hey poochie,

i'd 1st go to your pcp or neuro. sounds like you might have what's called a neurogenic bladder. it's MS related. the symptoms are exactly what you've described.

i suffer from that and got referred to a urologist to dx it. i've been on a med, vesicare (there are several) and believe me it's saved me a lot of embarrassment. you may have to bite the bullet & take a med but 1st get it dx'd (diagnosed).

also, if you constantly can't empty your bladder & urine sits in there it could open you up to an infection. and, speaking of infection, that in itself could cause some of these sx's (symptoms). make sure you don't have one.

i don't have any sx's anymore. this 1 med has really helped me.

poochie,

Yes! Neurogenic bladder was my very first sign of something wrong (then leg numbness etc, and finally a dx of MS). I have had it very bad for four years, and finally I got Botox and my life has been totally changed.

I was in diapers 24/7 and couldn't control my bladder at all. If the urge came on, I had like 30 seconds to get to a toilet or I'd just wet myself. If I was out of the house a lot of the day, it wouldn't be uncommon to wet four diapers (and they'd be SOAKED, not just a little leak).

Also I couldn't fully void. So I'd go, and minutes later need to go again, and so on.

I tried all the drugs for it, and none worked (Ditropan, Detrol, Vesicare, Myrbetriq). These may work for you. The side effects aren't fun, dry mouth was BAD. I'm a dental hygienist so I know that dry mouth is not a side effect to take lightly. And these drugs are known for that.

I tried lots of behavioural therapy... counting backwards from 100, doing Kegels (which before I took Lemtrada in May, I couldn't do at all), etc etc. Nothing worked even a little bit.

Then my appt with a urologist who deals with a lot of people who have neurogenic bladder came along finally, and she suggested I have bladder Botox. The procedure was easy, didn't hurt much at all, and my life has been so much better since. No more diapers!!! I can't pee on my own though, and I have to self-cath every time. But that ranges from 3-5 times a day and once I got the hang of it (took a week to get good at it), it's really not a big deal at all. It did take longer for me to wrap my head around needing to cath daily. But I find with MS, most of the battle really is wrapping our heads around things! I can still do everything, just a little differently. I could never, however, wrap my head around wearing diapers. It was constantly upsetting to me. I feel so much more normal now and it's SO NICE to wear pants and not have to wear a long shirt that covers my bum/front to hide my bulging diaper!!

Talk to your doctor, get a referral to a urologist... if you can ask if there are any who do Botox that would be best. They won't do Botox if other methods will work (drugs). But I'm so happy now and hope you can be too. We're so lucky to have MS now when we do, with so many treatments!

pooch,

how are you doing?
sometimes taking a med is the better option to prevent you from developing other problems.

poochie 10-27-2015 05:31 PM

Hi Judy, doing ok, don't see the doc till December, I will talk with him then, I have increased my fluid intake, that seems to help empty more but I do know I have a problem. Thanks for asking.

i've been thru the same problems, first i took vesicare so i wouldnt wet myself, and then had to be catheterized when i couldnt go! so now its tough to urinate, so i take flomax and hytrin to help with that. still a struggle to urinate sometimes. and i usually have to go again within 15 minutes, so my bladder does not empty fully...
