Twink, MRIs, and Olive Oil - Tip of the Day

I learned something yesterday . . .

I had my MRI yesterday. Hating to get MRIs, I followed the instructions they gave me to a T, well almost. :o

They say, clean dry hair with no styling products, no make up, no deodorant, no lotions, etc. I have long hair, fine yet I have A LOT of it. It is also very dry due to our climate in the desert. Knowing that it was going to take a while to dry it, I planned for it. I got out of the shower and attempted to comb this mass on my head. It wasn't going well without my detangler. OUCH!

Then, it hit me, my brilliant idea - olive oil. I use it once a week as a deep conditioner and it works great. (I also use it at night as a moisturizer for my face. It's wonderful and cheap.) So, I thought why not use it now so that I can comb out my hair and with having to dry it completely with the hair dryer it, hopefully, won't damage it as much. On goes the olive oil, hair got combed, and then dried.

DD18 was my designated driver. She went down, got my happy pills, came back, and we left in a hurry as I was going to be late. On the way there I panicked. What if you can't go in the MRI because of the olive oil. (This was an anxious thought, I know). I couldn't call the place as 1) we were in the car on the way and I didn't have the number and 2) let's face it I was a little embarrassed by my possible stupidity. So I make a call to a smart NT bud that may know the answer.

"Twink? Hi. . . . .*tkrik explains her predictament*":o

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D *Twink laughs*

The point of all of this is yes, you can use the olive oil prior to an MRI. So if you have long hair/dry hair and or skin, you can use the olive as a moisturizer before going.

That's my tip of the day. LOL

thanks for the tip Tricia!!lol:D

I wonder if dear Tricia has leftovers:eek:

No leftovers. LOL This was before my pre-medicated state. LOL:o

Wow I wasn't given any directions before my MRI. I do regret not taking out my contacts prior to having it done. But it wasn't as bad as when I painted the ceiling and started seeing spots.

And my tattoo didn't explode either! I miss all the fun!

hollym 12-11-2008 11:02 AM

I never have to do anything special for MRI's either. I do my hair normally with lots of styling products (conditioner, leave-in conditioner, hair spray, etc.) and I wear make up and everything.

Kitty 12-11-2008 11:11 AM

Me, too. I never have any special instructions...except no barrets or hair pins. Nothing metal...and no bra with an underwire in it (I learned that the hard way...:o).

The only test I had to have done where I had to have clean dry hair and no lotions, makeup or other substances on my skin was the one where they glue those electrodes on your head and other parts of your body (arms, legs, etc.). I cannot remember what the test was....I just remember all the gunk left in my hair. But MRI's are easy for me....just gotta remember the bra.....:o

Vonn07 12-11-2008 11:18 AM

I keep sports bra handy just for these occasions!! and they are okay with the staff ...

tkrik 12-11-2008 11:22 AM

Well, I am certainly getting ripped off on my vanity. LOL It is frightful for me, no wait others, for me to leave the house without make up on.;)

I think it is just the people doing the scheduling. The radiology place I go to has like 7 places around town and "centralizes" their scheduling. They must have a standard "read to the patient" prep stuff. I have been using this place for the past 5 years as they have the best set of radiologists as well as MRI machines in town.

Next time, I am going to make myself more presentable. If they can't do it because I have make up on, well I get a free "happy" day from my "happy" pill. LOL

FinLady 12-11-2008 11:23 AM

Yep, the only instructions I ever had was no metal.

Been shooting the tube so much, I have my MRI outfit. Sweatpants with no metal, sports bra, Oversized socks (my feet won't stay still with shoes).

Need an outfit like the bobsled team has maybe?? :D

tkrik 12-11-2008 11:25 AM

Fin - They let me keep my pants on (jeans) but I had to take everything on the top off and put on what seemed to be an extra large hospital gown. That was a challenge as by this time I was feeling pretty good. DD18 was cracking up as she was helping me fix it because it kept falling off and I didn't notice.:p

TwoKidsTwoCats 12-11-2008 11:46 AM

:D:D so someone else who has to have her happy pills to get in those darn things! :D:D (they even let my hubby stay and rub my leg)

They have never told me not to wear deodorant, makeup, hair products..etc.

Now about that olive oil.. it's great for my skin and hair. I also use Burts Bees apricot baby oil, mainly for the nice scent.

legzzalot 12-11-2008 11:55 AM

Wow I am staring to think my MRI people rock they give me a set of scrubs every time I go. And I pack super socks and my own blanket because I am always cold in there.

tkrik 12-11-2008 12:39 PM

TK - They let you hubby in with you? They wouldn't let DD in with me.

I am so getting ripped off! LOL.

kicker 12-12-2008 08:03 AM

I have never gotten any directions except I get asked if I have any Jewelry on. I seldom wear any underwire (or anthing for that matter). Now a MRI vetern, I never wear any sort of metal. When I entered being pushed in a manual chair,The MRI tech. jumped to attention, not letting chair get close to tube, put me on at very end of "platform - bed" as far as possible from tube. I don't know if she feared the magnets would suck my chair into tube (now that I'd like to see), or if chair would hurt machine. No problems except leg kept spazzing after 1 1/2 hours and ruining pictures. She kept yelling "stay still." I'd yell back "I can't control it". She finally got it and sent me home.

Twinkletoes 12-12-2008 08:31 AM

tkrik = Olive Oyl, hehehe!

Twink = Popeye to the rescue! :D

When we first got a MRI machine in a portable/traveling trailer, the techs did a fascinating demonstration for me and others who worked at the hospital. They poked a broom with a metal handle in the tube and let me hang on to it -- you couldn't hardly pull the thing out b/c of the magnets! It practically levitated the broom right in the center of the tube.

They mentioned repairmen who left their tool boxes in the vicinity and all heck broke loose when they turned the machine on!

When they did some sort of recall on an inhouse CT machine, I got a bunch of the magnets. They were just little, about the size of large postage stamps. But STRONG!!! You couldn't pick one off a metal surface -- you had to slide it to the edge. You could actually put one beneath your open palm and get another to dance above it over your hand w/o touching it!

I passed a bunch out to my Cub Scouts with interesting results. They reported about kids at school who made "earrings" out of them and couldn't get them to let go!

My own kids ruined them by holding a stack of them away from another stack and letting them SNAP! I wish I still had a couple -- they were great fun!

tkrik 12-12-2008 08:44 AM

Now you all know why I called Twink! She is one smart lady.

Twink - That is so cool! I would have loved to have seen those magnets.

hollym 12-12-2008 09:53 AM

I have had places make me put scrubs on, one hospital had me change into a gown, but the current hospital (large university medical center) just makes me take my jewelry off and aren't at all concerned with my bra (underwire and metal hooks and all). This is the first place that I haven't had to change any of my clothes at all.

ewizabeth 12-12-2008 09:57 AM

Good idea about the olive oil... A cheap and effective skin softener! BTW, the only thing I have to do is remove anything with metal before I get an MRI.

I love my olive oil. It is the best and cheapest "anti-aging" moisturizer I have found. Using it on the hair makes the hair shiny, soft, and gives it volume. Of note, when using on hair use it before you shampoo. I put it on and sit in the sun (heat) for about 10 minutes and then shampoo it out. I love it.

I have always had to put a gown on and take the bra off. But I have never had to take my jeans off.

I don't quite know why they say clean, dry hair. Does that mean if your hair is dirty the magnets will pull at it and your hair will be stuck. LOL I could just picture the techs trying to detangle my mass from the machine. LOL. j/k. On the flip side, my hair has more static when it is clean and dry. YIKES!!! lol.

hollym 12-12-2008 11:10 AM

I think they want clean hair because they don't want people with dirty hair in their machines. Imagine dirty greasy hair with that halo thing they use for brain MRI's.

Totally agree, Holly. I was just kidding around about that. They have to keep everything as clean and sterile as possible.

weegot5kiz 12-12-2008 11:51 AM

I was wondering trish what type of mri is this I have had 6 or so ,so far and never been told that, only time I was told that was when I went in for seizure testing

tkrik 12-12-2008 12:13 PM

Frank - :confused:type? I just went in for a brain MRI with special attention to my optic nerve and nerve pathways. Since I am having trouble with my eye and it had lasted greater than 2 weeks as well as the fact that I will be due for my yearly MRI in February, the neuro wanted it done now to see if there is a lesion beyond what they can see in my eye as well as another area in my brain that may be telling me I am seeing blurry when the reality is I see just fine.

I know that sounds strange but this is MS and the "wires" do get crossed. Kind of like the time I burnt myself and it took 45 minutes for the burn to register in my brain. I always think of the little kids in the Family Circus cartoon where the mom asks them to do something and there is this little dotted path that runs all over the place and then finally to the proper designation. That is so MS like. LOL. Yup, MS is like the Family Circus cartoon.:D

I get these instructions all the time. That is why I really think the "schedulers" ramble of a set of standard instructions. When I went to the urologist and he ordered an ultrasound the "scheduler" gave me the instructions, which I followed. No eating after midnight, no fluids after 10 in the morning. My appt was at 1:00.

I was starving and since I have trouble with my blood sugar by the time I got there I was dropping. Thank goodness I had worked with the tech and she knew me as after the ultrasound she shared her lunch with me so I could make it home. Anyhow, I told her about the instructions I got and she said those don't matter on the kind of ultrasound I had AND she was telling me how they tell this to her diabetic patients and then schedule their appointments in the afternoon. She said she keeps telling them NOT to do that but they continue.

Momma's Kids 12-12-2008 04:02 PM

I remember my very first MRI(sssigh)

I was all ready for the big event, wore lightweight sweats with tennis shoes, no jewelry...had everything just as it was supposed to be...never having an MRI I wasn't sure exactly what was entailed in this adventure.

I found out rather quickly, they gave me a nice pillow and I gave them my favorite CD...then as they proceeded to slip me into the tube...
The staff was very nice and I was completely calm until they started sliding me into the tube. Being claustrophobic, they and I knew I was not going in...I grabbed the sides and pulled my self back out.

They were so shocked, they didn't know what to do...I said, Hello No I ain't going up in there, uhuh, ain't going. They calmly told me that it was painless, and I wouldn't be alone...

I asked, who's goin in there with me? I know plenty of people have gone in there and come out...only problem it ain't there asset going in there now!!

I finally did calm down after about three xanax...now it isn't quite so bad and I take the xanax before I get there. lol

tkrik 12-12-2008 05:34 PM

LOL Momma! I only go in sedated. I tried once and they had to pull me out 3 times. Then the slapped the Xanax under my tongue, waited 10 minutes, and I was doing just fine.;) Since that time, which was about 3 years ago, I go in the tube nicely (but NOT over - did that once too. lol) sedated.

Now, 3 Xanax would knock me in to a coma! That is a lot or maybe I am a big lightweight. :o LOL

Momma's Kids 12-12-2008 06:04 PM

I haven't had one in over two years...yessiree howdy, they are now insisting I go for a new one. I am being referred to the new neuro here in town...can't wait for that visit. The last one we had here put me in the hospital cause he said...you don't have MS. Yep, now he has moved away far far away...lol

Actually, they change the pillow covers so maybe they just wanted to make sure you didn't use any products that contain metal...like alum, lead, iron

I've used cooking oil to tan faster...never thought to put it on my hair...although I have used baby oil for that.

Baking soda works great as a conditioner...just mix one or two tbs with a cup of water...pour over your hair and rinse...hair will be really clean, because it strips all the build up from conditioners, etc. Once a month and your hair looks healthy.

azoyizes 12-12-2008 06:29 PM

You all have given me so many ideas! I use baby oil as a face and body moisturizer. I rub it into my hands a couple of times a day and my hands stay soft during the winter. They used to crack and bleed without the baby oil.

I've got to try Burts Bees Baby Oil (BBBO), do they have it with a lemon scent?

Baking soda and water as a hair rinse is a marvelous idea. I use vinegar for everything, would it work as a hair rinse?

I was told once to not wear any makeup for an MRI. I wear thick socks, sweatpants, sport bra, and a sweatshirt. I hate to leave the house in sweatpants, but for these tests I do make an exception.

I once had music played during an MRI, but started twitching my feet to the beat so they had to stop the music. :D

tkrik 12-12-2008 06:33 PM

I have heard of using baking soda as a conditioner but have never tried it. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

My mom used to use vinegar in her hair and has always said it works great and makes your hair really shiny. I have never tried it as I can't stand the smell of the vinegar. If you decide to try it, Azoyizes, let us know how it works.

Momma's Kids 12-12-2008 06:39 PM

Becareful of vinegar in your hair...it can leave it with a reddish tint and if you have color treated hair it can change the color. My mother used vinegar and my grandmother still does.

Baking soda is good for cleaning also...I mix salt, baking soda, and mild soap to wash my face...then I use moisturizer when I can remember to put it on.lol
It can also be used for mild indigestion, toothpaste/peroxide, soaking in a bath, laundry, dishwasher to keep it fresh smelling and dishes sparkley.

I wash my face then forget to put on my face cream, not sure why...after all these years you'd think I would do it out of habit.lol

tkrik 12-12-2008 06:46 PM

Momma - I use the same mix for a face scrub but instead of a mild soap I put oatmeal in it and sometimes I will use sugar instead of salt. I swear with all these "homemade" things I save so much money.

sabimax 12-12-2008 06:58 PM

yes TK you got robbed.out of pretty girl look...

never have I had to not do makeup..(although I never wear ti anyhow)
or hair stuff..lotions or deoderant...for a MRI...

now for my mammo...I had to do no lotion no deoderant and such...but nto for a MRI...just no jewelry, no watches, no metal..no underwire bra..etc..

hugsssss,sarah

They have a body oil with almond and lemon oil in their Mama Bee line. I haven't tired it.

doydie 12-13-2008 12:58 AM

My MRI place has me wear one of those disposable hair covers. I wear a sweatshirt and jeans, heavy socks. I just take my bra off right before I go in the tube.
