but compaq won't give me directions...

Guess I just go to add/remove programs and DELETE all and anything with the word windows in it....

can't hurt puter aint doing me much good now I have to reboot after each post I make which is not fun

Thanks all for your help... If I am not seen in 24 hours it means I killed my puter:eek:

Jomar 11-08-2006 12:04 PM

Jen - If you don't mind losing all your data - or back it up by copying to a CD- then you can do a full reformat of the harddrive and start back with a fresh install.

then your XP CD should work

or Linux OS are in many Linux books in the libraries if you wan tto try those FREEE

only problem for me is the wireless connection - if a wire or straight to modem -easy

Curious 11-08-2006 12:09 PM

jen, i thought you had an hp....i might still have my compaq start up disk...

Rocking4Epilepsy 11-08-2006 12:11 PM

My XP CD is not a restore CD compaq does not give one.

The CD I have is a INSTALL which means I need to get the XP out of my puter then I can use the CD.

I have nothing to lose I emailed myself ALL items I wanted to save.

I again......Do not have a restore CD the CD I have is an INSTALL which does not work until I remove the current XP from system

I have a compaq....(chit machine)
I have my original CD to install but I need to delete the current version out of puter and compaq wont give me intructions unless I PAY them which can't and will not do.

They claim I should have KNOWN to make a restore CD when I purchased puter...

Ya OK idiots this is the FIRST puter I have ever owned and I was going to know this.......I spent 3 hours or more fighting them last night....

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr I am about ready to THROW it down the basement stairs

Is it a bought CD or one that came with your puter?

If it came with your puter it may be the same as I have which don't work...

It states on CD

Compaq Operating system CD

nide44 11-08-2006 12:27 PM

You don't have an emergency reboot CD?
Norton or Symantec used to have an on line DL for trobleshooting systems, and it had uninstall features. If you could DL & copy that to disk or CD..................??

Jomar 11-08-2006 01:42 PM

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

a listing of how to format { erase } hard drive with or with out XP
{i think! didn't have time to read thru them - a appt soon will check back later}

if all important is saved /emailed -go for it

Normally the XP CD on booting /auto run ect - will ask you about reformatting or repairing or total reinstall.
unles compaq has some thing built in to stop that feature???
