Avoiding showering

I hate showering!!! I'm not a dirty slob at all, it just takes so much energy away from me . I don't make the water too hot but you need some heat and then there is the drying off and the getting dressed and only when really necessary the blow drying of the hair....

I don't actually hate showering I love the way I feel after a nice shower and the effects have worn off its just I hate that it makes me feel the way it does at first...:(

Its one of the things regular people can do with out even thinking about it....

I'm whining and I have to take a shower so I'll be back.

Dejibo 06-03-2009 01:58 PM

At first glance, I thought your post was about Shoveling! I need to take a nap. :o

I love the bath once I am in there, but the prep for the whole thing makes me crazy. The gathering of the supplies, the clothes, the wet hair, what a ruckus for a clean bod. there are some days I just dont wanna. :p

AfterMyNap 06-03-2009 02:04 PM

Ah, yes, SAS (shower avoidance syndrome). For the life of me, I can't recall who coined the term, but it works for me!

I love being in the shower, it's getting myself to do it and the aftershock of exhaustion that drives me nuts. I've taken to night time showers these last couple years so all I have to do is crawl into my jammies and wait for my hair to dry.

The last hot shower I took was in 1995. I miss that.

I'm so lazy nowadays, I shower and get into my jammies before I go for my massage. It's pathetic, yet, remarkably comforting, to reach a condition (and age) where I just don't give a damn about it anymore. :o

Blessings2You 06-03-2009 02:39 PM

Almost everything so far could be a direct quote from me.

The best feeling isn't that you're all clean and squeaky and smell good, it's that you don't have to do it again right off.

What's working for me (until the weather warms up, ugh) is Day #1 - Shower and wash hair. Day #2 - Wash up. Day #3 - Quick rinse, don't wash hair. Repeat. Of course, if I get sweaty (oops, ladies don't sweat, they perspire - sorry, Grandma) or I have to go somewhere, the schedule changes.

Old people such as myself don't stink like teenagers if they don't shower every day, and if I'm just going to be puttering around the house, I don't care if my hair doesn't look like the Breck's girl's. I'll stuff it in my cap.

I do wish I had a walk-in shower. In the summer I don't usually blow-dry my hair, I just let it get dry if it wants to.

braingonebad 06-03-2009 03:20 PM

I give myself a day off from the whole ordeal each week. I've tried the bathe-at-night thing. But I wake up sweaty - sorry, B2Y's Grandma, but I do sweat. And need to shave a LOT.

:o

I think I'm part monkey or something.

Maybe just shower in the morning and get back in my jammies? Can I do that?

ali12 06-03-2009 03:25 PM

I totally understand what you mean, Ckepi!!

I LOVE the feeling of being clean BUT it is too hard and tiering to get in and out of the shower now!! When I get out of the shower, I am usually too tired to do anything and have to take plenty of time to rest before going out which is pretty frustrating!!

I find getting in the bath tub is easier than having to use the shower as I dont have to stand all the time until I get out. I still get very tired but it isn't quite as bad as when I get in the shower.

Sorry that you have to deal with this also!

Me too! I have never met anyone who is a furry as I am. its just silly! I take the whole winter off. No short, and tights under my skirts if I wear a skirt, means no one is looking. ahh! the freedom.

I too take my bath at night. I cant stand up in the shower long enough. I have a bench, but I always feel more handicapped when I use it. I crawl into bed with the ceiling fan going, and drift off.

Riverwild 06-03-2009 07:27 PM

Yup. :(

The whole washing waist length hair, 6'2 body, actually REACHING my feet...and FORGET shaving! It takes an hour just to shave! It's all such a freakin' ordeal and there's NOT enough ROOM!!! I'm always banging into the shower head and getting the curtain stuck to me! :Crowded:

(i'll admit it, i haven't shaved all winter and i don't care.) :p

((correction: i care now that it's getting nicer out and i want to shed my winter clothes, but i could give it up forever and not care, and it doesn't bother the old man either))

B2Y- I am with you on the walk in shower! I just have to actually START the job of doing the bathroom makeover and I WILL have one with the built in bench and the shower HOSE along with the one on the wall that we do NOT have to duck to get under!

(i'll be showering outside for the summer and I WILL have room out there!)

SallyC 06-03-2009 07:52 PM

SAS (shower avoidance syndrome)..LOL, Cindy!!

Well, since I have a new bathroom and a new hand held shower thingy, I take a shower more often, but it is still damn hard to get er done without killing myself..

The shaving thing..well I'm blonde and not at all hairy, so I don't worry about it in the winter. I found a new gadget, and I can just rub the hair off my legs. It's great....no more shaving. I forget what it's called??

It's just my DH and me at home now and I usually take a shower while he is at work so I leave the bathroom door open and that keeps the bathroom a little cooler. A freind of mine made me one of those head wraps you put on your wet hair and I keep that on until my body is cooled down enough to dry my hair. Plus I put on a night gown right after I lightly dry off so i don't have to deal with clothes until I have the energy. I don't want to sit on my lliving room furniture while my body is still a little damp so I usually go play some computer games with a ceiling fan on. I must admit those are my lowest scores but it helps me cool down so I can dry my hair. And if I really need it I set up a small fan on me while I dry my hair. My DH just doesn't understand why I need to keep my hair cut short. I don't think he would read all these comments if I printed it off but I wish he would.

Twinkletoes 06-03-2009 11:45 PM

Hey, woman! Been wondering where you were!

And now I know: you're in the shower!

Yeah, me too. I like being clean, but I don't enjoy the process.

I'll tell you one thing that I really love about showering. I installed a gizmo on the wall that holds my shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. All I have to do is push a button to dispense them! No more fumbling with bottles that are hard to open and squeeze. I got it at Home Depot for $20 and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! :heartthrob:

PolarExpress 06-03-2009 11:56 PM

Showers make me feel so dragged out & dizzy..And I don't even use much hot water anymore. I gave up blow drying my hair a couple years ago. It's really thick and almost down to my waist, so way too much work. Wish they had those cool sonic showers like on Star Trek..:BeamUp:

kicker 06-04-2009 03:22 PM

When I took a shower in the regular shower, I was so exhausted and hot afterwards I'd get to my room, lie down on the bed for awhile until I got some strength back, Now I have a huge roll in handicapped shower, DH rolls me in, transfers me to shower chair, later I'm gotten back into chair, can do Makeup and hair now ok. I sit through everything now, but actually get more done. I can finally have hot showers again, I'm sitting down already!!!

Kitt 06-04-2009 05:04 PM

I can't take a hot shower. My shower is lukewarm. Sounds funny but that is all that my body can stand. It's the same if I soak my feet with Epsom Salts. The water is lukewarm or the feet go crazy. I need to be very careful as I can't feel the water temperature that well either. Really warm/hot water would wipe me out as well. It can relax the muscles way too much. An OT told my support group that. True for anyone with a neuromuscular syndrome. And I only do a very short shower.

I used to wash my hair in the shower but quit that long ago. I cannot stand there that long or for that matter be able to without hanging on to a bar. Sitting isn't really an option. I do the hair washing in the sink. I'd love to have a walk in shower. Maybe some day.

I do love the feeling of a clean body after the shower. It can be soothing at that.

Dejibo 06-04-2009 05:31 PM

I gotta get me one of them all in one soap dispensers. I dont use Liquid soap because it has Sodium lauryl sulfate in it, and bar soap doesnt. So, i just need a shampoo dispenser. Maybe I can velcro a clothes pin on the wall , and clip the bottom of my shampoo tube.

oh gosh! look at what time it is. time to get back in the shower.

My Olhipie always wants me to take a shower because it will make me feel better...so he says. It wears me out.

I do like the shower after I'm done its just getting me in. I'm like Snoopy, I do it all everyday....

I do love to just put one leg up on the shower seat and let water as hot as I can take it and stand there for a few minutes. We call it warming all the metal in my back...cooking me from the inside out!!!

I have very oily hair so washing it is a must do everyday.

There should be a shower like they have on the Jetson's...remember...? Couldn't find a picture of them showering....

SAS.....ROTFLMAO, Cindy! The whole process drags every ounce of energy I have. Make up? Te he, I do that maybe once a week. I live in a hot and humid place so I have to force myself to do it every other day.

But it's pool season now soooo now I can get in and chlorinate myself and rinse off with the hose after, ta da, done! LOL

azoyizes 06-06-2009 09:18 AM

I'm with you guys, I used to love showers and baths. Bathing is out, because I can't get myself back up out of the tub, I don't want DH hurting himself trying to help me out, and we don't own a CRANE yet! :D

Can't stand up for long in the shower, so I sit on a Rubbermaid stool that I find is easier than a chair and doesn't make me feel as handicapped. It's thigh-high, and very stable. Then, I use the grab bars attached to the shower walls to stand back up again, and hold onto until I'm safely out.

What a royal pain. But, I must have my nightly shower. I can't stand to get into bed without it.

My hair is very short, no problem there, and I love it.

After my shower, I put on my sweats or gown depending on the temp, then go sit in my recliner and read or watch a little TV. That gives me a chance to rest up before the going-to-bed routine!

Thanks, guys, but it isn't mine! A long time ago someone posted it and I've always remembered that "SAS" because it's hysterical.

I just wish I could remember who posted it!

Kitty 06-06-2009 09:30 AM

I love my shower. It's a walk-in type with a bench on either side so I can either sit or stand. I've never had this type of shower until I moved into this house. I never knew how much I'd come to love (and depend) on it!

Even though it wears me out some days I take a shower every day.....and in the summer sometimes twice a day. There's something about taking a cool shower before going to bed in the summer that makes me sleep better.

Sometimes it's the only thing I do in a day.....get up, take a shower, put on clean jammies and lounge around the rest of the day. :o

Dejibo 06-06-2009 09:57 AM

it was running up on 9 last night, and the DH says "you gonna get in the bath?" I stared at him. I told him I was being a SASSY girl today. He gave me the  face. I said I had shower avoidance syndrome today. He gave me the pointed finger, and said "MARCH! Missy. it will make you feel better." I was doing all sorts of other things, and when I went into the bath, I found he had drawn one for me! :D what a guy! I did feel better after, but the work up for it, and then the wind down after always take a bite out of me, but hot days are so much worse.

ckepi 06-07-2009 06:36 PM

Thanks every one!!! It helps to say it to people who understand and don't think I've grown three heads lol.

I'm so glad the DD is 7 and takes care of herself in the shower now. I used to have to go every other day with her I couldn't do both and every thing else that needed doing.

It's getting hotter in CT which means every day showering will soon be a necessity.. but what are you going to do

I'm worried about the electric bill this summer if I don't find a job soon. I have worked in a grocery store for years so always had AC to get me through :( .

Oh well this to shall pass.
:grouphug:

NurseNancy 06-08-2009 09:48 PM

i like my showers too and sometimes i skip a day if i don't have to go out.
i have a seat but don't use it. what really tires me out is if i have to wash my hair. it's short but still needs to be styled.

my muscles hurt so much that i like my water hot but have to watch that too.
i allow time to sit and rest afterwards.

talk about using your "spoons". it takes about 2 for that project.

lady_express_44 06-09-2009 11:04 AM

I wonder what it is about this ... I can go out and work in the yard for 3 hrs, or clean my cars in the sunshine for most of the day ... but I dislike having a shower too?

I was always an "every day" kinda' gal, since I wanted to look my very best for work. I was in mgmt too, so I guess I had to look polished and business-like ... greasy hair just didn't cut it.

Maybe it's partly because I don't HAVE to look my best any more, i.e. "I can", and partly because I hate the sensations I'm left with for an hour or two after. It makes me weak, buzzing and numb . . . feelings I want to avoid.

If you think about it though, my mom came from a farming family, and they only had bath's once a week ... whether they needed it or not. They had to boil the water for the baths, so there were often a few kids that bathed in the same water, after another was done. GACK!

My mom, even in the 80's, would "sponge bath" most of the time, and probably only bathed a couple of times a week. Every Saturday she went and had her hair done at the beauty parlor, and the rest of the time she just piled more hairspray on.

I think maybe we've become a bit phobic about cleanliness because of convenience of having built in showers/baths, and because "perfection" is drilled into us with the media influence.

I'm wondering though, has anyone noticed that they don't grow much hair (legs, pits, etc.) as they are aging, or could that have something to do with the MS?

Cherie

Dejibo 06-09-2009 01:55 PM

its that time, and I just cant bring myself to get the energy to do this. Maybe after a break and some rest. Till then, I am gonna be a stinker.

For me, it's due to aging and also CMT.

I do a sponge bath on the nights that I don't shower.

april1848 06-09-2009 06:59 PM

I'm an oddball too; I love showers. I can't take baths anymore, and my showers are a little cooler, but I just gotta do it, and everyday. I love having lots of paraphenilia--fun shampoos and soaps and such. The other day my husband bought me some soap that was supposedly concocted by Napoleon for his wife, and I was in ecstasy.

I have crazy curly hair, and if I don't wash it in the morning, it becomes very, very scary. I also do my makeup on work days, at the very least, I'll do foundation, eyeliner and mascara. I have stabbed my eye with the mascara wand a few times, and I've screwed up my eyeline a zillion times, when my tremors are especially bad. It takes me a long time to get ready in the morning anymore, but I feel so much better about myself at work when I'm made up. My weekday morning routine includes rest after my shower and rest after the makeup, but it's worth it to me, for work anyway. :)

Snoopy, thanks for the recommendation! I have been on a search for the right shampoo and conditioner for years, so I'll definitely try it. Curly hair is so much fun--sarcastic tone here.

So you're a shower accessory freak too? I'm glad I'm not the only one. Right now I have two shampoos, three conditioners, three bar soaps, three shower gels, and two kinds of shaving cream in my shower, plus one conditioning hair mask. Yup, I'm definitely a freak. I like to smell different every day!

Blessings2You 06-11-2009 04:33 PM

I'm still laughin' about not having to shave as often. A few weeks ago my granddaughter (19) was here with my daughter, and we were talking girlie stuff.

I pulled up my pant leg and asked my granddaughter to guess how long since I shaved my legs. She looked carefully, and kind of stroked my shin with her fingertips, then my calf, and said, "Oh, I'd say one day?"

When I told her "about eight years", her eyes got as big as dinner plates and she couldn't even speak! She kept looking back and forth from my leg to my face to see if I was kidding.

Wait until she finds out about all the OTHER stuff that happens when you get old.

Maybe we don't need showers as often, either. Or else we just THINK we don't because our noses don't work as well and we don't know we stink. (Think about THAT for a while.)

Kitty 06-12-2009 04:29 AM

Snoopy and April.....have you tried Philosophy products? They have great shower gels and scrubs and their hair care products are wonderful. They're expensive but you can find great deals on eBay. That's the only way I could ever afford it.....and they last forever. You only have to use a little drop and it lasts and lasts.

My shower looks like yours does.......wish I could use up one thing before I get another!

april1848 06-12-2009 03:15 PM

Oh boy, Snoopy, I didn't even scratch the surface about my facial cleansers and body lotions. I have too many body lotions to count. My best friend has a discount at Bath & Body Works so I have tons of their stuff. My favorite is Japanese Cherry Blossom. ANd since I have combination skin, I use different facial cleansers all the time. Plus toners, exfoliators, moisturizers, masks, etc...

Kitty, I LOVE Philosophy's products. They are pricey, but like you said, they really do last. Their shaving cream is my favorite. Their products have the nicest smells.

On my last Sephora run, I got some shaving cream made by Terax that has menthol in it. It's great, since showers, especially shaving, can heat me up for hours. The menthol feeling really lasts and keeps me cool. It isn't the best smell, but that's what all my other stuff is for!

LoisLane 06-21-2009 12:44 AM

About 6 months ago I started having problems with the arm strength required to wash hair, condition hair, wash body and dry off. The towel felt so heavy by the time I was done with the showering that I couldn't help but start sweating and wanting to lay down. I started alternating things... one morning I will wash my hair in the sink, the next morning I pin my hair up and take a shower. That method has worked great through the winter but I'm concerned about summer, now that its here.

I think we solved that, though. My MIL recently moved to a new house and changed the bathroom light fixture to a small 6 blade, 30 inch ceiling fan. Years ago I thought a ceiling fan in the bathroom was ridiculous but this one was so cute and VERY practical for me now. So I found one at Lowe's for about $35 and it comes with a light kit too. DH installed it on Monday and I have been able to get ready in the morning without overheating and getting noodle arms. I love it!

LOL! I remember visiting my grandma when I was about 8 and she would sit on her bed with a scissors and cut off the dozen or so hairs on her legs. That really left an impression!
