Beds
Question for everyone. My bed is 11 years old, and it is definatley time for a new one. With my boyfriends RSD, is there a type of bed that will make him more comfortable? Sleep number bed, pillow top, any certain kind that will allow him to sleep at least a little better?
|
Hi,
This question will interest me. I have been sleeping on my boys bed when they aren't here. I cannot get comfortable at all on mine. The kids bought me a very nice thick mattress pad for Christmas and it still didn't help. I am ready for a new mattress. Ada |
hey there
I am also interested in the answer to this question. I barely get 3-4 hrs. sleep, and not always during the same time..so, I get up..never feeling rested. I hope someone has the answer:)
GREAT QUESTION:grouphug: Dew |
I hear a lot of talk about mattresses by Tempur.
I have been sleeping in a hospital bed for years (regular latex mattress). All other beds are far too low for me to get into or out of; this one can be set to a greater height. It's set at the height between a normal seat and a barstool. It's still difficult to get in and out of bed, but at least this bed helps a bit. I can automatically adjust the front and back of the bed (very nice when feet are swollen). I too barely sleep. I wake up every three hours or so if I sleep and I rarely feel rested. That's why I fall asleep throughout the morning (until noon and beyond) and even then I automatically nap (fall asleep) every few hours in the afternoon. It never stops. There are days where I go to bed between 6 and 8 PM, and I still manage to sleep until 2 the next day (with lots of awake time, intermissions). If I don't take my muscle relaxants before bed, I don't sleep at all, then I only manage to sleep about once every 2 days and my legs will be as stiff as hell! |
I have bought both a tempurpedic (foam) mattress and a sleep number bed. The foam mattress was ok..but we only kept it 2 years as it does tend after a while to not bounce back like it is suppose to:mad:. I now have a sleep number bed, and I have had it for almost 3 years. I LOVE it. :heartthrob::heartthrob: Depending on how my rsd is acting, I can make it softer or harder to sleep on. It has mad a big difference in the amount of sleep I get at night. My DH and I do not agree on the hardness/softness of a bed, and this is the one bed that makes up both happy. I will never give up my sleep number bed. They also have the best sheets for the beds. they have corner straps and special corners to make the sheet stay on thru all the tossing and turning you could think of. I have a king, and the sheets run about 180, but I get them when they go on sale for about 80. They last long and feel really nice to sleep on. Hope this helps.

Bed
Myself, I have had to move to the recliner. I do remember someone else talking about bed and they said the memory foam beds or even just a memory foam mattress will make all the difference in the world. I am very poor and cannot afford to make the change however as soon as I can save up:icon_rolleyes: I am going to try to get one for myself. One more thing, you are precious to look for something to make your husband more comfortable:hug:Mine just tells me I don't love him anymore, I wont sleep with him, and he assumes love is the amount of sex he gets.:Bang-Head: I can't do it anymore shoot I can't even lie down anywhere any more. If you have the money, it doesn't need to be the Temperpedic Bed, it just needs to be memory foam. The person I heard this from had tried the Sleep Number and it did not do the trick. I hope you get a lot of feedback so you can help your husband:Heart:That is love in my book!!
Hope this helps tjbird |
Bed
After reading all the posts that you have gotten sleep and RSD are a major issue for us all. Everytime I go to have a procedure or test, I always ask them if they have a spare bed I could have:D Needless to say I get some strange looks, but I would LOVE to get my hands on one.:Help: If any one can tell me how I might be able to get one, please let me know so I can get out of this recliner

Sleep Number Bed Is the Best
Quote:
We too tried the tempurpedic mattress, didnt work. Then we invested in the sleep number system. It is an investment, but one of the best we ever made. We have the king- since it has dual controls- I can have a very soft bed, as low as 15 if i am in a flare and my husband can keep his side firm. then this christmas my sisters gave us the dual control electric blanket. I have cold RSD- so know I can have my side on high, day or night and my husband can have his side off or on a more normal setting. Later we added the adjustable part of the bed. this is because I can not llift my own head. RSD in spine and my neck is very weak. so the abilitiy to raise the head of the bed has been a real benifit for me. In both getting in and out of bed and resting. Please remember to get a script for the bed from your Pain Management Doctor or Primary- some people will be able to have their insurance company pay.If not if you have the script, you are able to write all expenses for the bed off of your taxes. Also there is a medical discount from sleep number if you have a script- and you do not pay the tax which is significant- Ithink we got $500.00 off. Good luck to everyone- its a huge investment but so worth it. As Mary said, all of the products are excellent. Hope this helps you. CZ |
Thank you. I will go on their website and order a free dvd for my boyfriend to watch.

I have moved a lot and bought a few different beds and tried out many. To tell the difference I even tried ones that were way out of my price range just to see comfort wise. Really for me when I hurt a cloud would not feel comfortable but a few things I think you should think about. Also on a side not my friend who has similar condition has where she can sleep at one setting and her husband at another but I think it cost 10,000 but like the other poster said ask for an order.
Anyhow height of matress. Some were so insane high I had issues getting in and out. Also do you sleep on side, back, stomach. Matress toppers have helped me make a not so comfortable matress into a better and on some nights when I need something different to try to comfort me I add a comforter or my microfleece blanket on top of the sheets. It helps me. Good luck |
Sleep Number Bed
I have had my king sized sleep number bed for about 4 years and it is the only bed that I will own from now on (unless I don't have a choice in the matter).
Let me mention another potential option for those of you who may be interested in a sleep number bed but have cost constraints. QVC offers a sleep number bed to members that allows you to make installment payments over six months billed directly to your credit card. That plan worked out great for me and I have not regretted the decision for one minute. I agree with CZ and Mary 100%. EJ  |
Just an FYI for anyone thinking about mattresses. I have a double pillowtop & it is very tall. Ever since my SCS surgery I have had to keep the step my hubby built for me next to the bed. I can no longer get in & out of the bed without it. It requires me to stretch just too much & its uncomfortable. Just something to keep in mind for the future.

Hello,
I have full body RSD. I have a pillow top Serta and my matress cover feels like a pillow top. I use egyptian cotton sheets when my skin is burning and can't tolerate touch they feel really good to my skin. My bed is very comfortable for me. When I am really really flaired I sleep in the recliner with a small pillow under my low back. I think I sleep better in the recliner because I know I can't toss and turn. I move to the recliner so my tossing and turning in the bed doesn't keep my husband awake. It sounds like the sleep number warrants some looking into. Good luck, Sherrie |
All the posts had me sold on looking at a sleep number bed. Unfortuantely the adjustable sleep number bed is not available in my area. I am so bummed. If I am going to spend the money I want the adjustable. I guess I wil have to wait & see if they ever make it available. Thanks for al the info though. Others were listening.

You can go to selectcomfort.com. It is their website, and I know they have a pretty good sale going on right now. In all honestly, I've had everyone tell me that (and that is what I have),the best bed is the sleepnumber 5000. Anything less isn't as comfortable, and anything higher is overkill. I got that info from ohters that have purchased this bed, and the sales people at the store. The only other one I would like to have is the split bed that allows you to sit up in bed. Maybe in the future I'll get that one. For now IMHO there isn't anything better. Hugs Mary ps. if you have a good foundation, don't buy theirs. Use the one you have if it is in the same size. It is much cheaper without the foundation, and the bed is so light that you don't need anything special. |
I would like to hear more thoughts on this issue since I have been sleeping in a recliner since Oct. 2008. I have osteoarthritis in my hips, pelvic bone, and spine. I will take any and all opinions.

An interesting question - thank you for sharing all of your input!
I have a double bed. I haven't had a single bed since I was about 8 years old (now 14) as I just didn't find them comfortable and didn't think that there was enough room in them. Since I developed RSD, my mum has always slept in my bed with me. I fall quite a lot sometimes so my mum prefers to be with me to watch me if I go to the toilet in the middle of the night etc. Also, when I was first diagnosed with RSD, I couldn't walk at all so had to rely on my mum to take me everywhere. Some people think i'm strange because my mum sleeps in the same room as me even though i'm 14 but I tend to rely on her a lot when i'm not feeling well. My matress is super soft. It is a memory foam matress. My mum can get to sleep straight away in it nearly but it takes hours for me to fall asleep! I don't sleep that much either and always fidget as I cant get comfortable. I have to sleep with my leg out of the side of the bed and now that I have RSD in both arms, it is even harder as I can't lay on my sides really now for pain. If your boyfriend has RSD in his leg, it might be worth getting one of those 'cages' for your leg - especially if his leg is hypersensitive. They fit under the duvet cover and you put your leg under it and it stops the blankets from touching you. I had one and it was useful but the hypersensitivity started spreading so after so long, it didn't help really. You can get them off the internet and they are pretty cheap. Some people I have spoken to have said that Orthopaedic beds are good so that might be something to look into also. Take care. |

Take care Ali and thanks for sharing. Sincerely, CZ |
I also get about 3 - 4 hours of sleep per night, mostly because I can't remain comfortable. I generally fall asleep quickly because I am exhausted, and then wake up 2 1/2 hours later to toss and turn the rest of the night.
I travel a bit more than many. I have had the opportunity to try a sleep-number bed, temperpedic (sp?) and others. Last week I was at a luxury resort for a conference and they had an extra-thick pillow top mattress. How soft it was! It didn't help. Anyway, for those who think a "memory foam" type of mattress would be good, I did buy a mattress topper for my mother that was made of this material. It was from Wal-Mart and a lot more affordable than an entire Temperpedic set. I don't recall, but I believe it was under $200. Sweet dreams, everyone. :) Mike |

Thank you for that bit of advice. I was just there at the doctors, but he goes back in 2 weeks and I will ask for one. |
My wife and I just bought a bed, and we love it! It is soft, but also firm. We tried many beds before settling on this mattress.
I was just in Costco and they have a 12" memory foam mattress that is very affordable compared to the tempurpedic. Here is the link. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10002072&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eC at=BC|93|1924|67411&N=4018919&Mo=21&pos=2&No=15&Nr =P_CatalogName:BC&cat=67411&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDe sc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC11879-Cat1924&topnav= The bed we bought is this one http://www.simmons.com/products/bran...eptionale.html |
That looks so comfy. My hospital bed is way higher than that, though. Otherwise I can't get into bed easily. I just have to put my butt down, actually, the setting is that high. Would love to find a normal bed that's that high.

Hi,
Since you and your boyfriend need a new bed, my doc suggested to get a firm mattress. Hope this helps:) and good luck. Kate |
