What Temp Do You Keep Your AC Set On?

Heat never used to bother me too much.....until I had MS. The first summer after I was dx I was always hot....even with the AC set on 72. Seems each year I set it lower and lower. My family complains of being too cool. I tell them to go put on a pair of sweats.

What do you normally keep your AC set at during the summer?

jmiller 05-06-2009 02:24 PM

72 and sometimes lower. When it reaches 76 in here then I seem to be non-functional. DW is always cold so she prepares for winter all the time.

KajunButterfly 05-06-2009 02:26 PM

I voted for 70, but it's usually lower. Heat absolutely drains me. I sure make the power company happy! In the winter, no heat on unless it drops into the 20s, which is unusual here.

kicker 05-06-2009 03:18 PM

I start at 72, I get hot and push it down, By end of day it's 68. I just can't handle heat, and if it's humid it goes down faster. If I'm in my pool in the shady part I'm cold when I come in, so back to 72, eventually 68.

SandyC 05-06-2009 04:17 PM

Wow, you iceburg people! We keep ours at 74 and sometimes actually raise it up because it gets so cold in here. Maybe we have too good of an air conditioner! LOL The weird thing is Jim is always cold and only gets hot if outside in the sun or on humid days. On rare occasions he gets a hot flash and I crank the air down cooler but it's rare. If anything I am the one sweating thanks to menopause. LOL

Kitt 05-06-2009 06:00 PM

I voted 76 but actually we keep it at 78. Just enough to make it a bit comfortable and not that cold. I hate when people have it set so cold.

Riverwild 05-06-2009 06:16 PM

Hot and dry weather?...don't even turn it on, we just open the windows.
Hot and humid weather?...as low as it will go...68

KarenMarie 05-06-2009 06:31 PM

never had one - ceiling fans do the job here -

Kitty 05-06-2009 07:43 PM

I try to keep mine at 72 but have been known to go down to 70 and even 68 in the dog days of August.

My late DH used to love it cold....so I got accustomed to it being about 65 degrees year round inside. His mother hated the cold and whenever he'd had enough of her visits he'd go turn down the AC to about 60 degrees! :p It worked every time!! She'd say "I don't know how you kids stand it so cold in here." We knew she was on her way out when she'd day that!! :D

Lara 05-06-2009 07:51 PM

LOL I sat here for a moment and needed to *think*.

70 degrees = 21C
72 degrees = 22C
74 degrees = 23C
76 degrees = 24C

I use mine sparingly even though we have like 6 months of summer here. It just costs too much to run these days. I try to have it on 24C/76F but sometimes I cheat and put it on 19C/66F when I'm really fed up with the heat and humidity. lol I put my feet in a bucket of water when I start to melt. Not a good look, but it works. :D

Hubby likes it cold. He is used to being in the gym with air going full blast. I keep it set at 80. Most days don't even turn it on. It's cooled off by the time he gets home, then I turn it on if needed. Unit doesn't have to work to hard to lower it just a few degrees.

Plus with the kids going down to the pool..coming in al hot, not a good idea to have it too cool. Too much of a change.

I do love the low electric bills.

TwoKidsTwoCats 05-06-2009 10:55 PM

From April through early June it is set at 75. By mid June through September it is usually down to 72. We have 7 ceiling fans throughout the house that pretty much run 24/7 year round. We just change the direction when switching from heating to cooling. We also run a dehumidifier in the bathroom to cut down on humidity in the house.

PolarExpress 05-06-2009 11:29 PM

If I'm sittin' around the house doing nothing, I can leave it at 75 or so. Any meaningful movement, it's set at 70, sometimes 68. I can't take heat at all anymore...:(

Koala77 05-06-2009 11:39 PM

:Sob: I don't have an air conditioner. :Sob:

ewizabeth 05-06-2009 11:53 PM

76 degrees for us, I supplement it with a fan as needed.

Actually this is the first one I've ever had in my entire life. It's in my bedroom too but I can't even sleep with it running.

You wouldn't need one for long down there would you? ;)

You must have a fireplace or heating though? brrrrrrrrr

Anne, did you go through that awful heat wave without an AC??

Koala77 05-07-2009 04:55 AM

I did Kitty, but as Lara so rightly said, the state I live in at the moment is much cooler than all the others here in Oz.

We had the gas man in today to replace the gas cylinders for our heater, but do you think the heater will work tonight, even with full gas cylinders??
No way!

Oh well, looks like tomorrow we get the heater man out to check the heater.....

Our latest stimulus package won't last long the way we're going! :(

:Off-Topic: .........

BTW and totally off topic ...... I dyed my hair today.
.....................
Does that mean I have to start a whole new thread??

Nah.......not unless you want to start a new thread about hair color! I colored my hair, too, but it was on Monday. :p

What color did you use? :D

Koala77 05-07-2009 05:36 AM

Chestnut, which is a big change from blonde. What colour did you do?

Kitty 05-07-2009 05:40 AM

I used the same old thing I've been using for years......Extra Light Beige Blonde. It's a shade or two lighter than my natural color. Plus I get the body and texture from the color that makes it more manageable.

Koala77 05-07-2009 05:44 AM

OK. That's a pretty colour from your photos. I was going to go a darker blonde, but ended up doing something totally different.

All the gray has gone, so I feel younger if that helps. :)

Now I just have to think of some way that this relates to air conditioners. :D

Kitty 05-07-2009 05:49 AM

Well, without AC I don't think I could have walked around the house for 30 minutes with my head wrapped in plastic!! :p

I'm so spoiled. :o I've become so accustomed to the AC that just the thought of not having it panics me! We never had it while I was growing up. We had an attic fan that kept a cool breeze blowing throughout the whole house. Of course, we had to keep our windows open. I don't remember the pollen bothering any of us back then. It seems worse now for some reason.

Koala77 05-07-2009 05:53 AM

Some states in Oz get quite hot in the summer, and although we never had AC when we lived in those states, we always had ceiling fans. Now we don't need them! :(

We do have plenty of heating in this house though..... just nothing to cool us off.

freeinhou 05-07-2009 06:05 AM

78 degrees. I'll turn it down for a couple hours when the air has too much water in it.

Tom

tkrik 05-07-2009 12:21 PM

Between 72 & 75. I turn it up a bit at night as once the sun sets it cools down outside quickly and it feels cooler inside.

AZjanie 05-07-2009 03:31 PM

I didn't get a vote as we keep ours on 80 or 82 degrees. We have a nice dry climate and a breeze nearly all the time so rarely use the ac even when temps are above 100.

We have no trees but somehow the house stays cool with just ceiling fans and a few floor fans so we are fortunate! :)

The desert cools at night so nice we can keep windows open to hear the coyotes sing!

Darlene 05-08-2009 03:58 PM

We keep it at 74 here. We also have a ceiling fan in all of our rooms.

Dejibo 05-11-2009 02:32 PM

We have ceiling fans in most every room, and open the windows alot, but once the temps outside hit close to 80, I become non functional, and MUST seek shelter or sit in someone's fridge. Mine is normally set on 72, but I will lower it to keep me blasted if I am having a tough day. Once it starts heading towards 75 and above outside, I seek shade, and cooler spots, once it hits 80 I am inside, and in the dark. After that, its all shades down, curtains closed, and AC blasting.
