Magnesium helps my wife...
 
Hi all..y wife was diagnosed with "probable ms 7 weeks after we got married...4 years ago...I try to help and understand...I know I never will really know what my girl goes through..having said that, I have witnessed what to me was miraculous...(I won't use her name cuz she doesn't know I'm talkin here)...she went to a holistic dr. He told her her could help her...she had a bad flare last summer that put her in a chair for 4/5 weeks...my baby's a fighter...anyways...as a result of this attack her left hand was so sore that she cradled it. The dr. Had her rub magnesim in liquid form on her hands...within 15seconds she was clapping her hands...we now rub it on any and all areas that hurt or are sensitive...

It give her some relief...it may not work for you like it did for my girl but give it a try...a dr I know told me that the magnesium settles the nerves...calms nerve endings...hope...

Btw...challenge your neuros...don't take their word as gospel...

Welcome to NeuroTalk. This is an interesting post. Magnesium does help with muscle pain and spasms. But magnesium is essential for many other processes in the body.

Here is my magnesium information thread. It explains how to choose the right dose and type of oral supplement.

Estimates are that 70% of people in the US do not consume the RDA for magnesium. So if you start oral supplements, begin at 1/2 the RDA or about 200mg elemental.

I fin your response interesting..perplexing in fact ...magnesium is essential...topical application is what I meant...I musnt have been cleAr...mg is a mineral and when applied directly (liquid) rather than orally relief is noticeable...anyone wanting more info...my girl would be more than happy to share her research and info..

My thread has oral, and topical suggestions.

I use topical magnesium too, but find the oral works more globally as well. Topical magnesium is handy for those with issues close to the skin, where circulation is impaired as well.
If blood vessels are constricted as happens in Raynaud's syndrome or Scleroderma, the local application often is more effective, since blood flow is impaired. Those of us with Peripheral Neuropathy often soak in epsom salts with relief resulting. The autism community uses topical magnesium commonly too.

Many people do not eat the foods that are high in magnesium anymore. Also diuretics including caffeine, deplete it, as well as the diabetic metabolic state.

So, thanks for the suggestion. Where is a good place to find this liquid magnesium? What is the cost?

Mag was mentioned on tv medical show today for exhaustion. I should be taking it for steady bowel movements. I take so many supps though already!

I just wanted to "Welcome you to NT." Thanks for posting. It is really nice when a husband or wife comes on here to discuss their issues, and also what works for the MS person involved. We really appreciate you joining our forum.

I never tried topical Magnesium, but may in the future If I find the need to use it. I do understand that your wife rubs it on her hands in liquid form.

What I do use is a lot of oral Magnesium. I am used to it. I have built up to 750 mg daily to prevent my bowel plumbing's lack of motility.

More than that amount will work like a laxative for me, which I don't want (it's like Milk of Magnesia). Others have used less in order to find the right amount that works for them

Also, I just started using Olive oil for bowel health. Two teaspoons daily, in my Oatmeal, or yogurt, salad, or on a sandwich too, or anything like that. Stir it in right from the bottle (not cooked) in your juice in the morning.

Or you could use Canola oil, they both help grease the track, so to speak. They are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, the essential oils the body needs. Good for the heart too. Canola has Omega 3 and Omega 6 in it. Omega 6 could be inflammatory if too much is taken.

I swear by oral magnesium. I take 400 mg. before I go to bed. It helped with the constipation for awhile but doesn't seem to help as much anymore. Where I really notice the difference is with the tremors and twitching. As soon as I started taking it the tremors in my hands went away. My fork stopped shaking when I eat and I noticed things stopped jumping out of my hands. Also all of those annoying muscle twitches, especially in my legs disappeared. Once I ran out and it took me awhile to get to the store to get more supplements. All the twitches and tremors came back. Once I got back on it again they stopped. Now I make sure I never run out!! It's amazing stuff--I assume I had a magnesium deficiency.

I just halved my topical Mg and doubled my Taurine to 1,000 mg. Interesting reaction... quite a tranquilizer. Not quite falling over.
