Embarassed to ask...

Hi,

I am so embarassed to ask anything about computers because I barely know how to operate one. I have a laptop and I want to throw it at the wall. All I do on it is email, shop, pay some bills and that kind of thing. I do not download any movies, games xrated junk etc. I have webroot security installed on it.

IT runs super slow, it freezes up, the page will change by itself and then flip back as if it is posessed. My webroot scans everyday and does a complete cleanup every other day of every kind of file. BUT again, I know nothing about computers. I added more memory and the computer doesn't even recognize it!

Any suggestions other than throw it at the wall?

How old is your computer?
What OS do you have -- windows xp, vista, win7 - or Mac?

Is the Webroot the free version or the full security suite?

You have to make sure it's the right kind of memory, usually matching what you have is the best way.

You might try something like Glary Utilities
It has a simple One click clean up and has good ratings-

I've used it for many years.

more free cleaners/optimizers- read about them - some are simpler than others
http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0...tsTile;navForm

And after the cleaning it would be good to do a hard drive defrag.
That's in Windows (XP anyway) menu - Accessories/ system tools/disk defragmenter

It does sound like you have some other stuff happening.
these might be good to try too.

many more free tools - McAfee is one of the top rated security sites

and maybe change out the webroot for something new -

I find most of my programs on Cnet, anywhere else - too risky.

Don't be embarrassed, I ask dumb questions here all the time. I think computers and the entire internet have been designed by 'guys who like to tweak stuff'. :D

Thanks so much for all of the info. My webroot is the full version (purchased). I am sure the free download stuff is probably just as good but I get nervous with trial things, so I just bought it, plus I bought the one for 3 computers for other family members to install as well. It was a better deal than buying for a single. I did go to the Clary Utilities also which brought me to a registry scan for the computer and WOW, was my computer a hot mess! Of course I ended up just buying the program or whatever it was PowerSuite. To clean computer files, defrag, speed up computer tweak computer, repair damaged files etc. I must say, it has improved ALOT. I do think I messed up though. I bought the single Registry booster first last night and thought that was all I needed untill today! So....then I bought the Power Suite, so I am not sure if I bought the registry thing twice (if it was in the powersuite) but anyways..for $60 total versus taking it in to a shop, I think I made out still. It doesn't seem to be doing any of the things I mentioned in my original question!! :)

Glad to hear it's running smoother... nothing worse than a slow PC!

We used Microsoft security essentials here at work.. it's pretty good, low footprint, works well, and it's free!

a program called ccleaner (crap cleaner) is pretty good too, use that from time to time. Otherwise, make sure you have good hard drive space avail, or it will be slow. The ram should just work once plugged in.. so I guess you havn't got the right clock speed or somethin? It's a minefield these PC parts..

Not really related to your problem it seems, but when you were talking about your mysterious page possession I remembered with my laptops and that pesky square mouse thing that controls the pointer. When I am typing or doing other things I sometimes forget and let my palms or lower thumbs brush up against the mouse pad and that would sometimes cause a variety of mysterious actions. You see that little touch pad also has many other functions incorporated into it. Along the sides of the touch pad are sometimes scroll or page up and down controls. They are supposed to make navigation easier but when you have us big handed people trying to control the blasted thing........

Not that I'm any kind of computer expert but have you ever done a system restore. You choose a restore point, and hit okay, or enter or submit or whatever is prompted and BAM, your computer is supposed to operate as it did on that particular day.

Have you ever done this?

I hate the touch pad on laptops... even with adjustment, I can make things happen, by just hovering over that darn thing!

I also used to "kill" my watches... so I gave up on watches years ago. I think some of us just have a powerful aura or something like that! LOLOLOL;)
