Anyone taken this before ?
 

has anyone been on noratriptyline before.
i went to a new neuro for my migranes and he started me on this since i am basicly allergic to most of everything inculding migrain meds. he has me on 25mg 1 at night for 5 days then after that 2 at night .. wants me to see how it goes for 3wks then come back... the only side effec so far(started thursday night) is waking up and feeling drunk. any thoughs on this would be great

I took nortriptaline a few years back after being in an auto accident and had damage around my occipital nerves. I don't really remember there being side effects, but that it helped and after a while I was able to get off of it. Don't know if this is of help. But I hope you are doing better soon!:hug:

thanks. the neuro is thinking that i am having both vascular and cluster head aches at the same time ,, yea me !!! one stemming from my car accident and the other from the RSD
thanks for the help.. i am hopping that this helps other wise its off to botox land at 500$ every three months (fingers crossed )

I even googled it, and it's an odd Rx.
But, seems to be one of those Rx that are to Prevent headaches.
I take Zonegran, topomax for that. I get some wicked headaches, before and SINCE the Tbi.

It seems to me to be a "trial" type thing.
Ask your doc!
What is he trying to do, and, some of these others might work better than that one!
Everyone is different, dear!

I so wish, that your headaches can be managed! You're too young for this!

Crap. Ooops I tried to paste a site about nortriptyline but messed up somehow. Anyway if you google this there is a bunch of info about dizziness and migraines etc. I didn't read much of it I'm ashamed to say.

However, Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant related to amitriptyline (Elavil). I do know that initially these tricyclics can make you really drowsy, dizzy, constipated, urinary retetive and some other stuff I can't remember. Some of this passes pretty quickly. On a brighter note, they are relatively good pain managers and work on serotonin and norepinephrine levels.

At any rate, as I know you know, you should talk with your physician about this.

I hope that you are feeling better and again I'm so sorry about what's happened lately in your area.

I was put on a tricyclic anti-depressant many years ago, just to see if it would help with the pain. Tricyclic anti-depressants are commonly prescribed in RSD, they are older generation anti-depressants but work better for RSD (read that somewhere, don't ask me where). For me, the anti-depressants didn't do a thing, except help me sleep better. For that reason alone, I wasn't allowed to take them, because of the many possible side-effects. The newer ones were tried also (SSRIs) and I had an adverse reaction to them. So the anti-depressants were out the window quite fast.

Carrie, I took this a year or so ago for few weeks. It actually made me more depressed than I already was. And I had one other of the minor side effects. I cant tell you if it worked on my headaches or not since I was too depressed to remember. I take topomax for my headaches now & something else for depression. Hope it works for you.

fast, pounding, or uneven heart rate; chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling; sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance; confusion, hallucinations, or seizure (convulsions); easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck; tremors; extreme thirst with headache, nausea, vomiting, and weakness; feeling light-headed or fainting; or urinating less than usual or not at all. nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite; constipation or diarrhea; weight changes; dry mouth, unpleasant taste; weakness, lack of coordination; numbness or tingly feeling; blurred vision, headache, ringing in your earrs; mild skin rash; breast swelling (in men or women); or increased sweating.

ok i knew some of the side effects my sister is a pyshcologist and was tellin me about it.. the reason he chose this one is becuase i cant take elivil effexor amitripaliny,, i have apperantly what the neuro is saying is cluster and vascular migranes one stemming form auto accident the other from RSD. anyways. he wanted me to try this to see if it will help with the migranes as i am allerigic to all triptans (zomig,imitrext etc) ... it has helped me sleep better no drugged feeling just a little foggy for about 15 mins after i wake up.... i dont leave till mid morning early afternoon so it hasnt caused any problems.. so far we are good. 25mg/night till wednesday and will see how 2/ at night do.. so far not many side effect thank god..


i appericate all the in put he also wanted to see that if this would help with my rsd also? nothing so far in the middle of big flare...

i was just wondering since that it is an oldie if other had taken this recently and had any comments about the used of this..

This is one of the many things I have been on over the years. As I recall, I didn't really have any side effects. But, it seems to me it didn't really do anything. I asked the doctor and pharmacist if this was some kind of placebo. Being in the anti-depressant family, it was supposed to help me get a better night's sleep, since the pain generally prevents me from a full night,s sleep without interruption.

As always, we all react differently. Watch for the regular side-effets you might see in any strong drug. And good luck with it.

thanks ,mike. it hasnt helped with headaches yet. alittle with sleep but nothing anything to write home about thats for sure.. since it was 3 my time when i went to bed LOL and up at 6 LOL thanks for the advice appericate it

My daughter on Noratryptaline
 

My daugther was having Migraines regulary and I took to her to a neurologist. He prescribed her noratryptaline to take at night. She has not had one since. But I think it is making her grouchy sometimes. Does anyone have any problems like that?

I am not familiar with this medication,Carrie. I hope you find relief from the new med.:hug:

thanks to everyone that answered. i went up to the 50mg at night and it was way too much went back down to 25mg at night will see neuro again wednesday. and see if there is somwthing between 25 and 50 LOL

I tried that med when I was first diagnosed - I had trouble sleeping when I took it and it didn't do anything for my pain. But maybe it will help you since we are all different.

I currently use Ambien CR 12.5 at night and take Topamax 75 mg twice a day. I also just started on 5mg of methodone 3 times a day, so I'm not sure how it works just yet.

do you know whether you can tolerate Topamax? Since I started taking it none of my headaches have advanced to that "migraine" state. And the Ambien does help me stay asleep for a few hours at a time most nights.

Sorry about your head. That's my main problem also. I hate it. Good luck.

i cant take topamax because it causes 1/ kidney stones and 2. more infections with me .. i have kidney issues since my RSD has gone there.

i have taken this off and on for years with no avail. the noratriplyne has been helping and helping me sleep. but im in a cycle right now apparently i have cluster headaches which i guess the only thing worse pain wise is RSD go figure that i would get both LOL so i go back to neuro wednesday and see if they can give me a dose between 25-50 mg because the 50 i wasnt loopy i just couldnt wake up and thats a problem LOL

im glad that topmax worked for you.. i am also deathly allergic to really migraine meds like imitrex and the rest the med. that is in them all cause me to stop breathing..

I hope you take a "list" or something with you to your neuro this week.
Clusters are a real mind game. (meaning something worse)..
I get them too, but I can tolerate the meds that you cannot. So, I don't hafto live with them constantly.
This AM, I woke with a "Neck" headache, and it got worse through the day, even the new "Treximet" (Imetrex with Aleve, which usually kicks tail) did nothing.
Had to "crack" my own neck.
Wonderful.

I know what you're going through, I did it too, with children, and, they're a blessing, because You've GOT to do, what you've got to do!
They depend on you.
