Smells ?
Ok this has been bugging me and I need some opinions/experiences!
For the last week and a half every time I open my fridge I smell some thing nasty, it makes me want to vomit. My DH says he doesn't smell anything, he cleaned the fridge out on Saturday for me. He took every thing out and washed all the shelves, we thru out anything that could be bad. It was ok at first of course all I could smell was the orange cleaner but after a while it smells again. He says its all in my head . He sees me almost heaving so he knows I'm not just saying it I have that physical reaction. I can't stand to go in there for anything, last night I was in the living room and he went in the fridge and had the door open while he was looking for a snack and I could smell it and had to cover my nose for a while. He is starting to get frustrated w/me over this but I can't do anything about it! Its not like I want to smell it, trust me I don't it is so gross! UGH! Could this be a sx? I have been tired lately but I've also been sick. I feel much better now but I still smell some thing am I going :Crazy 2:? Has any one else had this type of sx? Thanks |
I have a very sensitive sense of smell, AND I get the weird smell symptom that sometimes comes with MS.
The fact that you are only smelling this when you open the fridge, leads me to believe that there is something (in/around the fridge) that has just not been found yet. Sounds like your nose is just very sensitive, like mine, and picking up on something your husband's isn't. Have you looked in the freezer? Is there some vegetable combination (cabbage, brocolli, cucumber) that might be bothering you (and not him)? When I go through a period where I get "the smells" (from MS), they happen wherever I might be in the house or yard, not just in one location. Cherie |
If you have a horrible smell in your refrigerator that you can't seem to get rid of, follow these steps to make it history. Even rotten meat has no chance. You can also ensure that you won't lose your appetite when you open the door.
[edit] Steps Remove all the items from your fridge. As you go, discard any overdue food that is developing into a science project. Place any food you choose to keep in a cooler while you work. Add ice if it will be out for some time. Clean all the shelves and drawers with soap and water. Don't forget to wipe as much of the walls and floor of the fridge as you can, even under the crisper drawers. If the smell persists, buy some freshly ground coffee. Dump 1 to 2 cups of the coffee grounds on a large plate and spread them around. Use multiple plates if the smells are extreme. Place the plate on the center shelf. Close the refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours. Dispose of the coffee grounds and replace the food. Now the hard part is keeping your husband out the fridge for 24 to 48 hrs. :D are you gonna share that book list? *grin |

Yes I will ,I will do it tonight I promise, I haven't forgotten just been overly preoccupied :sorry:. With my 1year anniversary with MS coming up and being sick I'm just very flighty lately. :Scratch-Head: Some days I don't know which way is up, if you know what I mean. But this to shall pass ;). |

I'll go thru the freezer tonight to see whats in there. It is garbage day today. At this point I'm tempted to just throw every thing away and start over, not practicle I know but I can't take much more of this. Though it is quite effective at keeping me from snacking at night ;). |
Hey Carrie! Don't give up! I can smell things that my husband and kids do not smell. I have ALWAYS been right on this issue. Do men have less sensitive noses;)?
I have found that the WORST food odor is from rotten potatoes :)! Check the drip pan under the fridge, and under your crisper drawers. The freezer also as someone else suggested. It could be around the fridge, behind it, in a cupboard next to it maybe. You gotta find it or it will drive you insane!:D I know this because I found a rotten potato way in the back of the pantry after days of searching for the odor. I have know idea how it got there:confused:! |
I can smell things, too, that most others cannot. Not sure if it's MS or just my ultra-sensitive nose.
But.....most of the men in my life have a high tolerance for handling bad smells (and producing bad smells )!! |
OK! I confess. This must be a "man" thing as I can't smell the same things that my wife can smell. Of course I smoke so I'm sure that leads to desensitization of the Olfactory nerves.
A "man" thing? Maybe. |

I smoke too, so that excuse is not gonna' fly with me. ;) If you have kids, check for a 1/2 eaten mandarin orange stuffed in the junk drawer beside the fridge. It'll get you every time. :icon_biggrin: Cherie |
